Kittens eating anything and everything 🤦‍♀️

I’ve never had or wanted cats, DH loves them so I’ve succumbed and I’m so glad I did, I absolutely love our little kittens, 3 months old. Even though I didn’t know anything about cats, I thought they basically ate kitty/cat food, however not the case with our two!

They will eat absolutely anything, you cannot leave one crumb on the work top, they’re up there, I dropped beetroot the other day on the kitchen floor, they ate it, I walked three steps from a piece of toast to put the butter back in the fridge and they were up there licking my toast, they climbed into their food box, took their dreamies out, ripped open the packets and ate them.

I accidentally left the fridge open the other day one of them jumped in, dragged out a piece of steak wrapped in tinfoil and they ate most of it.

We have to lock everything away … is this normal, please tell me they will grow out of it.

pics attached of what we are dealing with and of the culprits 🤦‍♀️😂

Gorgeous kitties! I have never been able to keep mine off the counter, despite my best intentions. I gave up in the end and just make sure to clean things extra thoroughly. My girl cat grew out of her interest in human food over time. Boy cat will still sprint from wherever he is if he hears the butter opening - his favourite! Enjoy them!

Just dry food?

If so, try introducing a wet food as well.

Yes just dry as when we give them wet food they have the runs, maybe not giving them the right wet food, will ask the vet.

Haha that’s these two, as soon as they hear the fridge opening you can hear their jingly collars running to the kitchen … oh god I’m going to try the water trick then locking them out whilst cooking if that doesn’t work

Try food with a high meat content if you’re able to - like Katkin, Blink or Cool Cat Club. Pricey, so not possible for everyone but does make a difference in the litter tray.

Agreed, but equally you don't have to go to the highest ranged ones to find a wet food that works.

Also when introducing new food, do it gradually, a teaspoon here and there as they're still small. Cats tummies can take time to adjust to new food, even if its really good stuff.

Definitely ask the vet.

My two are now one and they still jump up. Water sprays never worked, they just got soaked! They did improve once they started going outside and think it was partly boredom. We still have to put all washing up that won't fit in the dishwasher on top of the fridge freezer as it's the only place they can't get to. They will lick all the plates otherwise! I can't even nip to the toilet while cooking as they'll be right in there (open plan so can't shut them out!)

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 17/01/2023 22:51

Our cats used to break into the fridge and help themselves to anything inside. They broke their way through three child locks on the fridge to get in there. We currently have to buy tinned cat food as cardboard boxes of food or pouches (inside a cardboard box) are not match for them, they’ll be in there, quick sharp.

They are sly and will wait. For example, sneak into a cupboard and hide in the back silently for hours at a time until you leave so they can access the food in the closed cupboard.

They are smart, devious, and I am just thankful I am not a mouse.

Unforgettablefire · 17/01/2023 22:52

Those sweet little faces they're gorgeous.
Op they get more crafty as they get older you'll forever be on your toes Grin
I remember having to ring Morrisons once to ask what the absorbent paper stuff in the bottom of meat trays contained. My dog and cat had gotten into the fridge, stole and ate a joint of beef including the paper stuff at the bottom. They even got the string off.

That is next level!

I’ve had kittens before but the 2 we have now 5 months old have been like vultures ever since we got them, they eat more than my 10year old cat. Dry food they don’t bother with so they have 3 tins a day of cat food between them yet have bitten through bread/barm wrappers and nibbled them, mince pies, sausage rolls anything they can get they will, they are like starving vultures I’ve never know cats like these

mathanxiety · 18/01/2023 02:11

Keep a little spray bottle handy to spray some water on them if they hop up onto the counter.

Omg that is seriously sneaky, thankfully mine aren’t at that level 🤦‍♀️

Oh good tip thanks, they’re ok with water drinking, mainly because they’re eating so much of our bread 🤦‍♀️ But I get you with wet food 👍🏻

They are adorable, I have a wee grey cat as well. 😻
I feed her Blink pouches which I would recommend, (along with dry food which she grazes on), they are not particularly cheap though but good quality.

RandomMess · 18/01/2023 06:46

Have to say our little has bagels as one of his favourites, I came in with the food shopping and his mouth was attached to them with his body hanging out the bag 🙀

He stole sausage the other day, whilst he was a scruffed having it removed he again used his paw to shove it down his throat. I have never seen anything quite like it.

Bestcatmum · 18/01/2023 06:51

They do grow out of it. My latest kitten would fight me for my vegetarian dinner. What cat likes quorn and ratatouille? The one before would eat a whole corn on the cob. Once they grew up they weren't interested at all.

declutteringonedayatatime · 18/01/2023 07:35

My sister-in-law was catsitting once and she took muffins out of the freezer to defrost.

She came down in the morning to find muffin crumbs and one happy cat 🤣

I’d be interested to know how to train them to keep off the counters, I clap, shout a word, shoo them, nothing works?

Just push them off, don't interact. Sweep of the arm (gently).

This has worked on every cat I have owned or fostered, until my latest - I had to lock the kitchen door!

Anyway I don't believe you. Those two sweet little faces could never steal food.

Never, it's impossible.

RandomMess · 18/01/2023 10:21

Yes one of my cats can open doors 🙀 the kitchen door now has the door handle on upside down and she hasn't worked it out yet!

nocoolnamesleft · 18/01/2023 10:26

They look very innocent.
