Graham, Gloria and Gossip! Religion Chat thread (part 4)

I know we've not officially finished the last one, but I wanted to get the link in before we ran out of room!

Everyone welcome - the aim of this thread is to generally chat about church life, or just gossip in general!
You don't have to be a regular church-goer, nor do you have to know what we're going on about!
It's not about debate, it's just about chatting
:)

I commissioned a friend of mine to make me a Chorister doll, and it arrived yesterday. It's blimmin' fabulous.

Thats really sweet, nickel. A lady at church made a priest and a reader for the "splat the rat", but they mysteriously went missing. The reader looked suspiciously like me, and I was a bit Hmm at DH spending so much time on the game at the Christmas fayre!

Not heard of Rev Shock? Funniest program ever!

(Nigel, the one played by Miles Jupp, with the beard, is a Reader in the church. Scarily close to the truth!)

nickelbabe · 29/10/2011 11:25

Grin at the splat the rat.

Grin that was funny. I couldn't answer any of those questions Grin

sob sob
he says "the more God loves you, the better your sound system is"
[sob sob]
ours is rubbish, so that must mean God doesn't love us at all :( :( :(

MaryBS · 29/10/2011 19:56

Keep your cassock on, he was only joking, nickel :o

Ours is rubbish too. There are more important things than sound systems (but don't tell any sound engineers that!)

DutchOma · 29/10/2011 20:16

I saw one programme of Rev and didn't think it was funny at all. Certainly won't be watching again, sorry.

MindtheGappp · 29/10/2011 23:13

I didn't find Rev funny either.

MaryBS · 30/10/2011 12:29

Well for various reasons, it won't appeal to everyone, but as a caricature of life in the C of E, its pretty realistic if slightly exaggerated (which is why its funny), and its well known they used a lot of priests (see the credits at the end)) for consultation, and many real life stories.

nickelbabe · 31/10/2011 10:51

I thought the clips were funny, but I probably wouldn't want to watch a whole programme. :)

sound system is getting even worse.
I am convinced it was from when a school did a harvest thing a couple of weeks ago, because it was "fine don't anyone dare touch or fiddle with it!" before then.

The "homework during the sermon" thing worked out very well on Sunday - I didn't make it too long or complicated (or challenging in any way, in fact!) - basically a bit of reading comprehension based on the anthem and Bach. They both did well - I told them they should discuss it, so their answers were both the same, which is good. So they get a full Good Mark for that.
And original Junior chorister even seemed to like having the homework set during the sermon! Shock

Hi everyone, well for once we don't have visitors, and yesterday we had the official opening of the youth and community centre that we've been building (well not literally me as I don't really like getting my hands dirtyGrin). We had loads of people come and some VIPs so everyone was happy. Last night we had a proper meal and a decent nights sleep for the first time in a while! Now just need to get the programmes up and running to make use of the facility...

Hope you're all ok - I do check in and read stuff even if I'm not posting so keeping up to date with you all!

madhairday · 31/10/2011 15:31

milly that's great - you must be so excited about it all :)

Had a weekend away at sils, was good to get away.

We are big Rev fans here, think it is having grown up in the c of e and now married to it as well Grin there is just so much that is spot on in that programme and also some really profound lovely stuff. nickel I reckon you'd like it, you ought to get the first series, there's a great one where the local evangelical church invade and have a smoothie cafe etc, it is so caricatured but v v amusing. You have to be able to laugh at yourself really and not take it too seriously. I can't wait! :)

MaryBS · 31/10/2011 19:01

That reminds me, talking of the smoothie bar, DD had to do a model of a church for RE, based on what she'd build if she were on a desert island. I suggested a smoothie bar, and she's put one in. I wonder if her RE teacher will 'get' it :o

