What is the most spiritually moving place you have been

For me, despite not being Catholic, it was Norte Dame in Paris and the interior of the Sagrada Familia. I especially felt I could feel God's presence in the latter. I'm just interested to hear about other places people have been spiritually moved, doesn't have to be Christian Smile

Nothing you have seen, heard, tasted, smelled or touched has ever been outside of you. It has always been perceived within. So these spiritual feelings you have experienced, no matter where you have been, have always been perceived within.

The Golden Temple at Amritsar - I'm
Catholic not Sikh but it was just amazing.
The church of the multiplication at Tabqha on the Sea of Galilee - reduced me to tears in about 10 seconds.
Close to home, the ruins of Jervaulx Abbey in North Yorkshire

Claredemoon · 24/07/2018 22:50

@noego I don't really understand your point?

Noego External places have given people spiritual feelings. The responses are "within" but the stimuli are external. Not everyone will respond in the same way to a place, but some places evoke similar feelings in many people. Are you meaning that they are not evidence of a god? Some people will agree and some will disagree. Perhaps they are evidence of a spiritual capacity in human beings?

Another one for Chalice Well.
Also St Nectan's Glen
Newgrange
Crichope Lynn
Lud's Well
The burial mound in Lyminge Forest
A large beech grove we call “the Cathedral” in Wiltshire

Vitalogy · 24/07/2018 23:18

Inside myself.

I agree noego

noego · 24/07/2018 23:20

Claredemoon. You have to go very deep to understand this. Everything you perceive can only be perceived from within.

ThinkingCat. The same reply as above. Even the stimuli of an ancient monument can only be perceived within. The feeling is where? in the monument or within yourself?

PerspicaciaTick · 24/07/2018 23:22

Do you not find that some spaces are more conducive to reflection than others?

Babdoc · 24/07/2018 23:25

Iona Abbey. I stayed overnight on the island, and went into the abbey after all the tourists had left. There was nobody there except the lady rehearsing the music for the evening service. She played “Be thou my vision” on the piano, not knowing I was there, in the utter stillness. I was moved to tears.

elQuintoConyo · 24/07/2018 23:25

I got locked in Gaudi's crypt in the Sagrada Familia, by accident obviously. 'Spiritually moving' doesn't quite cover it Grin

The top of the belltower in Girona (Spain) cathedral at 5pm on a beautifully clear December. Snow on the Pyrenees, clear air, very quiet.

Myusernameismud · 24/07/2018 23:27

Also a fully fledged atheist with a devout Christian mother who took me to a little place called Walsingham in Norfolk every year as a child. There's a Catholic shrine and a CofE shrine there, and if ever I felt anything remotely spiritual, it was there. I'd more or less forgotten about it until earlier this year when DH, who works in the construction industry, mentioned they had a contract for some renovations up there.

Now I desperately want to go back and visit, despite being as much a non believer as I was back then. I had a look at it on Google maps, and just looking at the little winding streets brought back some real nostalgia and a bizarre sense of longing I've never felt before.

Claredemoon · 24/07/2018 23:35

I love that this thread has place contributions from Atheists, Humanists, Muslims and Christians (apologies if I have missed off anyone) Smile

This thread is lovely, struggling to think of where has moved me Sad

Toddlerteaplease · 26/07/2018 13:46

Lourdes. I go every year. Definitely a thin place. (Once away from the shops) also a tiny village in Norway and the garden of the bishops palace in Wells.

Tiredperson · 26/07/2018 13:55

Glen Coe

Fluffythefish · 26/07/2018 15:35

Holy Island (Lindisfarne. NB the people who live there don't like it being called Lindisfarne. Dunno why though) especially if you are able to stay there when the tide is in

EnormousDormouse · 26/07/2018 15:41

The Pantheon. I was already overawed by how this building was constructed; then a choir started singing and the hackles on my neck stood up and I welled up.

Didiusfalco · 26/07/2018 15:48

noego I think people understand that it is a personal response.

I felt like that on a misty morning at Rievaulx Abbey. There was no one around and the mist made it feel other worldly. I love having that feeling of awe.

Vitalogy · 26/07/2018 16:20

I think people understand that it is a personal response Do they? Most people seem to believe that god is outside of them.

Maybe if the thread title was "Where were you when you had your most moving spiritual experience" Just an idea.

PerspicaciaTick · 26/07/2018 16:30

I don't believe in God at all, so am very well aware the emotional response I have in certain places is inside me.

pieceofpurplesky · 26/07/2018 16:36

The church of St Mellangell in Wales. Incredible place. If they were to ding the knights of the round table I reckon their would be there

Claredemoon · 26/07/2018 16:36

Interpret it how you like, it's a list of places, can we not turn it into an argument about the existence of God Hmm

OP posts:
speakout · 26/07/2018 16:42

I am an atheist and I find places spiritually move me.

A spiritual awareness is not something a god needs to be involved with.

23ASwanHill · 26/07/2018 16:43

St Nectan's Glen too. Very calm and peaceful.

PerspicaciaTick · 26/07/2018 16:55

Furthermore, my most spiritual experience happened in a crappy NHS labour ward, a space that contributed little to the experience.
