I wanted to put some random thoughts and stuff regarding church, without it having to be a debate or a specific topic (and not prayers, either)

It's basically, a "what happened at church (or in my musical/spiritual life) this week" thread. Grin
Please join me!

I'll start:

We had Midnight Mass (on Christmas Eve, would you believe!), and it was half past 11, everyone was sitting and ready for the service to start - I waved the organist to give me my notes: he was just about to plat them when:
" TAXI FOR suchandsuch " came blaring out of our speaker system. Angry
There's a Wetherspoon's over the road and looks like the DJ's mike was on the same frequency as our radio mikes.
So, all the congregation started giggling and we had to wait 5 minutes until everyone was calm and collected enough to carry on.

OP posts:

chicka chicka in a chicken tree! Grin

nickelbabe · 07/02/2011 13:09

yeah, we're not doing anything that requires clapping. Hmm

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 07/02/2011 13:09

Definitely in the 2 books I've got with it in it's a chorus.

nickelbabe · 07/02/2011 13:11

okay - well, if it's done at the offertory, it will be better a bit longer.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 07/02/2011 13:11

oh - no you can't clap to it - that's why it's dull - it's all about "clapping" but it's like singing make me a channel Grin (it's just the words that say that - it doesn't mean you have to Wink)

Yes - it's actually quite a funny/catchy tune - but the words just make me PMSL.

nickelbabe · 07/02/2011 13:13

okay, i'll have a look later.
(except maybe i won't, cos it's our 6-mont-a-versary today, and i think after my hymning yesterday he might divorce me if i put him through any more!Shock )

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 07/02/2011 13:13

oh yes - the dreaded "is the offertory hymn long enough" moment. I can't improvise to save myself so always make sure we have a nice long hymn for the offertory Grin

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 07/02/2011 13:14

awwwww happy 6 months Grin

This weekend was my 1yr since I moved out of exH's house anniversary Grin

nickelbabe · 07/02/2011 13:18

our last vicar had a thing where, if he thought the hymn wasn't long enough, he'd turn on his mic after it was finished and say he wanted to do another verse/chorus.
what the stupid man couldn't understand was that the orgnaist, the choir and most of the congregation had already moved their hymnbooks from the page of the hymn, and then had to faff around getting the right page again.
many times, the organists would get very annoyed about it, when they could have just twiddled a bit if vicar hadn't interfered.

Happy 1yr anniversary! Grin
I hope your flat is all set up now how you want it Grin

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 07/02/2011 13:22

flat????????? I don't have a flat - I have a gorgeous 3 bedroom house Grin (well it's not "mine" it belongs to the LL).

How could the vicar not have realised that by half way through the last verse most of the congregation have already started closing their books/finding the next hymn????????

BetsyBoop · 07/02/2011 13:41

BA - I agree with the food/books/lots of quiet toys suggestions. It does get easier, both as they get older & as they get more used to it. Mine are now 3 & 5 and are mostly fine if I take just one of them (if they are there together they sometimes end up winding each other up too...) DS (3) loves lacing cards, keeps him occupied for a good half hour! DD (5) loves doing pictures or practising her writing in a fab write-on/wipe-off book she has. (We don't have a creche, no one to run it, we have a monthly sunday school for 0-5, but I run that, so no respite there Grin)

Don't get me started on hymns that set me off or send tingles up my spine...
There are a couple of hymns that were my Mum's favourites that always have me in floods of tears, as does "I vow to thee my country" on Rememberance Sunday.

Also I had a detatched retina two & a bit years ago & have now had 4 eye ops and every time on the run up to an op & immediately after there seem to be hymns and/or bible passages talking about being "blind" or seeing again etc...makes me shiver...

nickelbabe · 07/02/2011 13:51

Blush oops, sorry - Blush
house

nickelbabe · 07/02/2011 13:52

vicar knows nothing about music - really doesn't have a clue.
feel sorry for the parish he's gone to.

nickelbabe · 07/02/2011 13:53

Betsy - concentrate on the seeing again part

nickelbabe · 07/02/2011 13:54

we don't have a sunday school, either - at the moment we only have one child - cue poor 8-year-old choirboy trying to keep his eyes open during the sermon Wink

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 07/02/2011 14:51

Grin it's ok.

I've just been out and bought new light bulbs, a new night light and (the bit I'll have most fun with) a CD/DVD labelling kit, and some blank DVD's Grin

nickelbabe · 07/02/2011 15:08

oooh! Grin
that sounds exciting!

I'm panicking now that admin lady didn't actually receive my email about not changing my name and the benefice directory will be printed with this woman that doesn't exist - and then everyone in the fucking church will believe that's my name, and I won't be able to stop them calling me it!
AngryShock
the horror!!!

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 07/02/2011 15:20

yes - once I've got somehting that works well on my DVD-RW - I'm going to write it to the DVD-R, and make a label.........and hopefully get some DVD case inserts and make a proper DVD Grin

nickelbabe · 07/02/2011 15:36

oh! that's brilliant!
you'll have to take photos of the first few.

Baroque the film producer!
there - that's your new calling!

just been googling this grammar rule - most of the sites that come up are american sites, and they all say "is it i" "i am she" etc.
Angry

trying to prove my point! why is American english so different? Confused
I found the BBC site on the subject, and the first comment is by an American, so wrong!
and the guy who wrote I the Lord of Sea and Sky is American.... Hmm
sensible BBC

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 07/02/2011 15:40

oh I will do. Hehe @ Film Producer Grin

madhairday · 07/02/2011 15:51

Can't keep up with you two!!!

No that was not a Kendrick one although have to say there are some spine tingling Kendrick ones, Thorns in the Straw comes to mind, and O Lord the Clouds are gathering, some excellent words in there (well someone has to stand up for His Kendrickness) Grin

We do that version of The Lord's my shepherd lots and yes it's the chorus, it can also be divided into male/female parts which sounds good if done properly and hideous if not.

Loving the chikka chikka chicken. Must have a look through MP because there are some corkers in there.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 07/02/2011 15:59

oh Thorns in the Straw is lovely yes.

nickelbabe · 07/02/2011 16:00

oh, I googled the lyric and that's all that came up - maybe he did an "arrangement" of it.
No standing up for him - it's my thread [strict glare] Wink

talking of Graham Kendrick (suddenly hoping he's not one of those people that googles himself.....)
you'll never guess what DH chose as the Offertory hymn this week?

nickelbabe · 07/02/2011 16:01

(and we will be doing Thorns in the Straw sometime during Lent, now, i think)

madhairday · 07/02/2011 17:34

Shine Jesus Shine? Grin
