Kittens eating anything and everything 🤦‍♀️

I’ve never had or wanted cats, DH loves them so I’ve succumbed and I’m so glad I did, I absolutely love our little kittens, 3 months old. Even though I didn’t know anything about cats, I thought they basically ate kitty/cat food, however not the case with our two!

They will eat absolutely anything, you cannot leave one crumb on the work top, they’re up there, I dropped beetroot the other day on the kitchen floor, they ate it, I walked three steps from a piece of toast to put the butter back in the fridge and they were up there licking my toast, they climbed into their food box, took their dreamies out, ripped open the packets and ate them.

I accidentally left the fridge open the other day one of them jumped in, dragged out a piece of steak wrapped in tinfoil and they ate most of it.

We have to lock everything away … is this normal, please tell me they will grow out of it.

pics attached of what we are dealing with and of the culprits 🤦‍♀️😂

😆

Totally normal!

Some cats are bigger thieves than others but kittens, like children are up for exploring everything.

You can train them to keep off the countertops.

What are you feeding them? If they're hungry or unsatisfied with their meals this behaviour will be more pronounced.

I bet the litter tray was interesting after beetroot day!

QueenSmartypants · 17/01/2023 22:16

...I have to lock all food away otherwise my cat will break into it. Dreamless especially.

Queenofheart · 17/01/2023 22:18

They get fed really well, I kid you not they can have just been fed and they scream and beg whilst I’m cooking, greedy little little sods 🤦‍♀️

glad it’s not just mine then 😂

Ah, but what are you feeding them?

Big difference between cat foods.

I’d be interested to know how to train them to keep off the counters, I clap, shout a word, shoo them, nothing works?

Consistency is key.

Safe methods for disciplining if what you've tried still isn't working is to scruff them, hiss, or use a water spray.

But consistency everytime.

We feed them royal canin, supposedly premium and good for kittens apparently, plus they get good treats sometimes

Oh a water spray is a good one, tried the rest too, I will invest in a small water spray 👍🏻

Sorry mn formatting nightmare...was going to say you need to physically pick them up and put them on the floor.

Then cla p,shout, spray when you go in and see them up there. They should start to jump down when they see you with a caught-in-the-act look.

Also, I'd keep them out of the kitchen while you're preparing food.

How could you accuse such innocent faces? A big cat did it and ran away. Grin.

Mine is mostly not fussed, but has nicked cake, prawns and roast pork so far. She is classy through, will ask semi politely (apart from the cake)

Just dry food?

If so, try introducing a wet food as well.

QueenSmartypants · 17/01/2023 22:24

They are totally gorgeous!

Thesonglastslonger · 17/01/2023 22:24

🤣
They’re babies
My son used to eat books 🤣
They’ll probably grow out of it

Flick a few drops of water on them whenever they jump on the counter and hopefully they’ll stop (although they may just learn to only do it when you’re not looking, cats are tricky like that).

sophs29 · 17/01/2023 22:25

Nothing helpful to add other than they are absolutely adorable and I'm so glad they've won you round..even if they are eating all of your food 😂😂

RandomMess · 17/01/2023 22:26

It just b depends on your cats, previous ones not interested in human food. Current boys are completely the opposite and it's a constant case of shitting them out.

Kitten has been retrieved out the bin, fridge, drawer, trip the vets already after he shoved a sultana down his throat in seconds he's just obsessed.

He gets top quality raw fed.

F4chrissakes · 17/01/2023 22:32

Put everything away and/or cover it. Including butter. Flick water /squirt with a water pistol over them when they do jump up, bonus points for doing this without them realising it's you. Sometimes the little devils rumble that you don't want them on the worktop, but jump up once your back is turned. If so, you could try putting aluminium foil across the worktops, or something else that they don't like to walk on.

It’s a hard one 😂

I wouldn’t mind if they asked, they steal and run 😂

I love them! Kittens are hilarious! You need to be filming their antics for the future. You'll miss even the driving-you-up-the-wall ones when they're sedate gentlemen!

weve started doing that, literally everything is away or in boxes, can’t cover, foil or cling wrap as they undo it 🤷‍♀️

I’ve never been a fan of cats, took DH a while to convince me to have one then he came home with two, “he was the last in the litter, I couldn’t leave him” and now I’m smitten, love them 🥰

Agree.
Cats get something like 80% of their hydration from food so they do better, I feel, with some wet food.
It might also be why they are trying to eat everything else they come across.

Water trick is definitely the way forward now!

I’ve got a cat like that - he steals anything and everything including boiled potatoes, apple crumble and washing up sponges. We’ve learnt to put everything away and use the microwave as a cat proof box for eg defrosting food. It’s actually quite funny to watch him do it as he literally face plants into food as the quickest way to get it. His brother tends to investigate it first and so usually gets caught before he’s got a mouthful.
