He shaved the cat!

So I have a gorgeous little Tortie cat who, bless her, somehow caught fleas. So I headed out to get some 'spot on' treatment and some flea shampoo so I could give her a wash and some fog sprays for the house so that my partner felt less stressed because he hates bugs. Anyway, when I came home there was cat fur everywhere. He's given her a full skin head cut. Now I understand and she looks cute bless her. To be fair the fleas have gone, she's an indoor cat so I'll keep her warm till it grows back but ever since I've noticed I feel like I have hay fever. Super itchy throat, eyes, ears, skin! Please tell me this is just crazy timing and it's not me somehow suddenly being allergic to my cat?

I’m sorry but that made me giggle. Can you post a picture of the cat? Just keep vacuuming the house and hopefully the hay fever goes away.

gamerchick · 12/07/2023 05:48

Trying to imagine how much skin I would have left if I tried that.

It might just be hayfever. People are suffering atm.

Talapia · 12/07/2023 06:03

That's cruel and should only have been done by a vet.
Sounds like you shouldn't have a cat.

Kimchikitchen · 12/07/2023 06:05

Very unlikely your flea problem has been solved

very very unlikely

soakinboakin · 12/07/2023 06:06

I agree it's cruel and not funny at all. Poor cat.

honeyandfizz · 12/07/2023 06:07

Poor cat.

UncleRadley · 12/07/2023 06:16

Your partner is very cruel, can you imagine how stressed the cat must have been. You need proper flea treatment from a vet.

Hillrunning · 12/07/2023 06:19

Disgusting behaviour. Stupid too, the fleas will still be in the house and likely on your cat.

Poxie · 12/07/2023 06:20

Gosh. Your cat must be very chilled out, to tolerate being shaved like that.

WilkinsonM · 12/07/2023 06:24

That's animal abuse, not cute

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 12/07/2023 06:29

That’s not cute that’s awful. Also dangerous their skin tears easily and needs stitching because it literally opens up like a zip.

He has a neck tattoo and drinks carling black label doesn’t he?

Justleaveitblankthen · 12/07/2023 06:29

This is the first cat thread in which I don't want to see a photo 😔

Lovehearts82 · 12/07/2023 06:30

Sounds like an extreme reaction from him. I never thought indoor cats could get fleas, but I've just googled and learnt something new.

SmirnoffIceIsNice · 12/07/2023 06:30

If this is true then I couldn't stay with a person who abused my cat in this way. I doubt the cat is totally bald (face etc) so there are probably some fleas remaining. Your poor cat is likely traumatised from the experience.

Todaypicard · 12/07/2023 06:33

For the flea issue specifically, the only thing that will work is veterinary strength treatment - so please make an appointment to be seen by the vet and get the treatment. Everything else is rubbish and is a waste of money

DogDream · 12/07/2023 06:34

You’re incredibly naive. Fur isn’t just there to keep them warm; amongst other things it protects them from overheating and UV rays. So now your cat is facing the warmest months of the year without the ability to keep themselves cool or protected from sunburn and skin cancer.

Your partner put his own immediate want in front of what was best for the health of that animal.

cryinglaughing · 12/07/2023 06:38

Who in their right mind would shave a cat?
It is an incredibly cruel thing to do, the cat was probably very stressed to have that done.

I would find that unforgivable, get rid of him and give your poor cat some tlc.

Azandme · 12/07/2023 06:40

He did what?!

Just no.

iloveeverykindofcat · 12/07/2023 06:40

That's horrible, the cat must have been terrified. I hope this isn't true.

TiredCatLady · 12/07/2023 06:41

WTAF have I just read?

What did he shave the poor thing with?! Clippers? A razor?! Cats don’t take well to being shaved usually (professional groomers have specific ways of calming them but even then - is he a professional groomer?) so how did he restrain her? Or did he follow her round the house hacking cuts off if you say there’s hair everywhere?

She’ll have been so distressed. If you can get near her, check for any nicks or cuts. And she will still need proper flea treatment.

Is he the same sort of person who would shave a child’s head if they got nits?

Poor cat.

Takoneko · 12/07/2023 06:54

He’s an idiot. Shaving the cat will not have solved your flea problem.

It’s also likely to be why you are now having an allergic reaction to your cat. It’s cat dander and skin oils that trigger allergic reactions in most people, not their fur/hair.

The fleas will just live in your soft furnishings and then jump onto your cat and you to bite and then jump back off again.

whirlyhead · 12/07/2023 06:58

I clip most of my cats weekly for health reasons and they are fine with it - this is done on vet recommendation. I do use proper pet clippers though! It won’t get rid of fleas so goodnesss knows what he was thinking. The fur will grow back quickly.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 12/07/2023 07:00

You buy the flea control in Home Bargains don’t you? Why did you buy shampoo? What’s that going to achieve? Are we still in 1980?

It’s all about your partner in your op, not about your cat having fleas biting it all over.

DogDream · 12/07/2023 07:28

Yes, all that dander is now loose and you’re likely reacting to it.

Newuser75 · 12/07/2023 07:44

It was a silly thing to do and to be honest I'm surprised he managed it by himself!

With regards to the fleas you need a veterinary strength product which are very effective. You will need one for the cat and one for the house.

If your cat goes outside you will have to keep him or her in until the fur grows back again as they will be very susceptible to sunburn without their fur.
