Please tell me this wasn't what it looked like....

Earlier today I picked up my big soppy male cat (nearly 3) for a cuddle. As I put him down I noticed thick creamy liquid all down my hand-wash only (of course) jumper. It was really, really smelly - a disgusting smell!

He is neutered - was done at 6 months - and hasn't showed any sexual signs since. Or at least not that I've noticed. He didn't seem particularly happy when I was holding him - nothing unusual certainly.

What was this? And why did it happen?!

have you checked him over to make sure he isn't injured? if it was really smelly could it be pus or something from a wound/abcess???

SOunds like a burst abscess to me, has he seemed unwell recently?
Don't worry he didn't ejaculate on you !!!

I haven't checked him over - will go and do that now - but he has been fine all day: running, jumping on and off the walls, rolling around the floor while waiting for his supper that he has gobbled down etc etc. It was certainly a really disgusting smell, and the next thing he did was lick his nether regions. I will go and check though....

Could be his anal glands too. Quite smelly and horrible. They may be totally normal but can also get infected. If you have any doubts then best get your vet to take a look to be on the safe side.
As previous posters have said an abscess is also a possibility. He should see a vet if you suspect that too.

I've just checked him all over, including every single nail, and no sign of anything. I stroked him quite firmly all over as well, to see if he was tender anywhere, adn again, nothing unusual, and he just started purring! He seems completely himself over than this 'leakage' earlier, and I've no idea where this was from.

Actually, one of my cats was perfectly well when he had an abscess and I only found out he had it when it burst all over my shorts (bleugh). Bum area is one of the most common areas for an abscess as cats are often bitten on the bum/back leg area as they're running away from other cats!

my cats often get a burst abscess on their legs if they've been in a fight (local tom cat who terrorises them....)- sometimes I can tell they're brewing something as very sleepy before it bursts, sometimes I notice the abscess but other times I don't till it pops - it's the cat's way of dealing with infected wounds - they just ooze with pus and all the infection is popped out so it doesn't enter the body. the vet usually gives them an antibiotic jab to be on the safe side.

I'll have another look, and ask DH to check too. If it doesn't happen again, and given he shows no signs of being unwell at all - in fact he has been particularly full of beans all day - do you think it's alright just to watch and wait?

p.s. Just watched a video on emptying a cat's anal glands - the secretions shown are thick brown toothpaste-like material, whereas this was definitely much runnier and cream. Hmmmmm

My cats sometimes used to have rather damp smelly bums when they'd had fish to eat, or a particular brand of tinned fish cat food...

Speaking from experience not all anal gland contents are the same. They most certainly can be as you described.

How much stuff was there?
How gooey was it- like toothpaste, like pate, like hummus, like tomato soup?
and did it look blood tinged?

(but my first thought was anal glands)

Wilkiepedia - I know, I know! DH won't even go near me now I've watched that video, which is nothing compared to how my cat would react if I started trying to do that to him!

Now bets are all very well, but how am I going to come up with an answer to satisfy these bets? I refuse point blank to 'squeeze and see'.....

It was cream, not blood-stained I don't think, about a table-spoonful (although spread all over jumper so difficult to quantify), smooth in texture but definitaly runnier than toothpaste. More like double cream perhaps.

Any advances?

p.s. The smell was beyond disgusting, adn very strong. I did think sexual, because it sort of had that smell, if you see what I mean. Embarrassed now.....

you sure it wasn't just spray? my neutered boys spray a lot and occasionally in the house if a bit anxious (bleurgh!) - it's not thick stuff but can be a bit, ermmm, creamy......

my money's on pus... have had an absess burst in my face when i was examining it and have popped about a thousand absesses for a huge variety of cats and it can vary from white and creamy to yellow/green and blood tinged and always smells disgusting.

spunk it highly unlikely unless he was biting you and humping tbh, you'd probably have noticed that
