Has anyone got a black cat?????

Helloo - just had a call about a kitten that may be available in a few weeks.
But the lady said 'as long as you dont mind it being all black. I've had lots of people saying they wont have a black cat'.

I hadnt even thought about colour until she said that but just wondering - do people really avoid black cats in case they bring bad luck?

And has anyone got one?

I had one and he was the most beautiful and affectionate cat and as far as I know never brought any bad luck.
My vote goes to boy cats rather than girls - the ones I've had have been soppier and less timid - but I don't care about colour.

I had 2 They were lovely. When they lay in the sun, you could see black-on-black tabby markings on them!!

Very few cats are 100% black. Even mine, although black from nose to tail, had stray white hairs.

I've got one, his name is Alfie . He's been with me since January 2000, I got him from a rescue centre. He's about 7 now. We love him to bits and he has such a lovely docile personality. My DH also had a black cat when I met him, but sadly he had to be put to sleep in 2002 as he'd contracted very severe FIV . DH was devastated.

Growing up I had cats, either black & white (mainly black) or plain black. They're gorgeous and their fur always looks so sleek and shiny.

One of mine was Bagheera because he was long and sleek like a black panther

Complete and utter scaredy pants mind you so no resemblance there.

I still miss them both (left them with a neighbour when we moved because Bagheera was scared of the children)

I had one, a stray who adopted us. She was completely mad but I loved her. She lived to quite an old age considering how malnourished and neglected she was when we got her.

I'd love another one

We did have 2 Socci, but Farley (black & white) went out about 6 months ago and hasn't been seen since . Tried ringing around the vets and rescue centres but no one has seen hide nor hair of him. I suspect he's been adopted as he is criminally cute to look at and such a tart when it comes to affection from strangers! His road sense is too good to have been run over (we live very close to a dual carriageway).

Alfie is very shy with new people so he tends to find somewhere quiet to sleep when we have people over

Yes, we have one and we love her to bits - she's quite shy and a little nervous, took us longer to get her to trust us than her tabby friend (male), but she's ever so affectionate. I've no idea why you'd avoid a black cat - never heard of it! I'd say go ahead - it'll probably be fine.

I've had n/thing but black cats until a black and white cast of found her way into our lives. Black cats are wonderful - affectionate, silky fur, bags of personality! I prefer males to females myself, our black and white is mostly DH's cat. But our girl cat has definitely earned a place in my heart.

Forgot to ask the sex so dont know which it is.
We had both male and female when i was a child so hadnt given that any thought.

We have got a black cat. It never occured to be that a black cat might be unlucky. Wouldn't think twice about getting a black cat. Go for it.

I don't care for kittens much. They are cute but can be destructive so I prefer to adopt older cats from a rescue centre, but a blackie kitty I'd take on board any day! We have a two strays - a Persian pedigree and the black and white, but when one of them goes then we will get a black one next time.

What colour are the kitten's eyes? Some black cats have brilliant green eyes.

I have a black cat - Ozzy, prince of darkness. He's a manx and stupider than the average cat. DD calls him 'osh'. We have a tabby too, called Molly. She is also stupid and thinks that DDs polar bear rug is her mummy. DD calls her 'miaow'.

That's true Socci, you also get the added bonus of cats being pretty self-sufficient & independent

FWIW, I would always go for an older rescue cat than a kitten, just because I'm an old softie and hate the though of older cats being passed over for tinies and being left in those horrid cages in rescue centres . Kittens always go first, as lots of first time cat owners perceive rescue cats to be difficult and come with behavioural bagge, which is often farrrrrrrrrrrrr from the truth...

I have 2 black cats and always have had. In fact Coco has just come in for a cuddle.i have heard that thing about blsck cats being unlucky, but i read somewhere that having two is lucky.We also have a lunatic kitten who is grey called Cobaaaaazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzcvvvvvv web SORRY COCO decided to type something too.The kitten is called cobweb.

Black cats can be seen as either unlucky or lucky, depending on where you live. Black cats were seen as lucky in ancient times (and in some places they still are), but became associated with black magic and sorcery in mediaeval times due to their supposed association with witches. The Christian church, believing black cats to be the incarnation of evil, used to burn totally black cats on the day of the Feast of St John. Any white hairs were taken as a sign that the cat might not be a witch or the devil in disguise. This is probably why most black cats nowadays have a touch of white hair - those that were totally black became less common as they were persecuted so highly.

In the 17th century it was believed that cats were cures for all manner of illnesses, and it was common to sacrifice a black cat and bury its tail under the doorstep of a house to ensure that all members of the family would be protected from ill-health. Another belief was that the ashes from a pure black cat were a cure for blindness.

Some countries still maintain that black cats are unlucky because of the association with witchcraft. But in other countries they are seen as lucky; if an evil black cat crossed your path and did you no harm then you had been incredibly lucky - and hence the association with black cats and good luck in some areas.

That's an interesting theory re the rarity of pure black cats.

We have a tail-less black cat. Got her from the RSPCA. She had been in some sort of accident and must have had it removed by a vet. She is very affectionate and talkative - she's constantly miaowing - sweet but can drive you barmy sometimes
