I wanted to put some random thoughts and stuff regarding church, without it having to be a debate or a specific topic (and not prayers, either)

It's basically, a "what happened at church (or in my musical/spiritual life) this week" thread. Grin
Please join me!

I'll start:

We had Midnight Mass (on Christmas Eve, would you believe!), and it was half past 11, everyone was sitting and ready for the service to start - I waved the organist to give me my notes: he was just about to plat them when:
" TAXI FOR suchandsuch " came blaring out of our speaker system. Angry
There's a Wetherspoon's over the road and looks like the DJ's mike was on the same frequency as our radio mikes.
So, all the congregation started giggling and we had to wait 5 minutes until everyone was calm and collected enough to carry on.

lol @ Mary Magdalene.

I just can't imagine God saying "right I'm going to send my Son down there, and he'll be just like any other human apart from that fact he's my Son. So he can be joyful, angry, be tempted, sad, happy etc etc.........but I' not going to let the natural human hormones work and let him ever think that a girl is good looking"

nickelbabe · 17/02/2011 13:12

exactly!
wasn't the whole point that he had to be tempted but to resist temptation?
i can't belive either that it was just that period in the desert.
and we know nothing about his teenage years - i bet they skimmed over that bit because he was a right rebel!

madhairday · 17/02/2011 13:49

Hello.

Baroque I just pmsl at your interesting name change up there Grin

Hello Lyra, welcome to the thread, I like this thread because it's pretty random and supportive too :)

Bit better today. Just had my mums seeker group round, we did the Holy Spirit. Was good, hard to teach on that subject but good discussion.

I'm sure as well that Jesus must have got those kinds of feelings, there's that passage that says he was tempted as we were yet without sin, so the temptations must have always been there. After all he was fully human and that's why what he did was so powerful - got into the mess in the midst of us. :)

nickelbabe · 17/02/2011 14:21

oh, i'm fascinated by the Holy Spirit! it's something that the modern church talks about endlessly (this is not a bad thing!), but growing up traditional, we never discussed it - it jsut existed . it's been really enlightening learning about it all as an adult.

There was a bishop many centuries ago (can't remember a date!) who said that Jesus, being without sin, was the ultmiate trick for the devil. It was along the lines of: when a human dies, the devil takes all the sin that they have and becoems stronger and that's how he controls temptation.
when Jesus was kille,d he entered him, but because there was no sin in there he was defeated instantly. and that's why he's got no power over us now.

I've got my new Power Director installed!
Grin

The computer man took my computer away, probably swore a lot because the thing refused to do as it was told, installed my HUGE harddrive, and brought it back. in the meantime, he also rescued a shedload of wedding photos that had been "overwritten" on my flashdrive.
he's going to have to put a DVD RW drive in too, because mine only reads (i have discovered) but that's okay, it'll only cost about £16, and it's not urgent because i have 1 terabyte of memory!!!
GrinGrin

I am scared of power director because it looks very scary.

madhairday · 17/02/2011 14:31

Oooh it's brilliant nickel, I'm sure the newest version is even better, have fun :)

Yes that's what some of my group were saying re HS - a couple of them went to a church school and were in the choir and so forth growing up but had never learned about the HS, they were fascinated, it was a good session, very positive :)

nickelbabe · 17/02/2011 14:45

thanks!

Baroque - can i save a prject partway through and then return to it later and carry on?

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 17/02/2011 15:27

yes Nickel you can save a project and return to it later Smile

I fell asleep earlier - woke up at 2.10 - too late to go to the "church" part of toddlers, so had a fag woke up and then went over for coffee and chat.

MadHair - yes, the name was interesting - I meant to change it before I slept last night but forgot LOL

nickelbabe · 17/02/2011 16:08

at least you didn't miss the coffee and chat! Grin

and thanks, i have now saved my project (so far!)

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 17/02/2011 16:13

no I didn't - and apparently BF said to other friend (the one who ran us up to A&E the other day - doesn't work at the school on Thursday afternoons - so runs Toddlers instead) "I hope she's sleeping".......so yes - was a good thing that

A) I slept (if only for an hour)
B) I didn't miss the coffee

Right am off to iron and DS1 is going on Iamlearning

nickelbabe · 17/02/2011 16:18

there are lots of people talking about ironing this week.
i must find otu what it is.
if you're talking about it on here, it can't be rude. Confused
i hope i'm not missing out on something good!
Grin

lyra41 · 17/02/2011 16:43

I never iron unless:

  1. a wedding
  2. a job interview
  3. a funeral
  4. a christening

but I do teach my children to iron, in case they want to be smarter than me.

nickelbabe · 17/02/2011 17:36

i used to iron everything that was creased.

then i started wearing clothes that don't crease so easily.
now i very rarely iron (surplice gets ironed, and every now and then clothes will be ironed... I seem to be able to get away with more creases than i used to! )

PositiveAttitude · 17/02/2011 19:27

Evening ladies,

Baroque, I was a bit Shock then Grin at your namechange!!

