How do you resolve conflicting religious parenting

My husband doesn't want our children to be allowed access to both of our (differing) religious views, only his.

He is atheistic and I wanted to introduce our preschooler to Sunday school if he wanted to try it.

He loves preschool and wanted to see what this was all about too, and I had always been open about the fact I intended to encourage exploring God as an alternative to atheism, without forcing anything.

Obviously his Dad's alternative viewpoint is also and equally well known in our household. However I don't silence my husband the way I feel he is trying to silence me and I'm trying to remain balanced and fair.

This morning he was saying how he didn't want our son to attend Sunday school as he doesn't like it; which led to our son saying he didn't want to go anymore. So this morning we went to the park instead Hmm

Has anyone experienced this parental conflict before and how did you deal with it? There must be some balanced compromise that we can reach, while still enabling our children freedom to make their own choices.

Contemplates I would agree that free will is a bit of an illusion and that we are essentially the product of our experiences, our DNA with possibly a little bit of chance thrown in. Surely though that view negates the free will that is such a central part of religion?

The practices you describe are about tricking people into doing what you want and again seem to be something that religion would reject.

I'm not saying that God couldn't put ideas into people's heads (if he existed). Simply that to do so would be wrong by his own rules.

As for Professor Dawkins remark. I'm sure that is how it is, but why would you expect the universe to have morals? Does your vacuum cleaner? Should hydrogen lie awake at night worrying if it morally ok to combine with oxygen?

Even if god existed the universe itself would still be made of atoms and energy and would not have morality built in.

I'm sure the scene where Britt performs the song in the film is scarier and creepier though, I remember the rappings (on the wall) being much louder....

Have to dig out the DVD..

back I'm not saying I think that myself, an just saying that even scientists and workplace psychologists don't bat an eye at the notion that people are led towards acting a certain way; whether they are aware of that or chose to comply is an entirely different matter. Insert freedom of choice.

Also not saying the work ethics are biblical either Wink as I suppose you could say it is being sneaky. Did you notice I was clear to say I wasn't actually saying I have done this myself? Smile

Oh I noticed that last bit, Contemplates :)

Capsium, yes it was a powerful/creepy scene. I may have to watch it again too now you've reminded me.
