Has anyone tried Reiki? Could you tell me a little bit about it?

OP posts:
comfortmewithapples · 13/06/2012 16:29

You can take pills for horrible thoughts, entropygirl. Grin

comfortmewithapples · 13/06/2012 16:32

If you suffer from them regularly.

entropygirl · 13/06/2012 16:32

how did you know?!?!?

I would totally donate my left leg after death to the cause of establishing whether or not a Reiki master can tell the difference between a living and dead person.

24HourPARDyPerson · 13/06/2012 16:33

Cote & Entropy

You are being rude and patronising.

Right, almost definitely, I am not arguing with what you say - but rude and patronising certainly.

It's absurd to argue with peoples' own lived perceptions of how their own psycholgies respond to different forms of ritual and attentions paid.

Take that how you will.

Now back to read the rest of the thread.

entropygirl · 13/06/2012 16:34

Right well I am off now essentially for good.

Nothing to do with this thread....just a general decision to get more fecking work done etc.

It's been erm...strange.

Best wishes to all

entropygirl · 13/06/2012 16:36

yeah but thats just your belief/opinion and frankly I think you have aired it in a rude and patronising way.

I demand you respect my belief that I am not at all rude and in fact go outdoors a lot!

LeBFG · 13/06/2012 16:48

My particular favorite

Woo-weeing!! Who'd a thought? Unfortunately, after 15 minutes Ms Hunter was unable to make the participant pee. Damn... on the upside, 1 million dollars still for grabs though!

CoteDAzur · 14/06/2012 11:46

LOL at entropy's Thanks Thanks Thanks post
Triple-LOL at comfort thinking that's such an improvement Grin

CoteDAzur · 14/06/2012 11:49

^Ms. Hunter will have fifteen minutes to paranormally cause Jeff Wagg to urinate himself. There will be no diapers involved. Mr. Wagg will empty his bladder beforehand, as per Ms. Hunter's instructions.

Ms. Hunter has failed the preliminary Challenge Test.^

I'm shocked. SHOCKED, I tell you. I had so believed in her Grin

comfortmewithapples · 14/06/2012 13:37

Do you disagree that entropy's Thanks posting style is a vast improvement on her former appallingly discourteous posting style?

Do you think it's helpful to post rudely and abusively on MN?

Do you think MN Talk Guidelines are wrong, and should be disregarded?

comfortmewithapples · 14/06/2012 13:46

I think if entropygirl has acquired some self-awareness and learnt how to post courteously on MN from this thread, then she will have gained a lot from it.

seeker · 14/06/2012 13:52

I think if entropygirl has opened one poster's eyes to critical thinking, and shown one poster that much bullshit is clothed in pseudoscientific flannel, then she has done good job.

comfortmewithapples · 14/06/2012 13:54

Is it appropriate to do that via rudeness?

Is that an effective way to discuss something?

comfortmewithapples · 14/06/2012 13:55

Is that what Critical Thinking students are taught at your school?

It's certainly not what is taught at my ds' school.

They are taught that bullying is wrong.

comfortmewithapples · 14/06/2012 13:56

And they are taught that intelligent children can make their points better by reasoned arguments than by bullying the "enemy" into submission.

seeker · 14/06/2012 14:01

Well, if I had seen any rudeness or bullying then i would agree. What I actually saw was people not addressing the key issues and avoiding doing so by accusing the most well informed and cogent arguer in favour of science of rudeness and bullying. A common technique. Deflects the spotlight of reason very well sometimes.

comfortmewithapples · 14/06/2012 14:03

It really shocks me that teachers can see bullying behaviour as acceptable.

seeker · 14/06/2012 14:04

See? Avoiding the point again. I'm not a teacher, by the way. Show me bullying.

comfortmewithapples · 14/06/2012 14:06

Well, at least that's a relief.

24HourPARDyPerson · 14/06/2012 14:21

read up above seeker.

tone matters.

comfortmewithapples · 14/06/2012 14:25

Well, I was going to say "Ask the others on this thread."

You, CoteDAzur and Entropygirl don't think any of you post rudely - because you all post in the same way.

seeker · 14/06/2012 14:25

As I said. Good way to deflect the spotlight of reason.

24HourPARDyPerson · 14/06/2012 14:50

Bullshit seeker as you know.

We are not addressing trhe substance of your posts - I said above I agree with you, and am adding now that I admire the knowledge shown - but the style is what's off.

FWIW I don't think it's neccessary to respect people's beliefs or the fact that they've an opinion.
But I do think it's Nicer and Ultimately More Productive to respect the person themselves and not position yourself as superior in general because of your own opinions.

seeker · 14/06/2012 15:06

But have you seen how we have moved away from the point where it was shown that reiki doesn't actually have any effect beyond the placebo? And that studies have repeatedly shown that it doesn't?

And all because the focus is now on the posting style of someone who became increasingly exasperated by the reiki supporters to address the points she was making.

worldgonecrazy · 14/06/2012 15:23

Re-reading this thread, can I suggest that the anti-reiki lot are just a little bit forthright and robust in their posting style, rather than outright rude?

Anyway, I spotted this query by Cote which hasn't had an answer yet:

Why threefold and not twofold or fourfold? I'm curious.

Because three really is a magic number. For some reason the human brain loves the number three. Sorry, I can't find any links right now but there have been studies carried out which demonstrate that humans will be drawn to the number 3, which is why it's used quite a lot as a marketing ploy - we will be drawn to a "3 for 2" offer above a "2 for 1" even though the latter is a better bargain. It's also something that speechwriters use to provide emphasis, e.g. "Education, Education, Education", "Vidi, vici, veni" Wink and so on.

Anyway, this love of the number "three" led to the development of something being returned threefold during some neo-pagan rituals, and eventually to the development in 1960s/1970s Wicca of something called "the threefold rule", whereby what you give out, good or bad, is returned to you threefold. Quite obviously this doesn't bear out mathematically or in reality, but does provide a very basic ethical framework to live by, i.e. "think about how you behave and treat people and act as if everything you do will be returned to you threefold". Wicca has been a strong influence on most neo-pagan paths and so this tenet has become popularised by those who are interested in neo-pagan spirituality.

I hope that answers the question.
