My poor dog.

Woke up this morning to a strange feeling. Freedom. The dog hadnt managed to sneak into the bed despite the door being open. Odd I thought as I wandered into the kitchen. On my way through I noticed my dog sprawled out on the living room floor.
When tea was made she was gone I thought she had maybe gone into DH, she hadnt, so I then checked DS room, she wasnt in there either. Found her curled up panting and shaking on the bathroom floor. (she never goes in the bathroom)
She is now sitting in her bed panting very loudly and shaking. I have found the remmnants of an Ikea pencil next to where she was laying last night.
Feel helpless because vet doesnt open till 9am and she is obviously suffering right now and I cant do anything.
My poor little baisey boo.

No it's not enough to get THIS upset about!

She posted at 7.57. The dog was being put in the car by 8.46.

Overreaction imo.

Eleison · 08/06/2010 12:33

Gosh, Valhalla, she dropped the DS off at nursery on the way to the vets. That might well have been the most practical thing to do, depending on locations of each, and giventhe opening hours of the vet.

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 08/06/2010 12:33

Vall, whatever your feelings, please for a moment give the OP a break. The dog is at the vet and having a general and it's flipping worrying as you well know when that happens. Mine is being spayed now and I'm on tenterhooks.

And to be fair, I have to pass both the DC's school to get to the vets which may as others have said be the case here.

Disenchanted3 · 08/06/2010 12:34

She didn't fail to get the dog seen though

I'm sure that applies to awful people who, on seeing their animal is sick they ignore it, leaving the animal to slowly die, or abandon the clearly sick animal for someone else to deal with.

Finding your dog ill at 8am, calling the vets, dropping your child off at nursery then going straight to the vets is NOT cruel or neglectful in any way.

I can see you care about the welfare of animals but I suggest you channel your energies into actual real cases of abuse and neglect rather than picking on someone who got her dog to a vets as soon as she could and obviously cares about her dog immensly.

Eleison · 08/06/2010 12:37

Sorry, bouncing ferret. Don't let this thread tangent get you down. You were on your way to vets within an hour of seeing poorly dog. You acted fine. Of course your DS was taking your attention also, how could he not.

I do hope the dog is doing ok.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 08/06/2010 12:38

i was maybe accidentally harsh, by denial i mean in a bit of shock, and by ignorance i meant mybe being unaware of seriousness of symptoms. Give her a break, valhalla

Vallhala · 08/06/2010 12:39

Disenchanted, we differ greatly. That my dog was suffering and needed veterinary treatment - and the OP did state that the dog was suffering - would (and *has) take(n) precedence over anything my child might witness at or en route to the vet. My children wouldn't die as a result of witnessing an ill or injured dog.

We shall no doubt never agree or see each other's point of view.

Dog "curled up", "shaking and panting", "obviously suffering" and in a room where she never goes, with evidence that she had chewed/eaten something potentially harmful, even potentially fatal, rings alarm bells to me. Dog needs a vet - no, dog needed an emergency veterinary consultation. Dog does not need to wait until a child has been taken to nursery, at least an hour after being found in this state.

If I've offended, I make no apologies unless I'm corrected by the OP and I've misinterpreted the situation. I've worked with dogs and seen too much suffering for too long to sit back and say nothing.

needsharesinduracell · 08/06/2010 12:43

Thank you for the wording Vallhala. I can see that if one wanted to be extreme, one could interpret that wording as meaning that taking, say, 15 minutes longer than is strictly necessary to get to the vet might technically be an offence.

But it seems obvious that the intention of the Act isn't to prosecute or punish families who drop children off on the way to the vet, it's to protect animals whose owners don't bother taking them at all, or delay unnecessarily for days hoping to avoid vet bills or whatever. Fortunately common sense usually prevails, and I think when someone is posting on here asking for support, the same should apply.

booyhoo · 08/06/2010 12:44

can i just say that if i noticed my dog ill at 8.00 AM then it probably would take me 45 mins to get my dcs up dressed and fed in order to be able to leave th house to go to the vets, also, nursery is on the way to my vets aswell so it would be the first stop and would only delay the arrival at the vets by about 2 minutes, i dont think OP has acted neglectfully at all.

