do you want a resolution of your conflict?

..i don't think the church will give you that...

..i think it is more important to be happy and content and like who you see in the mirror...and live life, doing unto others as you would have done to yourself.

morningpaper · 13/01/2007 22:09

Well kitty the bible says that LOTS of things are wrong

Most modern Christians don't take the Bible as a literal document

It is a collection of religious and spiritual texts which tell us a great deal about the people who wrote them at the time

It is more important to start from what we know about God (=a loving creator) and ask our questions in the light of that knowledge

lulumama · 13/01/2007 22:09

basically what peachyclair said!

KezzaG · 13/01/2007 22:10

DG I would debate with you but it sounds like we have similar opinions and not much would get debated!

I do think though, that if you claim to follow a religion and attend a service to worship your chosen God, then you cant just take the bits you do like and adapt those you dont.

Personally, Im with DG and think most the churchs rules are throw backs. Lots of people now agree that loads of stuff is missing/changed/adapted for political reason etc from the Bible, but I dont see how you can just choose the bits you want to adapt for yourself. How can you say Im a lesbian so Im sure God didnt really mean it, I go to church it will be fine. MP has stated what the Catholic stance is, surely that is that isnt it?

kittylette · 13/01/2007 22:11

well thats what i try to do lulumama,

ive accepted how i am,

and im with the man god meant me to be with, and ive only been with him, and we have made our sons out of love and nothing else, and we will always be together...

then someone posts im doomed to hell as i live like this

im hardly a murderer

southeastastra · 13/01/2007 22:12

why can't you pick and choose though! i'm lost on this thread now

morningpaper · 13/01/2007 22:12

KezzaG the Catholic church is more than the sum of Canon Law

There is a whole culture and worship system that people find helpful and meaningful to them

However 99% of catholics use contraception where it is available to them and this is of course forbidden

The catholic church, unfortunately, does not give too much attention or credence to its grass-roots

morningpaper · 13/01/2007 22:13

kitty according to The Catholic Church i.e. Canon Law you ARE doomed to hell

However most catholics think that's all bollocks

DumbledoresGirl · 13/01/2007 22:14

Kittylette, I really do know nothing about you. Would it offend you at all if I asked why you are not married to the man you are with, since the God and the church seem very important to you?

lulumama · 13/01/2007 22:14

if that is the case, kitty..then you have nothing to fear and you have your peace .....MP was giving the hard line catholic view..but if you are happy with your life, and you do what makes you happy and are not a bad person, so no need to worry about going to hell!

southeastastra · 13/01/2007 22:14

blimey most of the world's problem are caused by religion it just so ridiculous

DumbledoresGirl · 13/01/2007 22:16

SEA - the picking and choosing thing was explained to me thus by my priest when I converted to Catholicism:

Joining the Catholic church is like joining a club. You do not make the club rules, and when you join you are asked to abide by the rules, otherwise you be asked to leave the club.

Heaven knows what I said immediately prior to this explanation to prompt such an answer!

PeachyClair · 13/01/2007 22:16

Don't forget catholicism is at the end of the day justa group of people trying to find meaning in a (relatively new then) religion. It doesn't mean theya re automatically right, its a perspective. It amy be the onle you believe and thats fine, but it cannot over ride the words of jesus on love and tolerance, they are the biblical parts after all.

Again kittylette, read the chap I referred to- he believes (he was a Minsiter, not Catholic, in the 1800's). Part of his argument was that how oculd Angels be happy knowing perople are suffering? Instread he argues for a succession of levels through which one can gradually acquire true knowkedge of God tor each heaven. I ahve't read him all yet (went to alecture about him Friday, no chance ol) but I have to say, one lecture and I am now thinking of myself as Christian again. Quite huge really.

morningpaper · 13/01/2007 22:16

I'd love to stay but it's bedtime.

I will leave these on the table for you.

KezzaG · 13/01/2007 22:16

Well Im not catholic so dont have as much knowledge on the subject as some of you, but my thoughts on religion in general are that people seem to adapt their chosen religion to fit their lifestyle.

I had a colleague, who was 7th Day Adventist, and she followed old testament teachings and followed the sabbath on a Friday and the food laws but was incredibly wealthy, wore Gucci, drove expensive cars and didnt contribute to charity or society at all. I dont know how she reconciled these 2 aspects of her faith.

kittylette · 13/01/2007 22:16

im not married because we havent gotten round to it,

the church says we should be married,

it also says we shouldnt use contraception and i should have child after child, but thats not going to happen

what im saying is that we as catholics should adapt to the times,

people now, are nothing like the people who wrote the bible

same with homosexuality/ bisexuality, - people are much more understanding now

Lio · 13/01/2007 22:17

kitty, would it help to think about what would have happened if you'd been born in different circumstances, in a different country, for example? You might still want to believe in a god, but have a different context to that belief.

morningpaper · 13/01/2007 22:18

But Dumbledore's Girl it isn't a club, is it?!

It's just a group of people who are hopefully moving towards the truth, guided by God, philosophy and human knowledge and understanding of the world

KezzaG · 13/01/2007 22:18

Exactly my point DG, the rules are the rules. If the Pope is God representative on earth, IMO what he says goes.

southeastastra · 13/01/2007 22:19

the world would be a better place if people just stopped worshipping invisible beings

DumbledoresGirl · 13/01/2007 22:19

Totally agree with you Kittylette apart from the not having got round to getting married yet. Come on girl! get that ring on your finger! Oh and here is a for you. Don't worry about other people's opinions so much! Trust in yourself.

Lio · 13/01/2007 22:19

mp is that strawberry flavour or strawberry flavoured? Big difference.

DumbledoresGirl · 13/01/2007 22:20

Hey MP, I am only telling you what I was told by a priest - a canon no less.

morningpaper · 13/01/2007 22:20

oh dear I think it's got additives in

how EMBARASSING, I may as well have taken a FRUIT SHOOT out of my bag!

I'l take it home

'night all x
