Has anyone tried Reiki? Could you tell me a little bit about it?

OP posts:
24HourPARDyPerson · 14/06/2012 15:39

That was pretty much addressed on the first page, seeker.

-Reiki seemed to work for me
-It hasn't been proven to work, scientifically, shown here, here and here.
-Well science hasn't all the answers. It worked for me personally, by a mechanism that I don't understand as an individual or that nobody understands yet. So I'll continue.
-Woo bollox, spaghetti monster, anti enlightenment, more buzzwords, don't you understand logic dear.

seeker · 14/06/2012 15:52

So even though it reiki was invented in the 1920s, and the whole reiki master business is a pyramid selling scam and iit has been prove to have no impact in properly conducted double blind trials, you are still prepared to say "well, it works for me" ?

24HourPARDyPerson · 14/06/2012 16:13

yes of course.
how is it negated?

some people just respond to ritual.

comfortmewithapples · 14/06/2012 16:14

Good to see some polite and reasonable discourse on this thread at last. Love your name, Pardyperson. Do you embody it?

LeBFG · 14/06/2012 16:21

Comfort - if you are really offended and you think a poster's not keeping within the rules, then the simple thing is to just report them.

24HourPARDyPerson · 14/06/2012 16:23

Blush not really Comfort am having a snippy few days. Must try harder!

comfortmewithapples · 14/06/2012 16:40

Have a massage! Or any complementary treatment really.....cranial osteopathy, perhaps, or acupuncture...it will certainly make you feel less snippy. Grin And more generous towards the rest of the world.

Not sure if anything can cure narcissistic fantasies about being the cleverest person in the world, though.

comfortmewithapples · 14/06/2012 16:50

Shit, now this thread has got me making snidey comments re narcissistic fantasies about being the cleverest person in the world...evil spreads cunningly, doesn't it? Better get my chakras cleaned.

seeker · 14/06/2012 17:01

Of course some people respond to ritual. And massage can be relaxing. And lying quietly in a calm environment can make you feel a lot better.

But you are not being healed. The Reiki person is not doing anything except providing the relaxing environment. And it is a lie to claim differently.

comfortmewithapples · 14/06/2012 17:05

Proper discussion at last! Hooray! My chakras (not that I know what they are) feel better already.

seeker · 14/06/2012 17:06

Proper discussion- as in sod the evidence, I know what I know?

comfortmewithapples · 14/06/2012 17:15

What do you make of the studies Dollydowser linked to, seeker?

LeBFG · 14/06/2012 17:21

Comfort - can you hear me!

You can complain properly about the rudeness, or not mention them again in this debate.

You can also look on the Randi website for information about whether reiki works.

You've replied to neither of these comments. I may have to take that personally Grin

comfortmewithapples · 14/06/2012 17:23

Okeydokey, I don't mind if you take it personally. Grin

comfortmewithapples · 14/06/2012 17:25

If reiki really were just pyramid selling, would prestigious places like Breast Cancer Haven be providing it to cancer patients?

Here. HRH Prince Charles is patron. Grin No, but seriously.

comfortmewithapples · 14/06/2012 17:26

And I will sit down properly, LeBFG. On the carpet. With my hands in my lap.

LeBFG · 14/06/2012 17:43

As comfort will be the only one left standing because everyone else has got bored of him/her not bothering to respond to questions in this so-called debate at the same time as posting things about posters being rude etc.

I'm off to do something more interesting. Enjoy the carpet comfort.

Signed: bored.

comfortmewithapples · 14/06/2012 17:55

OK, teach. Grin

seeker · 14/06/2012 18:11

I don' have pubMed access. But the abstracts of DollyDowser's studies basically say that some cancer patients use CAM, and some of them find relief and comfort from it.

Ditto the Breast Cancer Haven. All sorts of therapies that make people feel better are offered. The BIG difference is that they don't say it cures anything. Nobody is denying that massage, calm environments, peace, time, attention and kindness makes people feel better. What is wrong and a lie is to say thqt is some sort of unexplained process going on, and that healing happens.

comfortmewithapples · 14/06/2012 18:13

Breast Cancer Haven does repeatedly refer to reiki healing.

comfortmewithapples · 14/06/2012 18:15

And the conclusion of the second study DollyDowser linked to says this:

CONCLUSION:

There is growing evidence that energy therapies have a positive effect on symptoms associated with cancer. While there is need for further research, it is clear that an appreciation for the value of research methods beyond the randomized control trial is important.

seeker · 14/06/2012 18:25

Who produced that study? Who funded it?

What growing evidence? Who says?

GhostOfAWasp · 14/06/2012 18:35

How come no one asked those questions upthread when reports rubbishing reiki were posted? One law for the Woo and another for the Anti Woo? Wink

seeker · 14/06/2012 18:37

Maybe the Reiki defenders didn't think to ask? It's the first thing you should ask when somebody offers you a study supporting something!
