What is the most spiritually moving place you have been

For me, despite not being Catholic, it was Norte Dame in Paris and the interior of the Sagrada Familia. I especially felt I could feel God's presence in the latter. I'm just interested to hear about other places people have been spiritually moved, doesn't have to be Christian Smile

Chalice Well. I went there just after burying my father six months after my mother, and got such peace in the Healing Pool. Before I left Glastonbury I had the Chalice Well symbol tattooed on my upper ankle so that I'm always ankle deep in the healing water.

Coventry Cathedral knocked my socks off.

Maes Howe.

I had an incredible experience at Stonehenge. We were allowed into the stones at dawn the day after summer solstice as part of a druid ritual. While they were getting sorted out I stood with my feet bare on the grass and my eyes shut. I started to hear faint drumming and chanting. Thinking that the ritual had started, I opened my eyes only for the drumming and chanting to stop and to see everyone still getting sorted. Shut my eyes and I could hear it again. Opened my eyes and it was gone. Incredible experience.

I'm Wiccan by the way.

Uluru - Ayers Rock in Central Australia.

Headinhands: totally agree, just back from Cornwall and the light, the sea, the sky, the air, all breathtaking

Coventry Cathedral. I hadn't expected that. I loved it.

Stonehenge. Our family was firmly in the grip of a controlling "religion" and husband. But we stopped off at Stonehenge, one Sunday (vvv significant, as the rules around sabbath day activity were draconian). It was extraordinary, we were so happy and light. I have a treasured photo of 3 of my children, laughing in the sunshine.
We've escaped the religion and husband now.

Carn Euny, the ancient village in Cornwall. Sometimes when I meditate, I imagine myself sitting there in the breeze and sun.

Heligan Gardens. Visited with ex. My inner voice said " You can recover and restore yourself too". I held onto that, took several years to get to the point of opening long shut workshop doors. But hey, look! There's all my gardening tools, just where I left them years ago. Speaking metaphorically and literally here.

Sognfjord in Norway and the bishops place at wells are very 'thin' places. I also go to
Lourdes every year. Which is wonderful in a different way.

I've been logged out of here for ages but felt the urge to log back in to reply on here.

Am agnostic but oh yes, Sagrada Familia up there for me too.

Other spiritual experiences have been less predictable. Both have involved profoundly amazing, kind & extremely charismatic people who just happen to be very devout Christians. I felt that if I was going to be converted, they'd be responsible. I can't describe it, it was like being wrapped in a warm blanket every time I saw them! Alas still very much agnostic.

I’m an atheist, but there was something very wonderful about Iona. Such a feeling of ancientness, with the stone crosses and abbey.

mrsjackrussell · 16/10/2018 22:56

Bethlehem with Christmas carols being sung. It sent chills down my spine.

Thistle72 · 28/10/2018 08:40

The most spiritual place for me has been a small beach called Loch Laggan in the Highlands. It’s out of the way down a dirt track. I went first on a dark autumn afternoon, there is absolute peace and with the Loch and mountains around something very special surrounds you.

rivierliedje · 18/11/2018 17:07

St Ninians Isle in Shetland. The formation of the Ayre by the various tides, the swell of the waves, the feeling of the wind (can be very very strong!), the ruins of ancient churches and looking out over the Atlantic.

funmummy48 · 18/11/2018 19:27

The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. It was very atmospheric.

Cameron2012 · 18/11/2018 19:46

The Somme, without doubt the most quiet and moving place I have ever been

cinnamonwoman · 20/11/2018 13:26

Chapel Porth in Cornwall. A beautiful, ‘thin’ place.

Serin · 02/12/2018 23:19

St Nicholas Church, Pyrford , Surrey.

So calm and peaceful.

Also love Glastonbury, Wastwater lake in the lake district, Wells in somerset, Walsingham slipper chapel, our hospital chapel at work.

We went to Iona a few years ago and were very disappointed. Felt nothing but an oppressive almost evil presence. Made me shudder and was glad to get away. Read that there had been quite a few murders by the monks there, not sure if that's true but it didn't feel like a place that was at peace.

KringleBells · 02/12/2018 23:21

Peace Park in Guernika

housewifeoflittleitaly · 18/12/2018 01:45

Every time I stand on the beach on the north coast of Ireland in the dead of winter I feel most alive and connected to earth. It’s a beautiful natural spot & continues to make me happy and at peace each time I travel to it.

Neem · 28/12/2018 01:12

On the banks of the River Yamuna in Vrindavan, India.
And more recently, the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome

RayRayBidet · 28/12/2018 09:45

Saint Sulpice in Paris. It was only a few weeks ago but it was hauntingly lovely. I felt there was some kind of power there.

brizzledrizzle · 28/12/2018 09:48

Miles from anywhere in Iceland watching the northern lights.

PawsyMcPawFace · 24/01/2019 22:47

What’s a ‘thin’ place? Thought it was a typo but it’s been repeated

Stonehenge- thought it was just going to be a touristy place but was quite awe struck

A place in Wye valley. We were walking in the woods on a cold foggy day. We came across an old castle or similar. We walked up the steps to the top and there we could see a beautiful clear morning sky above the clouds. It was amazing

Houses if parliament - the great hall. Not spiritual as such but I just felt the sense of history embedded in the very walls.

On top of snowy mountains whilst skiing. The bit before you descent. Incredible

Blompitude · 25/01/2019 19:23

Glastonbury Abbey. I had a lovely happy feeling that everything was going to be all right, which stayed with me for a while.

Afterwards, I realised my pills for post-natal depression must have kicked in around then, so perhaps the "spiritual" feeling I had was due to that.
