Kittens eating anything and everything 🤦‍♀️

I’ve never had or wanted cats, DH loves them so I’ve succumbed and I’m so glad I did, I absolutely love our little kittens, 3 months old. Even though I didn’t know anything about cats, I thought they basically ate kitty/cat food, however not the case with our two!

They will eat absolutely anything, you cannot leave one crumb on the work top, they’re up there, I dropped beetroot the other day on the kitchen floor, they ate it, I walked three steps from a piece of toast to put the butter back in the fridge and they were up there licking my toast, they climbed into their food box, took their dreamies out, ripped open the packets and ate them.

I accidentally left the fridge open the other day one of them jumped in, dragged out a piece of steak wrapped in tinfoil and they ate most of it.

We have to lock everything away … is this normal, please tell me they will grow out of it.

pics attached of what we are dealing with and of the culprits 🤦‍♀️😂

That’s so cute.

i didn’t know my cat was an opportunist food thief. Until I caught her red handed licking the icing off my birthday cake.

😂 I love these stories. I had one that even as an adult went nuts for cake. Another for cheese. I had to watch them like a hawk - the one who liked cake would steal it from your hand if you weren't continuously watching it as you ate.

Quisquam · 18/01/2023 11:00

Ours had food anxiety for quite a while - born feral. They used to eat anything. We had to lock all food away. The Tom even opened the bread bin and chewed up a whole white sliced loaf one night! It wore off eventually, although they will still go for our meat, cheese, cooked eggs, butter and milk, if they can. The vet said, cats will go for fat!

mathanxiety · 18/01/2023 20:48

Just an aside - it's best to start doing claw trimming and ear cleaning while they're still kittens so they'll get used to you handling them. It's hard to get an older cat to learn to be calm and allow this grooming.

gogohmm · 18/01/2023 20:59

Pet corrector spray, basically makes a noise they don't like. Worked a treat with ddog but it says cats as well on the can

I've never trimmed a cat's claws or cleaned their ears in my life? Is that a thing now?

OP I'd definitely look at grain free food, cats are carnivores and most commercial cat food, even the expensive stuff vets are paid to promote, is full of wheat and sugar filler. It's not good for them.

Just push them off, don't interact. Sweep of the arm (gently).

This has worked on every cat I have owned or fostered, until my latest - I had to lock the kitchen door!

Anyway I don't believe you. Those two sweet little faces could never steal food.

Never, it's impossible.

Push the off all the time, bloody ignorant they are … i agree though sweet faces, I’m such a pushover 😭

Me and hubby do their nails, they’re not keen but we can do it between us. What’s the thing with ear cleaning , not heard of that?

Oh that’s Interesting thank you @ChildminderMum
we cut their claws regularly otherwise they will claw your furniture

I’ve just googled this, do you spray it when they jump up?

I've had cats who would eat anything in sight and cats who never touched anything. I've never managed to train a cat. My current feline is a huge food thief who will open packages and given a couple of days will work out the mechanism on any bin or failing that break it. Our bin has to have something very heavy kept on top at all times. The only thing we managed to do was stop him reaching up and swiping things off our plates while were eating (the git is huge so can stretch up to the table easily) he now waits until we put cutlery down then leaps on to the table to lock the plates.

In short, he's a massive pain the bum, git, sod, scumbag and whatever else you care to name him. But he's very fluffy and purrs a lot and demands to sleep on my lap so obviously I adore him.

Oh god here’s me thinking they’d get better as they grew, 🤦‍♀️ I agree, they are so loving and cuddle up all the time that I forgive them 🥰

I had one that used to steal my vindaloo curry and bright purple black cherry yoghurt. Another that liked scones.

onionringcheeseypuff · 18/01/2023 22:52

I've currently got my first cat ever that is not good motivated at all...but is still chewing everything! My dh's work boots yesterday 😂

As everyone says the fluffy benefits outweighs the nibbly cons

I have only had beef to trim one cats nails, a very elderly cat we had with arthritis who could not wear them down and would struggle to walk

In general, cats don't need their nails done if healthy and given opportunity to scratch safe items

Like curtains and ankles 😂

I’ve had cats all my life and not once have their claws been trimmed/ cut, or their ears cleaned! We have cat scratching posts/ boxes around the house and they’ve never clawed furniture. They have been to the vets regularly for health checks/ vaccinations and not once has it been mentioned - I’m pretty sure it’s not a thing (in the UK at least).

Gorgeous kittens by the way.

asparalite · 18/01/2023 23:03

This kitten food would be better for them, higher meat content,

“Vets are paid to promote” Really?

Beamur · 18/01/2023 23:36

My cats were next level naughty and ill mannered as kittens. They would invade the dinner table and try and take foods off plates, all over the worktops, fiends for carbs! Holes chewed in wraps or loaves left out, butter licked...
They're three now and are mostly quite civilised.

OK, it's not quite as simple as that Grin but Mars, Nestle, Colgate put huge amounts of money and effort in to getting vets to promote their products, even funding nutrition research and vet departments at universities, providing 'nutrition training', sending reps to vet practices and giving them a cut of sales. That's why vets always promote Hills Science diet and Royal Canin despite the ingredients not being great quality.
Nestle use the same tactics to get midwives to promote formula too in countries where it is less regulated.

Ah, Ok! Good to know. Have you got a background in pet nutrition then?

mathanxiety · 19/01/2023 00:29

If your cat ever gets ear mites you will need to be able to poke around in her ears with a soaked cotton ball to clean them, and to squirt ear mite killer drops in. You want a cat who will let you do that. Or who will let a vet do that. I had to administer gabapentin to my cat to relax her a bit in order to get this done. It still took the vet plus three assistants to get her ears partially cleaned out and meds in.

007DoubleOSeven · 19/01/2023 01:04

My cat adores having her ears cleaned. The deeper the better. She goes totally, totally limp.