poshme · 31/10/2011 20:45

hello
nickel it worked - I was reading the vicar thread and thought I'd come over here to see what the chat was about - have now read all this thread and not done any ironing...
I'm a long time lurker on MN - dont post often but do like hearing about other people's churches - makes me realise that I am lucky with ours in so many ways. CofE, good mix of old and new music,(we do occasonally sing GK I'm afraid!) great clergy, feel like I belong and its my family... but there are times when I think that I want to go to a big church where I won't be in charge of all the kids groups/ youth stuff & where my kids will get the chance to meet lots of other Christians their own age, not just 1 or 2.
Am also on the PCC and there are days where I want to shout say very loudly "yes I know I don't have a paid job but having 3 kids under 5 keeps me quite busy so no I can't go to meetings at 10am, 4.15pm, on saturdays etc etc"
and breathe.
Sorry, meant to just come on and say hi, and its a bit of a rant. Cant really complain to anyone else - DH also does lots of voluntary stuff and does a "paid job" so thinks I should calm down and most local friends think I'm mad to go to church. :(

nickelbabe · 01/11/2011 10:53

Hello poshme and welcome to the thread :)

don't worry about ranting - we do that very well on here.
I know what you mean about feeling obliged to help with everything - we're now a small church, and sometimes it feels like there's more to be done than time to do it!
and, yes, these days it seems to be normal not to go to church, and those of us who do are oddballs. :(

the best thing about this thread, i think, is the perspective from everyone else - it really makes me feel like part of a bigger picture :)

madhairday · 01/11/2011 12:27

Hi poshme - welcome and feel free to rant away - as nickel says we like doing that here - it helps!

You sound v busy with little ones and various roles in church - hope you get some time for you sometimes? (I know, impossible at times, my dc are now 11 and 8 but it still gets incredibly busy)

Took the dc to a light party last night - it was manic and chaos and noisy but they enjoyed themselves which is the main thing. I just find that kind of thing harder and harder now...esp if nowhere to sit down. I'm turing into a party pooper I feel....but I get so exhausted.

nickelbabe · 01/11/2011 12:35

oh, yes, I forgot to talk about The Alternative!
It was great fun- I went along for about an hour and ½.

They had a huge bouncy castle type slide, and I had two goes on it!
and they had air ice hockey, and giant connect 4, painting masks and windchimes and food. (no food for me, though, cos it was hot dogs)
I was rather knackered when I left, and boiling, but I think I got some good photos for the magazine.
I've also bought online a colour laser printer, for the purposes mainly of printing the colour parts of the magazine. I got annoyed by the cost of colour photcopying - it's £1 per copy at most places, or just under, and that's ridiculous when I need the equivalent of 4 x 100 copies!
The printer cost £73, and it comes with cartridges that "should" print up to 700 colour copies. (i'm guessing it won't be that many if they're quite heavy in colour - but even buying cartridges for it isn't as expensive as buying printing elsewhere!)

madhairday · 02/11/2011 16:02

Party sounded good nickel, can't believe you were on a bouncy castle at 36 wks prg Grin what are you like??

Have been wondering how lostafrica is doing now - hope you're OK.

I'm finally starting to feel a little better and suddenly have that tinge of energy I need, trouble is I then start to do everything all at once and do too much. Need to slow down...

nickelbabe · 02/11/2011 16:15

It wasn't a bouncy castle, it was a giant inflatable slide Grin

And I've been very restrained since Grin

I skived the PCC meeting last night because after tea, I just wanted to sleep.
I texted one of the members, whose was the only mobile number I've got (i only made my mind up at ¼ to 8), but she didn't reply, so I don't know if she got he message in time...

Working on our next Celebration Eucharist. We're doing the story of the Prodigal son in drama during the whole service. I would like to incorporate the Eucharistic prayer with the celebration of the return of the son... has anyone got any modern eucharistic prayer? ( which still includes all the necessary bits?)

nickelbabe · 03/11/2011 13:37

D o you mean a copy of the ones from CW?
Or new ones?

OP posts:
madhairday · 03/11/2011 13:41

I'll ask dh, Blue....

How are you btw, we'll have to sort another date.

nickel, arf at inflatable slide, that's OK then Grin

Hate this weather. elephant on chest today. Trying to get an admin afternoon in.

Bluetinkerbell · 03/11/2011 13:45

I mean new ones Wink we normally use Prayer H from CW, but I would like something less formal IYSWIM

I'm ok-ish today... It's Sterre's due date today. I feel oddly calm and peaceful but hurting and teary at the same time.

Definitely need to sort another date mhd! We're going to Lichfield Cathedral this Saturday! Looking forward to it! (I'll probably raid their book store after our guided tour Grin)

nickelbabe · 03/11/2011 13:47

:( that you're not feeling well again.
