My poor dog.

Woke up this morning to a strange feeling. Freedom. The dog hadnt managed to sneak into the bed despite the door being open. Odd I thought as I wandered into the kitchen. On my way through I noticed my dog sprawled out on the living room floor.
When tea was made she was gone I thought she had maybe gone into DH, she hadnt, so I then checked DS room, she wasnt in there either. Found her curled up panting and shaking on the bathroom floor. (she never goes in the bathroom)
She is now sitting in her bed panting very loudly and shaking. I have found the remmnants of an Ikea pencil next to where she was laying last night.
Feel helpless because vet doesnt open till 9am and she is obviously suffering right now and I cant do anything.
My poor little baisey boo.

does the vet have an emergency out of hours service? It sounds quite urgent.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 08/06/2010 08:22

See now DH is saying that she got really worn out on her walk last night. And that she might just be aching??

well, I don't know, not being there, don't know too much about dogs..if you are worried I'd call them now though.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 08/06/2010 08:26

have to head to nursery, hope your dog is ok!!!

sharbieinbackofthequattro · 08/06/2010 08:31

Any blood around mouth/in saliva ? - my dog had part of a stick stuck down his throat and it took a while for us to realise something was wrong but it sounds similar. He needed an op at the vets to get it out and stitch up.Good luck.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 08/06/2010 08:46

We're going to take DS to nursery and go straight to vets from there and see if they can see us straight away. I feel silly phoning for an emergency vet if all she has done is pulled a muscle!

She is still shaking and panting and wont come when called. I need all the luck I can get to try and get her to the car!

aww the poor dog, hope all goes well!

Blackduck · 08/06/2010 10:02

Get to vet asap - ours stuck a stick through his soft palate - no real blood, but lots of panting and shaking...... (and a 250 quid vet bill - ouch!)

AmazingBouncingFerret · 08/06/2010 10:35

Yeah she is there now. Having xrays done. Just waiting for the phone call that will tell me if it's a couple of hundred quid or half a grand!

Do they think she ate something that is stuck?

hope they call soon.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 08/06/2010 10:45

Well the fact that she wont jump up concerned the vet, we had to lift her into the carboot and she isnt exactly light!

The vet had a feel around her stomach, he didnt seem to find anything to concern him but he just wants to make sure, better safe than sorry. Especially when it comes to Ikea pencils! It serves me right for keeping it!

Defnintely nothing in her mouth, so if there is anything stuck it's further down.

poor thing, hopefully they have given her some good painkillers.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 08/06/2010 10:55

They said they will knock her out for the xray. Is that normal do you know??

OP posts:
WynkenBlynkenandNod · 08/06/2010 10:59

Oh dear ABF, I am sorry. Can't be sure but I think it is normal to knock them out for xray which is why when people decide to get them hip scored they do it when spayed/neutured.

My dog is under a general atm as being spayed and having an endoscopy. I'm resorting to carpet cleaning to keep myself busy.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 08/06/2010 11:01

I think it is normal, in case they won't keep still.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 08/06/2010 11:28

Oh yes she definitely wouldnt keep still! Im cleaning out the hamster cage to keep my mind off it. It's a huge rota stack cage so that has kept me busy!

You did what??

You took your kid to nursery before you took your sick dog to the vet?

Knowing that the poor dog had been suffering since before 8am, and was clearly in pain and distress?

Despite being advised to call the emergency vet. which you shouldn't need to be told anyway.

FFS.

Words fail me.

I pray to god that the poor dog doesn't lose her life or suffer even more because of this selfish stupidity.

MargaretAtwood3660 · 08/06/2010 12:10

Valhalla you are being OTT.

I agree it would have been best to sort out an obviously sick dog ASAP but you don't need to be so shouty.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 08/06/2010 12:22

the op's DH thought the dog was just exhausted/achy, people don't think straight in these situations, she clearly loves her dog.

Vallhala · 08/06/2010 12:24

I've re-read and I stand by what I've said, MargaretAtwood.

I'm afraid I can't go along with pussyfooting about. You said, "it would have been best to sort out an obviously sick dog".

No. It would be cruel, selfish, immoral and heartless not to. Not to mention illegal (Animal Welfare Act 2006, 4 (1) (a).

Or is that not enough for me to get angry and upset about?

Disenchanted3 · 08/06/2010 12:26

Calm down Vall, shes getting her dog seen

how do you not know the nursery is on the way to the vets?

I'd rather drop my child off first than risk her seeeing/hearing something horrid at the vets!

Disenchanted3 · 08/06/2010 12:28

Once her daughter was at nursery she could concentrate 100% on the dog.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 08/06/2010 12:28

well the op wasn't sure if dog was sick-maybe guilty of denial or ignorance but not wilful cruelty

needsharesinduracell · 08/06/2010 12:28

Don't know what the wording is of the Animal Welfare Act but I would be surprised if it said anything that means dropping your child off at nursery on the way to the vets rather than going straight to the vets is illegal.

Disenchanted3 · 08/06/2010 12:30

Val you act like she just put the dog in the garden,

she took it to the vets that very morning!

I don't understand why you are freaking out?!
