We are thinking of getting a puppy in the next few months. Dd has'nt had much to do with dogs and is a bit nervous of them, i was brought up around animals and would love a dog.

Which breeds are best around kids?

Any recomendations?

I dont like reals small dogs, would like a medium/large dog.

Morning guys, had to go to bed...

100x, was her name Terri? Her first name that is, not the kennel name?

Ingles, that picture on my profile still makes me laugh. Dd had to bring a picture of her family in to nursery last year. Not having a half decent one of the four of us, we did the usual naff thing - camera, tripod, time delay, dh running to join us on sofa etc. Dill thought this was a great game and launched himself onto the back of the sofa (no mean feat for a cocker sized cocker) just before the shutter went off. Hence why I look a bit startled....

Anyway, for all I know you guys have gone, never to return and I am now the only lonely person left in the room after the party has finished...

Better get the small people ready for school.

I have a 9 month old West Highland White Terrier, who is just smashing. I was a bit wary, what I'd heard about some terriers and growing up with the most timid cocker spaniel it has been my pleasure to live with, but he truly has such a lovely nature, we have been very fortunate.

He loves playing with the DCs, although he can be a bit nippy when excited but my kids are 12 and 8 so are old enough to understand not to wind him up too much whilst playing.

Westies are the perfect "footwell of car" size for travelling, although ours goes in his crate in the boot. Full of personality, easy to train, not too demanding walking/exercise but the best thing about him, he loves a cuddle at the end of the day in front of the telly with "his mam" .... me

I admit, when out walking with my westie and we meet a nice cocker spaniel, my heart does do a flip, but I've made my choice and wouldn't swap him for the world

Don't give in to the squeaking Marne. If you give an inch, she'll be asleep in your bed before you know what happened. Look at mine on my profile - on cold nights, despite his vast bulk, he seems to be able to sneak underneath the duvet un-noticed

Your profile isn't up Magnolia. I think you have had trouble with this before haven't you?

magnolia74 · 27/02/2008 09:28

oh god not again, maybe its the name change, will change back try now??

magnolia74 · 27/02/2008 09:30

Ok all done

Marne, do not give in!!!! I promise you will regret it. Has she got a crate? Teddy bear, radio on, something of yours that you have worn?

Marne · 27/02/2008 11:01

Lovely photo's magnolia, its hard to believe she will get that big (she's so tiny)

She has a crate, she goes mad if i shut her in there, she has a teddy, a bed, toys and chews. I will try the radio tonight and the vet told me to put a ticking clock near her as it sounds like her mums heart beat.

I have to leave her in a bit to go and get dd1 from nursery so she will have to go in her crate for an hour. At least i wont be here to hear her crying/barking.

I'm just worried that our neighbours will complain as she gets realy noisy when she howls and cry's.

She will get used to the crate, mine are 2 and 3 and I have trouble getting them out in the morning

The ticking clock is ok but if in bed with her as some people do she may chew it

Pop a note through the neighbours door explaining that new pup is settling in and a bit noisy, sure they will not find it a problem.

We have just got a staffy pup too,he us called Billy (pic in profile) and was born on 6th nov last year so is around 16 weeks .I got him last thursday and things are good so far although DS1 sneaked him up to bed on the first night and now he wont sleep downstairs apparently he was howling funny how I didnt hear him!!
SIL has got one too, he is 12 now and as mad as a hatter.

I have had a few dogs over the years -a retriever, doberman(when I lived at home),labrador, border collie, white GSD (my mum ended up with this after her dobi died, she is still going strong and is 12)and the last one we had was a weimeraner who sadly died 2 years ago aged 10.My last 3 were other peoples cast offs and they had a few problems but I have to say I did prefer older dogs to pups as you dont usually have to house train them ;0) Billy however was already house trained which is how we ended up with him!!

OOh I think I have come out of lurkdom and done my first ever post and I've been registered here for years blush

Viv xx

winestein · 28/02/2008 19:39

Welcome Viv!

Now you just need to switch on your profile so we can see Billy

viviennebell · 28/02/2008 20:57

onefootinthegravy · 29/02/2008 09:59

We've just got a puppy border terrier called Alfie. We got him on Tues he's 12 weeks old and I am in love!! He sleeps in his crate at night and after 2 noisy nights he went through last night. He's trained to go on newspaper already so we haven't had too many accdents so far. DD and I are in love with him and DH is jealous !!!

mummyof2bunnies · 27/03/2008 11:34

Hi just wanted to add i have a shar-pei and she is the most fantastic dog...my dd7 and her are inseperable she loves a good run around but loves to be lazy also..they can be quite stubborn to train but as long as you start them off right and train as pups you wont have any problems. To be honest i think all dogs behaviour depends on how you handle them. My bf has a brittish bulldog and she is fantastic with her 4 kids and very lazy quite a comical dog. My dps bf breeds staffies and they are the most loyal obedient dogs i have ever seen honestly.my dd fell and he sat by her and whined until we came to her rescue i have never seen anything like it. but i would say they are deffo nanny dogs and the females are for women and children but they can be a bit defensive of men but i thinks its just a maternal instinct, personally i would go for a male in a staffie if i was to have one.
PS my sis has a toy yorkie and she is the snappiest nervous wreck of a thing (well you would be at that size) but has bit me and my kids umpteen times!

Another vote for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. I like big dogs too, but we got a Cavvie because of their fabulous temperament around kids, seeing as how we were trying for a baby. Our vet says he's only ever known two bad-tempered ones in 40 years of practice. Obviously I'd never trust any dog unsupervised with a small child, but ours genuinely loves all litte kids - she finds them exciting and her tail goes like crazy whenever she encounters any. Uh, obviously the supervision is also so they don't treat her like a toy! Or her affection for ankle-biters might be less ardent.

mom2latinoboys · 31/03/2008 00:10

German short-haired pointer and he's wonderful with my 2.5 yo and 10 mo.

choxanwine · 31/03/2008 17:32

We have a golden retriever and know a few people with gr's. They are perfect dogs for children - very even tempered, tolerant, easy-going nature, fun-loving, gorgeous looking, very sociable, love being around people (including children)- in fact prefer people to dogs, but not very good guard dogs (at least in our experience)- too friendly! Make ideal pets.

JRocks · 31/03/2008 17:48

I have a weimeraner cross who is quite large, but oh so gentle with my 2.5 year old DS, even when he pulls his tail or pokes his face.
