I wanted to put some random thoughts and stuff regarding church, without it having to be a debate or a specific topic (and not prayers, either)

It's basically, a "what happened at church (or in my musical/spiritual life) this week" thread. Grin
Please join me!

I'll start:

We had Midnight Mass (on Christmas Eve, would you believe!), and it was half past 11, everyone was sitting and ready for the service to start - I waved the organist to give me my notes: he was just about to plat them when:
" TAXI FOR suchandsuch " came blaring out of our speaker system. Angry
There's a Wetherspoon's over the road and looks like the DJ's mike was on the same frequency as our radio mikes.
So, all the congregation started giggling and we had to wait 5 minutes until everyone was calm and collected enough to carry on.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 03/02/2011 17:32

oh! I see

right am back with a pile of books mostly ancient books - but one or two modern ones - got a coffee, DS1 is sorting milk from the shop and scrambled eggs on toast for dinner - lets see what I've got Grin

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 03/02/2011 17:33

ooops - not a good start - first one I've checked is too old - published in 1872 Grin

nickelthenaughtybutnicefairy · 03/02/2011 17:33

okay, don't take too long, though, cos i've got to go home (WI tonight)

nickelthenaughtybutnicefairy · 03/02/2011 17:35

see, this is where the internet isn't so great - you've got to be able to check contemporary resources - most internets and new books would say "yes, this is the updated version of events"

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 03/02/2011 17:35

oh bugger 1920, no date - but appear to be around 1900, lets try "Hymns and Their Tunes" Grin

nickelthenaughtybutnicefairy · 03/02/2011 17:37

how odd we must look to the outside world...

i'm glad i found you, baroque! Grin

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 03/02/2011 17:37

oh god it's getting worse 1852 haha

Redemption Hymnal 1951 didn't have it in.....

no date - but anceint looking

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 03/02/2011 17:39

another 2 old - and now onto the last hope - a much much newer book about the story of Christian Music - I don't hold out much hope......it covers from Gregorian Chant to Black Gospel Grin

nickelthenaughtybutnicefairy · 03/02/2011 17:40

i'll have a look in mine, too - i've got a couple of A&Ms at home and congregational praise.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 03/02/2011 17:41

None of the buggers have it in they're either too general (factual books about hymns/music) or they're too old.

nickelthenaughtybutnicefairy · 03/02/2011 17:42

hmm, we have the first SoF at church - i will text DH.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 03/02/2011 17:44

Right original (I think?) SoF has the

Be at the start of each verse.

It's also got both Byrne and Hull down as the Translations/versions.

nickelthenaughtybutnicefairy · 03/02/2011 17:44

i've asked him to look in AMR as well.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 03/02/2011 17:46

start of each line even - will copy it out later over a glass of wine Grin

Will have a nosey at church as well - we're got an assortment of odd (older) hymn books in the cupboard at church.

nickelthenaughtybutnicefairy · 03/02/2011 17:51

songs and hymns of fellowship has Be, so my version
year 1987

nickelthenaughtybutnicefairy · 03/02/2011 17:53

oh, we looked at the same book! Blush

AMR has not got Slane at all.

right, going home - I'll check all others i've got at hone.

see you tomorrow!

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 03/02/2011 17:55

Hehe - yes but mine was the 1989 reprint Grin so not quite the same Wink

cya tomorrow Grin

nickelthenaughtybutnicefairy · 04/02/2011 10:12

I didn't expect that to kill the thread - everyone is allowed to post when i'm not here! Grin

Just to update - Congregational Praise (dunno what year, but old ) has not got Be at the beginning of every line. so it's the same as yours (although I think Congregational Praise is a methodist book?)

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 04/02/2011 11:15

Grin Nickel

I guess then if that old one has got the one without the "Be" we can probably say t's not the Orange Book faffing around with it per se - but rather - well I guess some churches have always done it like that.

nickelthenaughtybutnicefairy · 04/02/2011 11:35
Grin

yes you can safely say that - I reckon it's a denomination thing rather than a "style" thing.

I'm sitting here with loads of hymn books trying to compile a list of hymns for lent - the Hideous book, as we know, leaves so much out, and changes words too (you were fasting in the wild? tempted still yet unbeguiled - unbeguiled???? it means tempted so he's tempted but not tempted??? Confused )
undefiled is obviously too harsh a word to use. (makes you wonder why they're christains if they can't take a bit of blood....)

My idea was to make a mini-book of hymns for lent, that included modern and old hymns, but all with the proper words. I'll probably give up, because I already have to miss out palm sunday and Mothering Sunday because of there being too many, and i'll have to put in suitable eucharist hymns too - my idea was supposed to be that it replaced the Hideous book for the whole 6 weeks...

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 04/02/2011 12:45

I am PMSL @

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 04/02/2011 13:02
