Myinlawsdid Sad Flowers

What a horrible thing to say while you were grieving for your child.

A catholic education from nursery to A-levels is the main reason for me not believing.
I was very into church, went to Taizé etc. but spiteful, cruel nuns who called us all easy to get whores and a general sense that it was all just implausible claptrap made me the atheist I am today Smile

I like the idea of having faith and believing that everything happens according to God's super master plan, I just know it's not real.

my final straw was being told by the wife of the minister of religion that the dinosaurs were fake. I was attending religious instruction classes because I was in my early teens and I did as I was told; and some of the historical stuff was actually quite interesting.

the conversation was started by being told that the earth has only existed for a few thousand years:
me: 'but what about the dinosaurs?'
her (SCREAMING) 'the dinosaurs aren't real'
me 'ah'.

my parents let me stop attending after that. I'm not sure if I ever really believed, but am left with a detestation of ceremony, of intolerance and of those who get offended if others do not believe what they believe. And of being stuck indoors on sunny weekends.

FutureGadgetsLab · 08/05/2016 20:09

I'm not sure I ever really believed. My dad tried to raise me catholic but I never remember believing. I used to ask him questions constantly about how certain things were possible and the inconsistencies and I can remember from the age of 11 I didn't believe.

My mind is quite scientific by nature and there just isn't the evidence there to support it.

LarrytheCucumber · 09/05/2016 09:08

I do still believe but I am horrified by some of the stupid and insensitive things some Christians say. The treatment of gays is often appalling.
My DSis told me a long story about how DM had been led to a charity shop and found just the right dress at a knockdown price and I wanted to scream, because surely there are far more important things going on than DM's wardrobe. She also said 'Blessings' as she said goodbye, which made me want to vomit.
I am struggling with a major issue which I would never share with my sister or my mother for fear of their trite responses. But there are also kind and sensitive Christians who are helpful.

austenozzy · 09/05/2016 10:08

I've never believed either. My parents wanted me to take the educated decision when I was able to think for myself, If I was inclined to. I wasn't christened. I went to a school that was nominally c of e but wasn't tied to a church or anything so wasn't forced to have a 'spiritual ethos' aka brainwashing system. It's all palpably a nonsense to me.

urbanfox1337 · 09/05/2016 11:07

Buts its not gods fault that man misinterprets his message. God doesn't want any of the bad things written in this thread, its all the fault of man having free will.

And as shitty as life is, don't worry, when you die it will all have been worth it. He has a plan just wait and see, he will prove it to you in heaven.

Vaara · 09/05/2016 11:15

That's my opinion - religion was primarily a tool to control the masses. Don't worry about being cold, starved, oppressed, hungry and sick. You'll get your just reward - not now, but later, after you die and its conveniently all too late to complain.

Earthquakes are the fault of people having free will?
Whatever

urbanfox1337 · 09/05/2016 12:43

Earthquakes are the fault of people having free will?

If some ignorant woman hadn't eaten an apple then we wouldn't have earthquakes. No one forced her to do what the talking snake suggested.

Natsku · 09/05/2016 12:48

So everyone should suffer because of one woman? Fucking wonderful God that must be...

FutureGadgetsLab · 09/05/2016 12:50

If some ignorant woman hadn't eaten an apple then we wouldn't have earthquakes. No one forced her to do what the talking snake suggested.

  1. How did that cause Earthquakes?

  2. Why would God let innocents suffer because of one person?

  3. What is so wrong with wanting knowledge in the first place?

niminypiminy · 09/05/2016 12:56

This might not be what you want to hear OP, but having been brought up as an atheist and having been an atheist for most of my life I got to the point where I simply couldn't believe any more that there is no God. For much of my life I believed that there was no God, and that religion is irrational, has no evidence, is sexist and homophobic, was a tool to control the masses ... I believed all those things.

But the evidence of my own experience of God meant that I simply couldn't believe all those things any more. I was compelled to critically re-examine all my beliefs, to subject them to stringent reasoned investigation and to conclude that they were all ... wrong.

Dorrit that's my view on the origin story, the whole thing was made up to oppress women and discourage free thinking.

Shakey15000 · 09/05/2016 13:02

Logic and science.

Red I have sleep paralysis. Not been on a FB group though. Suspect I would get kicked out too Smile

urbanfox1337 · 09/05/2016 13:15

god created a paradise, there was no earthquakes in Eden. Eve decided to listen to a snake rather than obey the holy spirit and so had to leave paradise for an imperfect world that had earthquakes.

Suffering is a necessary test for everyone to prove their faith, didnt you see my previous post, "when you die it will all have been worth it. He has a plan just wait and see, he will prove it to you in heaven."

Knowledge is a double edged sword, it takes you further from god's word. Just look at what is happening in the world.

When you study the true god and put your faith in him he will show himself to you. Obviously those who just dismiss him don't know what its really all about because they don't believe.

Bananalanacake · 09/05/2016 13:23

If God is so great why does he ignore his workers abusing children?

I had to laugh when last week I saw a thread in active about philosophy and religion and the number of comments was 666

pearlylum · 09/05/2016 13:30

I didn't print out the emails because I don't want my sister to feel that this is an acceptable way to communicate.
I had asked and our mother had asked for her to use post. She continued to send the emails.
So I started to ignore them. When she then asked my mother whether she had read the emails my mother told her no.

So in the end the emails stopped.
I don't want to have to be an interface for contact between my sister and our mother.
Part of caring for my mother is supporting her autonomy and privacy.
I don't want her to be reliant on me to set up a skype link or open and print out her private correspondence.
My mother enjoys paper letters through the post and she writes back too. Going to the post office to post a letter gives her some structure and focus to her day.
This is her world.

Natsku · 09/05/2016 13:39

Only a really malevolent being would cause people to suffer to test their faith - hardly a God worth worshipping really.

urbanfox1337 · 09/05/2016 13:42

Bananalanacake , god does not ignore his workers, they are judged the same as everyone else.

Natsku, the suffering is nothing compared to the rewards when you ascend to heaven. god doesn't cause any of the suffering it is man that causes it.
