We are thinking of getting a puppy in the next few months. Dd has'nt had much to do with dogs and is a bit nervous of them, i was brought up around animals and would love a dog.

Which breeds are best around kids?

Any recomendations?

I dont like reals small dogs, would like a medium/large dog.

don't laugh..but I attach the hose to my kitchen mixer tap!

ahundredtimes · 24/02/2008 22:44

Oh he sounds a bit like mine hatwoman. Actually no, he's officially a blue roan mine. He looks very like the picture of the dog I linked to further down, except he's a puppy, so therefore smaller and sillier version.

Oh I can't be doing with that Ingles! I don't have a hose long enough. Can't I put him in the bath upstairs? Is it a stupid thing to do?

ingles2 · 24/02/2008 22:44

I don't think I'd try the bathroom, she shakes a lot! (the water off I mean)

ingles2 · 24/02/2008 22:45

how about trying a couple of buckets of warm water outside with a towel nearby?

ingles2 · 24/02/2008 22:47

Thank you hatwoman btw..

ahundredtimes · 24/02/2008 22:49

Okay. Okay. I'll do that.

[nervous]

Crikey. This could be a me and three children job I think. How often do you wash P? She looks like she probably has a shower every morning. She's just so clean looking. Aren't her ears nice?

I am eyeing up Johnny Jet now who is asleep at my feet. He is a messy rascal.

ingles2 · 24/02/2008 22:52

she doesn't normally look as nice as that...she's normally walking around with bits of twig stuck to her ears
I leave it until she stinks!!!
About 1 every 6 weeks.. beware fox poo!
and I 'm sure jonny jet is gorgeous, they are so cheeky looking when they're little. are you going to post a pic?

hatwoman · 24/02/2008 22:52

when I was going back to university at the beginning of term and we were packing up the car Thomas (who would not be coming along for the ride) used to get in the car and refuse to get out. he knew exactly what he was doing.

the story about spitting stones made me smile too. Thomas used to hate travel sickness tablets. he would pretend to have swallowed them and keep them in his mouth for a good 15 minutes and then spit them out. god he was brilliant. willful, cheeky, sometimes mad but the most charming, funny, and loving dog I've ever known.

ingles2 · 24/02/2008 22:55

Bless, Hatwoman
I know I'm serously biased but I think CS are the most fantastic family dogs, they have got such big personalities, but are so loving....

hippipotami · 24/02/2008 22:57

hundred - I put daftDill in the bath upstairs and wash him with lukewarm water (spoiled dog emoticon)
we use a dog shampoo from the petshop called 'crazy dog'. Smells divine (I have the babypowder version )

DaftDill does get clippered. He never ever got the sleek cocker coat I so desired. Right from a pup he was regularly brushed, and then handstripped once it needed doing, but he always looked like he was made from brown candyfloss.
And seeing as we visit the woods or canal towpath almost daily, and he has a love of swimming, and picked up twigs, leaves and discarded chewing gum in his candyfloss, we now have him clippered every 4 months. True Cocker enthusiasts will burn me at the stake, but for Dill it is best. (and when his coat is short it is the only time he is sleek and shiny)

Other than that, fab fab dogs, mad as a box of frogs, but extremely sociable, extremely loving and just great great fun.

we're contemplating getting a dog in the not too distant future and I know dh will want a lab. lovely and reliable as they are, in comparison to a cocker they're, tbh, boring. dh thinks cockers are too small and mad. I'll have to get to work on him...

hippipotami · 24/02/2008 23:00

Oh, forgot to say, Dill is a solid colour. He is chocolate brown (official colour liver I guess...) and just the most divine hairy thing ever. The 'mean streak' which used to be prevalent in solid colour cockers is definately being bred out, but apparently it does still pop up once a while, hence my boring litany about finding a reputable breeder

ahundredtimes · 24/02/2008 23:01

See how we all like Cockers. I think we should have our own thread.

Okay. Johnny Jet's mother and father (I saw a picture of his father, the mad breeder wanted me to take it with me I said really, I didn't need it) both had long straight slinky coats. We'll see how his turns out.

Right. A wash is in order for next week then. I'm quite pleased somebody does it in the bath, at least you can keep them in there? I shall report back.

When does their coat start to grow long, long then?

ingles2 · 24/02/2008 23:02

ROFL... just looked at your profile Hippi and your mad dog pic sums up CS I think,..brilliant!

ingles2 · 24/02/2008 23:04

get a cs hatwoman..! tell your dh that labs are a nightmare with food.. (CS can be too, but ssshhh!)

ahundredtimes · 24/02/2008 23:04

LOL that is so true Ingles. I can imagine mine trying to get in a photo too, insisting actually that he be part of the family group.

ingles2 · 24/02/2008 23:05

um,..long time ago now, but about 8 / 9 months I think..

ahundredtimes · 24/02/2008 23:05

Oh Labs are nice too aren't they. But god they are mental as puppies and they are puppies for such a long time.

hatwoman · 24/02/2008 23:05

you can;t get passionate about labs in the same way...

hippipotami · 24/02/2008 23:07

at your breeder, mine emailed me pictures of Dill's mum's pregnant belly weekly to show me how it was growing
She was clearly insane, but all her dogs lived in the house with her and some even slept on her bed. The entire house was filled with CS ornaments and pictures. Crazy, completely crazy, but somewhat endearing too

Can't remember how long it took for Dill's coat to grow to the stage it needed 'dealing with' but it was a good 8 months or so.

And now (Dill is 2.8) it is every 3 to 4 months depending on how long I let it get before he collects the entire woodland floor in his coat. When wild hares and the odd hedgehog escape his coat after a walk I tend to phone the groomer for an appointment.

hatwoman · 24/02/2008 23:10

he grew up with labs. including one who ate a pound of lard, one that ate a pound of sugar, and several that ate untold amounts of fox shit...

ahundredtimes · 24/02/2008 23:10

No, I think you're right. And there is no great advantage is having a big dog really I don't think. I do like Labs but they are a bit dull and trustworthy. And besides, they just don't have the floppy ears. Spaniel's do seem to be very happy dogs, all that tail wagging and bum moving and general joie de vie.

Come join the spaniel appreciation society.

ingles2 · 24/02/2008 23:11

now it's just us, before anyone tells me off..
last week when pippa was at this photo shoot there was also a standard poodle, chiuauauaauaua (sp?) a choc lab, a labradoodle and a little terrier x. I wasn't sure how P was going to be as she is not used to new people really, we live in an isolated house. Anyway, she was easily the best behaved. really laid back and friendly to everyone and all the dogs. The poodle and the lab went NUTS!

ahundredtimes · 24/02/2008 23:12

Oh god H she sounds JUST LIKE MINE. Perhaps it was the same one? You couldn't move for the ornaments and the things. She had ELEVEN dogs in her house.

ahundredtimes · 24/02/2008 23:14

Yes, two labradoodles in the park - puppies - absolutely insane. Their owners always look a bit hassled and nervous.

I have enjoyed this chat. I am going now to look at the red carpet dresses for the Oscars for I am a dog owning dress slut.
