Has anyone got a black cat?????

Helloo - just had a call about a kitten that may be available in a few weeks.
But the lady said 'as long as you dont mind it being all black. I've had lots of people saying they wont have a black cat'.

I hadnt even thought about colour until she said that but just wondering - do people really avoid black cats in case they bring bad luck?

And has anyone got one?

i have a black cat with only half a tail called scampy. she is lovely

expatinscotland · 29/03/2005 14:41

NDP
I agree 100% about older cats! Kittens take a lot of patience I don't have. My last cat before I left the US was 'Danner', a 13 year old rescue centre cat. How a/one could turn out a 13 year old cat is beyond me, but we shared two wonderful years together before he succumbed to cancer.

Our present cats were adults when they came into our lives, both as strays, however.

I, too, have always considered having black cats lucky.

Tetley · 29/03/2005 14:44

I also have a black cat (with white bits). I'd never thought about the superstition side of it. Had black cats when I was a kid as well (although I think they both got run over - so perhaps weren't very lucky )

I have a black cat called Whiskey, He is 13 and still like a kitten. I love black cats and can't imagine not having him!!
I also have a ginger girl who is a complete nutcase but gorgeous!!

scottishmumto1 · 29/03/2005 14:55

My ILs have a runty ginger tom that FIL found in a stair 16 years ago, and I swear that wee scrapper thinks he's a lion! I've never come across such a ballsy cat - and he hasn't even got his balls a/more!

colditzmum · 29/03/2005 15:03

I have a black and white un-neutered tom, as he is so affectionate and loving. he doesn't spray either, and never has, at least not in the house.

colditzmum · 29/03/2005 15:04

Oh, and he was a stray that turned up and refused to leave.

I've got one and I love her. She was 2nd hand so didn't get any choice in the colour, but to be honest I've never thought about it.

Friends got an almost entirely white cat and the hairs really show up on all my dark clothes whenever I stroke her.

Pmsl Pgmog

My ginger cat does this too!! She is the same age as Katie and they are both nearly 2. When she started bringing in mice she would jump in the window with the mouse still alive in her mouth and put in in the middle of the room in front of Katie!!
Funniest thing in the world coz I have 3 other kids who try to help catch it but in the end we always have to get the help of our black cat who pins them doen so we can get them!!

More often now though the poor little buggers are dead by the time she brings them in!!

Whiskey the black cat brings in elastic bands!!!!

magnolia1 · 29/03/2005 15:26

Sorry meant podmog

pinotgrigio · 29/03/2005 15:28

Expat - LOL at Chairman Miaow!!

Bearess · 29/03/2005 15:29

We have a black cat, she's a stunner called Tabitha. She is quite a scaredy cat because she is a rescue cat from Battersea Dogs Home (!) but we had a huge breakthrough on Saturday when she let ds stroke her for the first time ever since his arrival - he will be 4 in August! She is a total tart for men and much prefers dh to me but she's a gorgeous girly. My sister has a boy black cat, I suspect he is the beast of Sydenham on the quiet because he is huge but he's very placid and lovely. I always think black cats are just beautiful.

expatinscotland · 29/03/2005 15:33

I fell over laughing at that one myself, Pinot. And you should hear this cat! Touche, kitty, touche!

Snugs · 29/03/2005 17:17

Would love a black cat - just so that I can fit the witch stereotype a bit better - but instead have a pure white one.

Does make her a bit easier to find when she comes out on midnight walks in the pitch dark with me - although I did lose her once in a snow drift.

nutcracker · 29/03/2005 17:25

I love black cats, but the lady who did my home check was surprised too and said she didn't like them.

Have rung uo today about an all black cat that has just come in, am waiting to hear back.

To be honest, i couldn't care less what colour it is, so long as it gets on with the kids.

BubblesDeVere · 29/03/2005 17:31

Kizzie,

I have a jet black cat with the biggest green eyes you have ever seen and he is divine.

He is very very loving and cries like a baby on a morning until he has had his morning cuddle off me.

BubblesDeVere · 29/03/2005 17:33

NDP, i definately agree with what they say about a black cats fur, my cats is so shiny it looks greasy iykwim, but of course it isnt.

I also have a white tabby and though she is too in EXCELLENT condition, he fur doesn't look quite as healthy.

pixel · 29/03/2005 19:34

I haven't read all this but I think some people are reluctant to have black cats because they are worried that they will get run over easier (harder to see), not necessarily because they are superstitious. My sister has a gorgeous affectionate black cat which she got because she had been hit by a car and broken her leg. We also had a mostly black cat when we were kids who got run over so there is probably some logic in it.

expatinscotland · 29/03/2005 21:55

none of my cats are or have been outdoor cats so i don't worry about their getting run over.

blackies are lovely and if we had the space we'd love to have another black cat.

Biggs · 30/03/2005 15:20

We have a black cat who is gorgeous and very affectionate. About a year after we got her we decided to get another cat (black and white and equally gorgeous). Although our black cat was understandably a bit put out to begin with she soon accepted the newcomer to the extent that they are now the best of friends. They cuddle up together and clean each other - so cute!

Then go and do it, Socci! Don't forget your camera when the homecoming day arrives. I was able to do a brilliant scapbook for Danner. I had a small party after he settled in. My pals brought 'Baby Boy' cards over to congratulate the new arrival and gave gifts of toys and litter, etc. Then I scrapbooked the party!
