We are thinking of getting a puppy in the next few months. Dd has'nt had much to do with dogs and is a bit nervous of them, i was brought up around animals and would love a dog.

Which breeds are best around kids?

Any recomendations?

I dont like reals small dogs, would like a medium/large dog.

OOOH, I agree with Tortoise, a retired greyhound is fab

For some reason I was completely unaware of them when we got our dog, but our next dog will definately be a retired greyhound. They are so dignified and kind and gentle and generally swoonsome

pics of Mickey in my profile lol!
He is totally scrummy! And so lazy! Although he does love a good run up and down the garden with the DC!
he was from here

We have a bearded collie.

Fab with children. Need regular grooming although we send her to get trimmed every 2 months now so we don't need to brush her.

She looks like this but scruffier

twinsetandpearls · 23/02/2008 14:37

we have a springer and he is great with kids, endless patience with dd although they do need a lot of exercise and can be very destructive as puppies, alhtough I think most dogs are destructive as puppies.

twinsetandpearls · 23/02/2008 14:38

picture of our springer on my profile.

twinsetandpearls · 23/02/2008 14:39

I am going to sound like a mad dog person but springers are quite human, they are so expressive of their emotions. Ours is currently sulking as I won;t let him eat a whole packet of ginger nuts

noddyholder · 23/02/2008 14:41

tibetan terriers are lovely

Drusilla · 23/02/2008 14:42

Do you live in a town or the country? wE have a springer who is fantastic with children but they need a lot of exercise. And decent training as they are intelligent. A walk round the block on a lead twice a day will not be enough.

Drusilla · 23/02/2008 14:43

Crosspost with Twinset! I know exactly what you mean about springers and their emotions! I always expect mine to speak (mad woman emoticon)

flowerybeanbag · 23/02/2008 14:47

I have been compelled to put a piccie of doggiebeanbag putting on his puppy dog eyes under the Christmas tree, having seen everyone else's photos!

flowerybeanbag · 23/02/2008 14:47

On my profile, obviously..

tortoise had to have a look at Mickey - wow he's a handsome fellow

My cousin (13) has had a retired greyhound for a few years now and he's been a huge hit with everyone - has a lovely temperament apparently.

tortoise · 23/02/2008 15:07

Thanks kidoodle .

tortoise · 23/02/2008 15:07

skidoodle* The S was there!

QueenBhannae · 23/02/2008 17:54

We have a choc dilute shar pei and she has the most fabulous temperment. She is never alone with the children though as any dog can turn or at the very least attempt to hump the baby as my brothers lab did
She stands at 19inches so average for breed but is a nice medium size dog, very independent and protective/loving of the family.
I have been brought up with labs, alsations and my husband used to breed boston terriers(horrid yappy little things) and would reccommend the shar pei over all of them.

CountryGirl2007 · 23/02/2008 18:01

If you want a puppy, please consider adopting one from a pound or rescue. If you wait 6 months to buy one from a breeder, approx. 10,000 dog's will have been killed due to being homeless during that time, why not save one of them?

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 23/02/2008 18:05

dp says no to spaniels a bit snappy and unrelieble moods

he always says flat coat retriever

he also likes a lot of terriers and jack russell

if you tell me a dog i will ask him for a quick low down - he has words to say on most breeds

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 23/02/2008 18:07

greyhounds and whippets great with kids but 'dull' he says- sorry - i would still get one they are one of my fvaes

ahundredtimes · 23/02/2008 18:11

A spaniel is moody but a Jack Russell isn't? Surely not?

We have a Cocker Spaniel puppy - 15 weeks today. He is adorable - very gentle, quite intelligent but not going to win any awards, not too mad, sensitive, funny, very sociable and easy-going, quite submissive. Not aggressive at all - he is clearly not a guard dog. It's all wagging tails and 'HELLO EVERYONE' with this puppy.. His is v. v. good with all three dcs - as they are with him, I should add.

Cockers were recommended to me as a good family pet, good medium-sized dog and I can see why.

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 23/02/2008 18:13

spaniels can be snappy over excited i think ...jack russell is his favourite dog and he sees a lot...

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 23/02/2008 18:13

labradoodle another one he likes

ahundredtimes · 23/02/2008 18:14

Though not sure how old your dcs are? Dog breeder lady said to me she didn't really like to send a puppy to any family with a dc under 6. I think dcs DO need to be taught very carefully how to be with puppies - I suspect it might have been a different story here if any of mine were under six tbh.

Marne · 23/02/2008 18:15

I love springers, we live in the country but our house is a bit small for a springer.

I love greyhounds too but worried about it eating one of the neighbours cats (lots of cats on our road)

A staffy would be the perfect size (i think), i dont want a huge puppy thats going to knock the dd's over (dd1 is a bit unsure of dogs as it is)

Oh there are so many to choose from but a staffy is top of my list at the mo, just need to get dh to agree

Is it best to get a male or a bitch?

I'd not have Jack Russel with small children.

We had one and although i think he is just generally nuts, I also know someone else that had one at the same time and theirs is very snappy.

I ended up rehoming mine to my dad, who regularly rings me to ask me to please never give him anything else LOL.

ahundredtimes · 23/02/2008 18:17

Labradoodles are clever aren't they? And VERY spirited puppies.

Hmm. I shall report back on snappiness, I guess any dog can be probably do you think? This one isn't at present, but he might turn. He's just sociable and gregarious and oh he's just divine.

ALSO - to OP Cocker Spaniel is NOT a dog to get if you go out to work. They do need company I think.
