Puppy got sworn at and kicked by a jogger today...

she is only little and looks like a teddy bear - Bichon and toy poodle cross - can't even reach your knees if she jumps up.

Walking in woods with a friends and her lab x puppy and 5 children under 5 with us (2 in a buggy and 3 running around). Going a long a path and a jogger is running up - he shakes his head as he passes us as the pups have shown some interest in him - they come back to us but go back up to him when he is further away - he then stops and screams at mine to F Off but she sniffs a bit more so he boots her in the stomach. I couldn't believe it - most people at least give me the chance to say I'm sorry and am training her etc.

He was too far away to say antyhing although some other walkers shouted at him but then off he ran.

Please tell me that I will be more traumatised than the dog? Was in a wood with loads of dog walkers so can't believe it doesn't happen to him all the time.

Had just taken her off the trainng line but quickly put it back on - now need to re-gain my faith in mankind.

" I had NO IDEA that there were so many dog hating posters on mn"

It always surprise me too. In RL I know perhaps one.

EdwardianSnowdropExpert · 22/02/2010 17:04

But there are aren't there Fimbow (genuine question). I know all my favorite beaches in Wales are dog free from april - october - I'm happy with this btw, nowt worse than a dog turd sandcastle.

Bella32 · 22/02/2010 17:04

Iggy - it doesn't matter where I am.

There's a reason I don't go mountaineering any more. That was very hairy.

pagwatch · 22/02/2010 17:05

Edwardian

Butthere are loads of such places. We take our lovely dog for big long walks every weekend and we met other people - dog walkers, joggers, cyclists etc - and it is fine.

Most people take great care withtheir dogs and ensure that they don't run at people. And most people keep an eye out for the lolloping over excited gait of a dog who is not well trained.
I call PenisDog to heel the minute I see a child or horse or jogger or someone who looks anxious if he wags and sniffs towards them.
Similarly I will put my body between DS2 and excitable badly trained bouncy dogs when i see them.
PenisDog is 4 , DS2 is 13 and the incident I described is the only bad one I can recall.

This is mumsnet. People take a side and express string views that are not always indicative of their RL experience but more a reaction to the alternate view.

I have never actually drop kicked a dog...and only hinted at it once

iggypiggy · 22/02/2010 17:06

but bella I want to trip over the young fit men too

FimBOW · 22/02/2010 17:06

I don't hate dogs, I just don't want them jumping up at my children or chasing after them.

There should be areas for people to train their dogs at. But it is not feasible and unlikely to happen but in an ideal world and all that malarky.

Where I used to live in Scotland there was a park that had a specific dog walking area.

pagwatch · 22/02/2010 17:07

hmm - string views?
strong views.

FimBOW · 22/02/2010 17:10

The dog ban on beaches from April to October are in place here too (Norfolk), sadly some dog owners flout the rules and lets face it, unless there is some official policing the beach, who exactly is going to stop them? My dh challenged someone once and was met with a load of abuse.

Bella32 · 22/02/2010 17:10

iggy - trust me, it soon loses its charm

SoMuchToBits · 22/02/2010 17:10

I don't think all of us who have posted on here are actually dog-haters. I do admit that personally I don't particularly like dogs, and wouldn't ever want to have one myself, but I don't actually hate them - I'm just extremely frightened of them.

I think one solution to letting dogs off the lead would be to have large "dog-exercising" areas in parks etc. These areas could be fenced off, so people who wanted to let their dogs off the lead to have a run around could do so, but those such as myself who are scared of dogs could avoid those areas.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 22/02/2010 17:13

Oh a typival MN dog thread. Lack of responsibility versus unreasonable over-reaction.

Jogger was unreasonable - dog owner should be more responsible. Does that just about cover it? Thought so.

pagwatch · 22/02/2010 17:16

at saggar

oh loads of us have said that but thats no fun !

EdwardianSnowdropExpert · 22/02/2010 17:18

lol @pag's penisdog. Did you do the supermarket aisle name check with that one?

