We are thinking of getting a puppy in the next few months. Dd has'nt had much to do with dogs and is a bit nervous of them, i was brought up around animals and would love a dog.

Which breeds are best around kids?

Any recomendations?

I dont like reals small dogs, would like a medium/large dog.

Oooh but Marne a cocker spaniel is smaller than a Springer

Marne · 23/02/2008 18:19

What does an adult labradoodle look like? only seen a picture of a puppy (all puppies look cute)

Our neighbour has an evil jack russel.

We had a miserable and mean Jack Russell when growing up, along with lovely Labs. I'm not keen.

I don't know about Labrodoodles. I've only seen them in the park, but they look quite big you know. Easily as big as a springer.

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 23/02/2008 18:22

actually my nan hadd a growly jack russell

she had a couple of nightmare spaniels though

and a psycho cat

maybe it was ...

dp donwstairs feeding kids so will ask him advice on return (not interuupting this meal no way)

will get him to do a 1-10 best and 1-5 not best

lilymolly · 23/02/2008 18:22

its got to be a labrador every time. We have 4 year old lab and a 2 year old dd, We have just had a little of puppies and they all went to homes with children.
We have kept a puppy and she could not be more affectionate although a little boisterous.
We do live in the country and they get a lot of exercise, and I would not tolerate any naughtiness at all.
I have NEVER ever seen my lab show any signs of nastiness with children. In fact she loves them and given half a chance would play with them all day.

I would not have any other dog.

ahundredtimes · 23/02/2008 18:25

They would be too big for her by the sounds of it.

Look, how could you resist?

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 23/02/2008 18:26

i always want spaniels but dp says no
also says ears reek !

DualCycloneCod · 23/02/2008 18:26

apostrophe criem

ahundredtimes · 23/02/2008 18:29

Yes my dad said that too. I think you just need to clean their ears out, and watch the hairs.

Show strain are possibly more work to groom than working strain as they have longer coats.

I've had this puppy for five weeks. I'm an expert suddenly! I think I'm just a convert to spaniels because he isn't completely insane, and is so sociable and easy going. I'm used to more mentalist lab puppies.

PurplePillow · 23/02/2008 18:30

To be honest marne it's your choice what to get as long as you train it properly

I have a west highland terrier and most of that bread are quite yappy and nippy but mine would lick you to death

smartiejake · 23/02/2008 18:31

Jack Russels are very unpredictable IME and when they bite they don't let go! (Believe me I have been on the wrong end of a Jack Russel)

ahundredtimes · 23/02/2008 18:37

I shall stop pushing a cocker spaniel at you Marne. Except to say I was looking for a good family dog, medium-sized and one that wouldn't require a 7 mile walk every day.

And this dog did seem to fit the bill. They are the second most popular dogs in UK at present - after Lab, and for good reason I think.

I'd have liked a springer, but I think he'd have required more action than a cocker.

DualCycloneCod · 23/02/2008 18:38

kids

not kid's

sigh

BroccoliSpears · 23/02/2008 18:39

I agree with those who have said it isn't so much the breed that's important, it's how you interact with the dog, how much effort and energy you put into training it, socialising it, teaching your family how to interact with it, sticking to the rules etc.

Some dogs are typically more suited to family life than others, but there are exeptions with every breed. Get a dog if you are confident that you can be sure the dog will have its needs met, physically, practically and emotionally.

Probably don't get a St Bernard if you live in a tiny flat, or an Alsation if you are all couch potatoes, or a dachshund if your family go on 20 mile hikes every weekend...

We have labs and jack russels in my family because we think they're perfect family dogs for our family, and fit in with how we live.

ahundredtimes · 23/02/2008 18:39

LOL.

We are discussing DOGS woman. We can't be doing with apostrophe crimes, we're throwing sticks and handing out liver treats. It's hearty over here.

ahundredtimes · 23/02/2008 18:42

Oh no not a setter, aren't they a bit neurotic? Some of them on his list are TOO BIG Paula, she wants a medium-sized dog I thought? A hound. Like a cocker spaniel for instance.

ahundredtimes · 23/02/2008 18:42

He would loathe it. I can promise you, he would hate every second.

Says she who has a female thats bouncy and strong
