A place to share and chat about our funny (and not so funny experiences) in and out of church.
Did anyone say coffee? That would be good Brew

There was special cake today to say goodbye to someone who is moving away. And homemade bakewell tart. My church has a tiny congregation, but excellent food.
And it's only three weeks until we get our new priest.

applesandpears33 · 28/08/2017 18:24

Nice homemade cakes here. Yummy

Madhairday · 29/08/2017 09:08

Now I am craving cake. Hospital doesn't have cake. Danish pastries sound good right now instead of rubbery toast Grin

Niminy · 29/08/2017 10:44

Hospital food is so rubbish. Just when people need absolutely delicious and appetising meals they get sludge and pre-packaged sandwiches. When mum was in hospital (which was a lot over the last few years) we took food in because she could hardly eat anything she was given (couldn't digest loads of things) and what she could eat was so nasty. Angry

BroomstickOfLove · 29/08/2017 18:46

I have a friend who was in hospital caring for her very ill baby. She ended up spending a large part of her stay in a wheelchair after the hospital's gluten-free food wasn't.

permanentlyexhaustedpigeon · 29/08/2017 19:33

Hospital food is rubbish, I agree - DH had to smuggle in salads last time I was in as no vegetables were in sight anywhere! Keeping you in my prayers, mhd.

We get our new priest next week and everyone is very excited. He'll have his work cut out for him though - thanks to overly strict (IMHO) visiting priest and his rather strict predecessor (again IMHO), we are now down to:
5 readers
6 ministers of communion
1.5 musicians
1 bidding prayer writer
(I'm probably talking about 8 people in all )

Conversely, we have a large congregation (roughly 250ish?) who either have done stuff before and now have thrown in the towel, or don't have any interest in doing anything.

First on the agenda - "how do we get the community involved again?" DH is dissuading me from getting involved in the parish council (about 4 of the 8 people are on it) because it would be "another responsibility you won't escape from" as he accurately puts it.

Madhairday · 29/08/2017 20:45

Yes to hospital food. Even worse when you're veggie, no choice and it's all cheese sauce on stuff (overdone macaroni, overdone cauliflower and broccoli, in cheese and potato 'pie'.) Not very healthy for recovery!! I got dh to bring some fruit as even that is rare, and no salads. However someone bought me some Ferrero Rocher and that has tempted me today after not having any appetite and losing weight since I got in here. The drugs make me a bit nauseous. Have to stay another week, so just got to power through.

PEP - hope new priest settles well! Sounds like a really big church, I can't remember what denomination you said it was?

nickelbeingnormal · 30/08/2017 20:32

Welcome newbies!
Grin

I like the idea of sandwiches, but I am always very cautious about food on offer - churches and "home" catering tend not to think about vegetarians.
So I worry that the egg mayo is really prawn or tuna mayo; the cheese is really ham, etc. It's better to label properly and keep meat and veggie sandwiches separate.
Years ago I got caught out at an after service buffet a I helped myself to a cream cheese sandwich, thought "eurgh, that tastes weird" and the then-vicar's wife told me it was chicken sandwich spread. Thankfully I only had one bite, but I was not impressed. I'd not seen sandwich spread at a buffet since I was a child!!

Sundaylunchhappy · 01/09/2017 15:54

Hello, hope its not too late to join in.

Just been having read and a giggle about the stale biscuits. Currently batch baking for Sunday.... gluten free and all Grin

I love how food and hospitality can transcend past the scary religious looking membrane of church to new comers. Dh and I live rurally but are lucky to be part of a thriving Methodist church, though I hasten to add our minister is pretty non demoninational and likes to remind us frequently!

Love the idea of a bacon roll on the way in!

Madhairday · 01/09/2017 17:40

Meal tonight in hospital: shepherd's pie, corn beef hash or fish and chips. Me: I'm vegetarian. Them: there's fish Hmm

Luckily they are really nice and got something from the kitchen, but really...

Hello, sundaylunch, and welcome! Your church sounds great.

ChristianDadOnline · 01/09/2017 17:50

I seem to remember my granny saying my auntie was a vegetarian who just ate fish a long time ago!

BlackeyedSusan · 03/09/2017 21:03

Offs MHD. How ridiculous.

DD has been wearing a dust mask at her dad's as the smell and n the kitchen is making her feel sick.

Church this morning. Ds would not get out of the car, until he decided to bolt out of the opposite door and hide. Spent quite a bit of church outside.

nickelbeingnormal · 05/09/2017 21:37

Grr, mhd I bet you're glad to be home!

We're having similar issues with the hotel where the organists' dinner is. We asked the assoc secretary for the veggie menu, she's forwarded us the reply from.the hotel, and it's got fish on.it. so now xh has to be arsey and email them saying "can you confirm whether the veggie options are actually suitable for vegetarians because you've included fish which means we can't trust you know what veggie is" (but more politely. I suppose) Hmm

nickelbeingnormal · 05/09/2017 21:37

Xh?! Shock
DH!!

Madhairday · 06/09/2017 17:06

Aaaagh nickel it's so annoying isn't it, I also lose any trust for a place which includes fish as a veggie option. It's just ignorant. Angry gah! Hope dhs email has a good effect and gets them thinking.

Yes, wonderful to be home. Very tired and having a few days rest to get over the drugs!!

Niminy · 06/09/2017 22:16

So glad you're home and on the mend mhd.

While we're on the subject of food our church had a Pudding Evening the other night. Oh my days!

Having a madly busy couple of weeks, with loads of random things on my to-do list. Next is: find a DVD of Snow White so we can play a clip (dwarves singing heigh-ho, heigh-ho) in the all-age service this Saturday.

nickelbeingnormal · 07/09/2017 17:18

Yes, if they can't get a simple menu right, how can we trust allergens?

Pudding evening! Shock

Hello, newbie here! Just wanted to pop in and give everyone a wave 😊 What a lovely idea to have a little space on MN for Christian chat! DH and I moved house a year ago and because we got married recently finding a new church locally fell by the wayside a bit until the busy planning period was over. But I think I've found a nice one at last. Hoping to be accepted and get to join in with home groups etc soon. X

Sorry, no idea why that posted twice! X

harvester77 · 08/09/2017 07:52

Hi anyone ever heard of anti thesis Marcion? How does God of old testamrbr5 come to be Jesus? Thanks

Dutchoma · 08/09/2017 16:28

Welcome loobylou and harvester. I hope you find a church soon, Loobylou. Harvester I have had a look on Google for Marcion, no idea really, but we have some great theologians on here, who might help you a bit further. Or you might like to start a new tread about it and get more people interested.

Without wishing to out myself too much I would be really grateful if someone could pray for my children who have just started secondary school and are having a hard time. In particular with finding friends. I haven't got anyone else I can ask and I am already praying pretty much every waking moment myself.
Thank you from a lurker x

DragonNoodleCake · 08/09/2017 23:40

Dutchoma · 09/09/2017 06:53