Day off today, which was good, only 12 work emails needing urgent attention, and 5 phone calls so far!! How is it that if the minister says he is having a day off, I have to sheild all his calls, if I have a day off, everything becomes urgent and "its ok, PA wont mind!" Hmm Sorry, another moan from me!!

Off to home group later, we are doing a Philip Yancey Prayer course thing. We just end up laughing at his "acting" skills on the DVD (or rather lack of)I must try harder to be a little more reverential (is that the right word??) about these things!!

Ironing? whats that? tumble drier and a quick shake is the closest I get here, apart from DHs work shirts which I begrudgingly iron sometimes, if the shake doesnt work well enough!

lyra41 · 17/02/2011 20:10

nickel

surplice!? Are you a woman of the cloth then?

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 17/02/2011 20:19

oh dear - all I can say about the name change is........

I'm glad we've nearly filled the thread Grin

Exciting stuff tonight - DS1 was showing me how he could do animation on powerpoint so I was playing around with it too.........and then decided to play around on PD - OMG I've got a project up my sleeves now I've discovered what else I can do on there........

madhairday · 17/02/2011 23:10

I've got one on the go too Baroque - what are we all like Grin

TotallyUnheardOf · 18/02/2011 01:57

Tee hee at your namechange, Baroque...

I have tried to do too much today and now it's nearly 2 a.m. and I am both knackered and wide awake (if that makes sense!).

Spent the day trying to juggle work emails and tidy the house as we have people coming to stay this weekend and I haven't properly got things straight since we got back from the US. Then I took dd1 to the library while dd2 was at football, only to find that the library was closed. Got dd2 from football. Fed us all. Went to band practice (me and the dds play in a brass band). Got home after 10 (the dds get picked up by dh earlier) and decided I'd save time tomorrow by going to the 24-hour Tesco tonight. Got back from Tesco, discovered that my attempt to delegate work stuff to someone else had backfired as they'd messed it up, so sorted that out and put together a handout for a talk I'm doing next week... and PHEW! Nearly the weekend, and I am looking forward to seeing my friend and her lovely dds.

Musst go to bed now...

DillyDaydreaming · 18/02/2011 06:57

Just marking my place here - need to find a spiritual thread to contribute to.

Me - was fairly atheist until a funeral in January and suddenly find myself attending Mass every Sunday, a faith course and taking steps towards becoming a Catholic. Wow - how did that all happen? It's great though and I am loving it - getting so much peace.

thanksamillion · 18/02/2011 07:46

You're very welcome Dilly! What an exciting time for you and well done for having the courage to go for it. Is your church encouraging? It sounds like it probably is if they have a faith course.

thanksamillion · 18/02/2011 08:24

I've just sat down to prepare something for Sunday school and guess what the topic is?

The Lord's Prayer! But since it's in Romanian I won't have to worry about which version it is Grin

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 18/02/2011 08:24

'ello Dilly - welcome to the thread.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 18/02/2011 08:58

oooo we did our leapfrog on The Lord's Prayer last month. ACtually no - it was back in October just checking through my powerpoints on y Laptop. We actually compared the "old" and the "new" versions of it. (so not much help to you as you're doing it in Romanian). But then when we did our prayers we said it again with actions........yes I know that sounds odd but

This is how it went - they all stood in a circle holding hands. Then

Our Father - still holding hands

In Heaven - holdings hands, but up in the air

Hallowed be your name - hands still held but down again, and heads bowed

Your Kingdom come - release hands and beckon with one hand

Your will be done - salute

On earth - stamp feet (just the once lol)

As it is in Heaven - single hand clap above heads

Give us this day our daily bread - hands held out like you do for communion

Forgive us our sins - hands clasped and held close to themselves

As we forgive those who sin against us - shake the hand of the people on either side of you

Lead us not into temptation - cover eyes with hands

But deliver us from evil - hand held out in front with palm facing forward (bit like the "talk to the hand thing that teens did a year or two back)

For thine is the Kingdom - one hand above head pointing upwards

The power - hand still pointing upwards, other hand punch the air

And the glory - hands held up above head palms open

Forever and ever - making a circle with one hand in front

Amen - continue circle like they're winding something up and then aaaaaaaaaaa-MEN (with men punching the air again with the hand that was "winding"

(do you know the "wind-up Amen"?? That's what we call it anyhow - I know BF's kid learned it at Spring Harvest a few years ago.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 18/02/2011 09:01

well - that was my explanation made up from the powerpoint slides I'd made for each one as a reminder for us leading it

\link{http://www.barnabasinchurches.org.uk/pages/data.asp?layout=page.htm&Type=&Id=2618\I've just found it here explained much better} Grin

thanksamillion · 18/02/2011 09:20

Thanks Baroque that's brilliant. I think I'll try and do that with them on Sunday. Then I'm going to give them a print out of it and they can decorate it to take home. Excellent. I just need to check that I can fit the actions to the Romanian version (which I don't know off by heart yet Blush)
