Safe haven chat thread for believers

Starwisher · 04/04/2012 23:45

I thought it be lovely to start a" safe haven"thread for all the believers on mumsnet. It doesn't matter what religion or spirituality you are, the important thing is a belief in God or higher power that unites us.

The idea is too talk with other believers to share ideas, thoughts and feelings or even general musings.
So come in and relax!

please can I respectfully ask that this is not a debating thread to challenge people. While I am not the mn police, there are other threads to debate on or please start your own. This is a safe haven

Morning all! This thread moves so quickly!
I will be quick, and then back later, I have to run out and get some new garden furniture.
The fate of non Christians has always bothered me. The idea of God rejecting decent people who never had the chance to follow Jesus bothered me. I really can't escape the 'different paths up the same hill' feeling. I have talked to my vicars about this too, quite a lot, as it was quite a large barrier to my faith, and even though it goes against what is taught I really believe that because God is a good God, that all who believe and trust in God will be alright with him, regardless of the rituals they follow to express this (Muslim, Jew, Pagan, Christian). I believe everyone is praising the same God.
I think if you willingly reject God you might be in a bit of trouble. And hell is merely the seperation from God, just eternal nothingness. I love the idea that somebody upthread expressed - hell as a sort of rehab centre Grin I would love it if that were how it really is!
These are just my ideas, that I am still thinking about,
Jesus in India sounds really interesting - I will look at that tonight!

Hi all. Hidden thanks for your quote, I am the way, the truth and the life. Interestingly I remember reading a while ago an article that suggested Jesus may have been a narcissist!! Although I don't believe that a narcissist would allow himself to be crucified and not to try to save his own skin!

Chip, an interesting point you make.

This morning I found a very interesting website which answered most of my questions. www.y-jesus.com. I find logical, reasoned arguments so helpful. I think it's what I need at the moment.

Hope everyone is having a good day x

I have been quiet on this thread but enjoying reading everyday.
I feel I have learnt so much :)
Can anyone recommend a bible to get. It needs to have normal sized words, not small sized and new or old testament :)
I decided against going to church at Easter as wasn't ready but am determined that I will go Sunday this week. I also want to sign up for the Alpha class which starts in September. :) I am going to phone today :)

I have this bible -

www.amazon.co.uk/NLT-Life-Application-Study-Bible/dp/0842384936/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1334248650&sr=1-3

  • it is HUGE!! I like it though as the language is easy to understand and it has lots of additional explanations / history / background in it.
teertornado · 12/04/2012 18:00

Hello all. I've been following this thread for a few days and I think it's a lovely place to spend time. I can see myself being more of a wallflower standing back and watching with interest but I thought seeing as though I've been eavesdropping on your conversations it would be rude not to say something.

hiddenhome · 12/04/2012 18:11

I like the New International Version. I find the Good News Bible, isn't such a good translation. NIV is pretty reliable.

Codandchops · 12/04/2012 18:14

I like the NIV too. I also have the Catholic Bible too but find the NIV a far easier read.

MonsterBookOfTysons · 12/04/2012 18:20

Thank you for the suggestions, I have had a google and like the look of the NIV.
Do Waterstones sell them, I never noticed Bible's the other week when I went in? Confused
I would like to compare before buying IYKWIM :)
Hi Teartornado :)

chipmonkey · 12/04/2012 18:22

Hey teertornado! Join in whenever you like, don't be shy!

Ladies, I heard a clip of Thich Nhat Hanh, a Zen Buddhist Monk, speaking on the radio this morning. He had such a lovely hypnotic voice and I felt so utterly calm listening to him. Mostly he was talking about just living in the here and in the now and being mindful of our breathing and feeling just happy to be alive and enjoying life. He runs retreats in the South of France too. I would love to go on one.

hiddenhome · 12/04/2012 18:25

I have a Catholic Bible too, but, must admit, I haven't taken a look at it yet Blush The thought of starting to read/study something that's even longer than the standard Bible isn't something that I would look forward to! Grin

Everywhere sells the NIV Monster It's probably the most popular one after the KJV.

Codandchops · 12/04/2012 18:27

I really like the Bible you linked to Blob, looks a really good version for study.

MonsterBookOfTysons · 12/04/2012 18:36

Ok cool, I will go tomorrow then :o

Sorry I mis spelt your name Teer Blush

blobtobetter · 12/04/2012 18:40

I like it a lot! It isn't exactly handy to carry about though - a bit like a brick!

It has maps and little profiles of different people in the bible. Hundreds of little notes expanding on verses too.

MonsterBookOfTysons · 12/04/2012 18:40

I just had a look on Amazon and downloaded the NIV Bible for free onto my kindle. I would like an actual book though but can get that when I am sure I like this version :o

MonsterBookOfTysons · 12/04/2012 18:43

Oh its is just the standard english version Hmm Ignore me, I am still off to waterstones then :o

tummytickler · 12/04/2012 19:19

Blob I have that bible too - it's brilliant - but it lives under my bed as it is massive! I have a smaller one for home group and KJV on my Kindle for being out and about.
I have home group tonight - but I am poorly prepared. I have quickly read the bible verses, but haven't listened to the sermon. It is the Easter holidays after all, and just couldn't find the time. Hopefully I will be able to contribute something!
How has everyones day been?

MonsterBookOfTysons · 12/04/2012 19:29

Quiet here, bit lonely tbh Blush
I am feeling better and have started my exercising again which I am happy about.
How has your day been tummy? :)

blobtobetter · 12/04/2012 20:14

tummytickler I haven't heard of home groups. Is it like a church book study?

It is a huge bible! I have a little bible which I have been underlining (writing in a book!!) some verses I like.

hiddenhome · 12/04/2012 20:19

I have injured my arm cleaning the fish out (don't ask) Sad We have been to Ikea for our tea and I bought the dcs a new duvet set each.

Hope you are all well and Smile

MonsterBookOfTysons · 13/04/2012 12:08

Afternoon :)

chipmonkey · 13/04/2012 12:13

Afternoon, Monster!

MonsterBookOfTysons · 13/04/2012 12:14

Hi chip, had gone very quiet in here :o