I only just caught your drop kick frisson post

not you of course pag

BendyBob · 22/02/2010 17:18

Maybe people bothered by dogs take action into their own hands because the law does so little to protect them from uncontrolled dogs/inconsiderate owners.

overthemill · 22/02/2010 17:19

i adore my dog and my previous dogs. I train them and work very hard at doing so. At some point pups have to be let off the lead in real situations (not just in class or in our large garden) to test if they can indeed cope with real life and come back when ever called. 95% my young dog returns when i call him. Most people dont mind if he goes up to them, i always apologise if he bothers people by running up to them (love the people wo go for walks on the moor with their best clothes on!). I run and get him if kids are up ahead and i talk to the kids and get them to pet him if they want to and their parents allow it.

my dd loves all animals and lies all over the dog. I would NEVER leave her alone in a room with him - he knows his place in the family is downstairs. But he is a family pet and is lovely and soft and cute (in my eyes, to you he may be 28k of terror).

My convoluted point is that all dogs are technically a risk to all but in practice small puppies are NOT.

leave off us dog owners and rant and rave about the moron who kicked a small defenceless creature because it was curious. And i'd report the kitten flinger to the rspca just as i have called the police to report kids who bully me and my kids on walks by swinging baseball bats at us on a walk in the woods near home, or the person downstairs from my first flat who i thought hit her kids in the middle of the night. Bullies and cowards dont pick on things bigger than themselves.

Bella32 · 22/02/2010 17:20

So funny, saggar.

Except you've skipped the bit where the OP does take responsibility.

Your version's funnier, but inaccurate.

EdwardianSnowdropExpert · 22/02/2010 17:27

SoMuch, I live in the cuntry, parks here are a bit infra dig , when I get this dog and once it is super trained to within an inch of it's life and can do a perfect recall (without the squirrel suit and Cheese Lure Hat) I plan on setting forth with wellies and letting the dog off the lead so it can run about along bridle paths and so forth.

That's OK surely? [another genuine question]. It seems slightly unfair on the dog to never let it have a good run (I don't run) off the lead in case one day in the wilds it happens upon someone who has a dog phobia.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 22/02/2010 17:31

Oh good. Saved me from reading the thread Bella It is dinner time you know.

SoMuchToBits · 22/02/2010 17:38

It's a difficult one Edwardian because I can see that dogs do need that sort of exercise, but on the other hand, some people do get very frightened of approaching dogs (even if they are small puppies). I don't know what the solution is - with many phobias you can deal with it by avoiding the situation (e.g. I'm very scared of heights, but try to avoid being anywhere with a big drop). Obviously I take steps to avoid being near dogs if I can (e.g. I wouldn't visit a friend with dogs unless they could make sure the dogs stayed in a different room etc) but on public footpaths it's harder.

EdwardianSnowdropExpert · 22/02/2010 18:07

It is a difficult one SoMuch. I can appreciate how it must feel if you hate dogs to have them bounding up, jumping up or chasing you. I hope I'll be one of those dog owners whose dog never does that...

EggyAllenPoe · 22/02/2010 18:08

is it time to remind everyone once more that this is pets

not AIBU

if i hated horses, it would just be idiocy of me to head to the tack room

and there seem to be so mny dog haters becaus there are a few who go around trawling for dog threads to pour their poison over. same names every time...

MrsL123 · 22/02/2010 18:21

Actually I was wondering how/why so many people who don't like dogs ended up in the pet section of this very large forum and choose to waste their time posting on this thread

Frankly I couldn't be bothered to post on a thread for the sole purpose of getting irate and/or cursing at complete strangers. But each to their own I guess...!

GothDetective · 22/02/2010 18:24

Active Threads?

OrmRenewed · 22/02/2010 18:29

So it is. I had just assumed it was AIBU due to the level of crossness.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 22/02/2010 18:30

Pets is not just for dog-lovers though. You can dislike dogs but love hamsters, for example. You don't encounter aggrieved joggers with hamsters. The worst thing that can happen is that you have to fish them out of the stew.
