Did anyone say coffee? That would be good Brew

Edd the breathiness, argh, I can't bear it! It's like, 'we're really, really, sincere and worshipping, so we have to sing in this breathy way to show how much we really really love Jesus'. Sooooo irritating! And they all do it! You get it when people talk sometimes as well: beatific smile, breathy voice 'Father God, I just want to thank you Lord that you are so awesome ....' . I shouldn't get grumpy and irritated - no doubt I have tics and mannerisms that irritate other people. But anyway it really puts me off worship songs.

Room for at least two more 'justs' Niminy in that one line prayer. Bob and I used to call it 'the earnest brigade'.

Oma Grin

BlackeyedSusan · 16/09/2017 12:47

'spose its better than "fucks" tho' oma...

Madhairday · 16/09/2017 12:50

Come on, niminy... I try not to make judgments about the choral music I'm really not into...

Grin

Might be grumpy too. But I posted that song because it means a lot to me. Breathy or not. I don't think people sing songs in that way to make a statement that they are 'truly worshipping,' but just because they love worshipping like that. Bit like taste in music in general, I guess.

:)

Madhairday · 16/09/2017 12:52

I like that one too ChristianDad.

And agree fully re the 'just just' prayers :D

Madhairday · 16/09/2017 13:01

Sorry.

Was feeling a bit vulnerable from a couple of other threads, and came here to hide, then felt a bit put down, but I do realise that's me not joining into our usual gentle ridicule. Ignore and I'll move on and stop being so silly.

It is a bit breathy

Niminy · 16/09/2017 13:01

Sorry, mhd, didn't mean to be snippy about songs that mean a lot to you. I think it's just the breathy singing that gets me, as a singer, because it's such a bad way to sing. I always feel like it's substituting sighing for other ways of expressing feeling in the way you sing. I guess I'll never really be a worship song person, though there are some that I really like.

I sometimes feel a bit tired of being told by people in my church that the church will never grow unless we sing worship songs instead of hymns, and I wish that I wasn't made to feel like an old stick in the mud for preferring to listen to choral music. But that's not to say that worship songs can't be really profound too, of course they can.

Madhairday · 16/09/2017 13:10

Don't worry. See above post. Just being a bit daft 😊

Niminy · 16/09/2017 13:10

Also, we sing some hymns that are just blinkin' useless and have tunes that nobody knows. Oh Jesus I have promised was written by a vicar in one of our parishes, and it's the hundredth anniversary of it next year, so we are going to have a big event for -- and I really loathe that hymn, it's so dreary and depressing. I expect we'll sing it loads that year

Have you been involved in that thread in AIBU? I looked at it and ducked down below the parapet in a cowardly way.

Madhairday · 16/09/2017 13:11

I'm not surprised that annoys you niminy. God can grow his church through whatever means necessary. Hymns are awesome - I think we should do them more in our church!! as long as with worhsip band Grin

Madhairday · 16/09/2017 13:14

Yeah the aibu one and the chat one today. Maybe just too much when trying to recover.

Yes at o Jesus I have promised! I heard it with a different tune though and it was much better, it made me look at the words more closely. Also I've never been able to get past 'my hope to follow duly' as I always thought it was about someone called Julie as a child 😂

Niminy · 16/09/2017 13:21

Just had a quick look at the chat thread and slunk away feeling exhausted.

Grin at Julie. Yes, the other tune's better, but I still wouldn't choose it over, oh I don't know, I will offer up my life or And can it be.

BroomstickOfLove · 16/09/2017 13:47

I quite like the version with the thumping St. Trinian's style intro. We used to sing that version at school, so I feel fondly nostalgic towards it. I have ignored the threads on chat and AIBU.

applesandpears33 · 16/09/2017 13:48

I love misheard song lyrics. A common one up here is "A wean in a manger". As the word wean means small child it makes a lot more sense than the original!

I've dipped my toe into that thread on chat to invite the OP over here. I'd not read the thread that was removed but from the circumstances it looked as though she'd get good advice and understanding on these threads.

Madhairday · 16/09/2017 14:00

Oh is that a different thread? I'm on the one about Jesus. Seems a lot lately - they do seem exhausting sometimes, going over the same ground... Confused

Love misheard lyrics. We always sang 'oh highly flavoured gravy' but I think that was in fairly common usage among kids at the time Grin

What is the St Trinian's one?

Dutchoma · 16/09/2017 14:11

I wondered for a long time about the 'dance settee'.

OP posts:
applesandpears33 · 16/09/2017 14:14

It's one in relationships about a Christian who is considering leaving her husband. Some of the posters have referred to a previous thread and domestic violence. The OP has said she has asked Mumsnet HQ to take the thread down.

applesandpears33 · 16/09/2017 14:15

I've never thought of it before as "dance settee". That'll give me a giggle next time we are singing it.

applesandpears33 · 16/09/2017 14:17

I've no idea why I said it was in chat, it is definitely in relationships. Some of the OP's comments reminded me of some of the posters on this thread and the prayer one too.

Must go and get on with the ironing and stop procrastinating...

thegreenheartofmanyroundabouts · 16/09/2017 14:46

Procrastinating away here. My choir leader has started choosing obscure hymns again. He picks stuff which was all the rage in 1860 and it may have a nice tune but when the rest of us don't know it it is painful.

I'm not a fan of praise songs because they don't always transfer well to congregational singing but there are some really good ones and I do have a mix tape in the car with belt it out ones for when I need a bit of uplift after a funeral. The breathy style is all over pop music and I have shouted at the radio before now about lack of diaphragm control and clear evidence of auto tuning. Badvicar.

BroomstickOfLove · 16/09/2017 16:37

This is the thumpy St. Trinian'sish version:

New priest is being installed next week, which is exiting.

DragonNoodleCake · 16/09/2017 20:05

What I love about worship is there is lots of different ways to do it! I love praise songs! Not a huge fan of older hymns, but that's probably because I've had bad experiences of

  1. crazy organists that don't even play the tune even when the congregation obviously don't have a clue
  2. singing the same ones so often
  3. a minister that expected choral perfection from untrained singers

Find what you like because you are likely to express it sincerely, which really is the point.

We do different praise depending on the service, the big belters are for Sunday morning and the softer or breathy ones for encounter or prayer and praise. People come to those evening services because they like that style. I do like to sing it!

My DH loves Oh Jesus I have Promised 🙄

Give me Yes and Amen, What a Beautiful Name or No longer a slave - any day!

DragonNoodleCake · 16/09/2017 20:08

Oh and I'm super excited this week as DH and I and many church friends have tickets for Spring Harvest local on Friday. We all going for dinner before it and Lou Fellingham is leading the worship (love her!)