Vallhala · 08/06/2010 12:45

Anyway, I'll pee off now and go do something more constructive. I have a couple of healthy 2-3 yo SBTs to find rescue places for before tomorrow morning when the vet will go into the pound and kill them.

At best we might agree to differ? You guys may well disagree with me, but in my own defence I know that if I posted this amongst my rescue contacts I'd get a completely different response.

I'll shut up now and give you all a break, and having caused a riot (not my intention) will return only to check that the dog is ok and to apologise to the OP if I'm corrected because I've misinterpreted the situation.

Disenchanted3 · 08/06/2010 12:45

Well I wouldn't think twice about dropping my child off.

Does the fact that every other person on the thread has acknowledged OP did the right thing by getting her to the vets within an hour? and that dropping her child off en route was most sensible, mean nothing? i THINK YOU NEED TO GET SOME PERSPECTIVE - PEOPLE DON'T HAVE TELEPORT MACHINES THINGS DO TAKE time -op DID NOT LEAVE THE DOG WHILST SE WENT SHOPPING OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT!

OP well done for getting your dog seen quickly, i hope he is ok x

Disenchanted3 · 08/06/2010 12:48

Oops sorry about the caps!

Vallhala I agree we will just have to differ on this,

I'd hate to see your reaction to someone that really did neglect their animal.

booyhoo · 08/06/2010 12:48

and just before anyone says it, i have no OH with me to stay with dcs so i would have to take them with me.

OrmRenewed · 08/06/2010 12:52

Any news?

misdee · 08/06/2010 12:59

any news on pooch?

it would also take me 45min to get everyone up, dog put on the wagon (i dont drive, so have a red wagon i can put the dog crate in), wallk pasts kids school on the way to the vet so would send them in and be at the vets doors by the time they unlocked it.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 08/06/2010 13:04

Sorry, wow, kicked off over my ickle baisey boo.
I was feeding DS (wouldnt want to him to starve and be done for neglect ) and putting the baby down for her nap.
The vets is within spitting distance of the nursery. Blaise is not happy to be around other dogs, she was attacked when a pup so juggling a 3 yr old and 5 month old and the dog was just something that wasnt going to happen.
As is obvious I do give a rats arse about my dog and even though I am a lover of all things meat I am very animal friendly.
DH even took morning off work to help in the fiasco that was this morning. I dont drive and suffer from scoliosis and Diastematomyelia of the spinal cord and dragging 2 children and reluctant dog down 3 flights of stairs isnt easy at the best of times.

Im quite put out actually. Ive always admired your work and agreed with your posts on the dog threads Vallhala. But it just goes to show that the written word is very open to suggestion.

OrmRenewed · 08/06/2010 13:06

Please don't be put out ferret

How is the hound? We need to know!

Disenchanted3 · 08/06/2010 13:07

Don't feel bad ABF, almost everyone agrees you did the very best for your poochy!

How is he?

AmazingBouncingFerret · 08/06/2010 13:10

Blaise is still at the vets no call as of yet, was going to phone at half 1. But dont want to keep bugging them, I can imagine it would take some time.

OP posts:
OrmRenewed · 08/06/2010 13:12

Fingers crossed.

booyhoo · 08/06/2010 13:13

i would phone anyway, the receptinist should be able to tell you what stage they are at. also if she was left in this morning she would probably have been first in surgery so it could well be over and done now.

millimurphy · 08/06/2010 13:14

Can say with some authority that this dog is in no way neglected. Bouncingferret person has done the right thing and took dog to vet - not the act of a careless or neglectful owner. Perhaps Vallhala should stick to cases of real neglect instead of pouncing on people who are doing their best while coping with busy families.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 08/06/2010 13:24

Just phoned them, they say she has just had her pre-meds and is going in for xrays now.
Just had to explain to DS what they are doing to her... wasnt easy!
