Found our lost cat, but is acting strange. Urgent

I don't know why to do, we just found our lost cat today and he was outside for 3 days but after i gave him a bath he seemed very limp and wouldn't move at times. He won't eat or drink willingly and won't fight me when trying to pet him. He's probably in shock but I don't know and it's very worrying. We don't have money to take him to the vet but we will if we have too. He's shaking like crazy and wont let me pick him up and he's currently hiding under my bed for bout 4 hours. Please help.

OP might not return to update given the angry posts saying she was cruel for making her cat wait.

No, OP may not return due to her own guilt.

RunningOutOfCharge · 07/02/2018 09:34

I think the cat has most likely been pts

Sad

retirednow · 07/02/2018 11:54

Running, i think you are right, poor little soul. I expect they will ask to have thread deleted too.Sad

lucylouuu · 07/02/2018 12:43

doubt OP will come back due to nastiness on this thread! If she couldn't get a lift for 2 hours that's that, why question why she has to wait 2 hours? She didn't do anything wrong, yes maybe shouldn't have bathed it but she took the cat to the vet

RunningOutOfCharge · 07/02/2018 12:48

Did she though?

georgeoutside · 07/02/2018 12:58

doubt OP will come back due to nastiness on this thread

Oh come on!

The only nastiness on this thread is the OP themselves who decided to give their obviously injured cat a bloody bath instead of taking them to the vet.

purplelass · 07/02/2018 13:11

I just want to know how the poor cat is... hopefully she'll tell the vet she bathed it and they'll let her know whether that was the right decision. Not something I'd have done in the circumstances, poor puss :(

Pidlan · 07/02/2018 13:18

Jesus. What a reaction. If I thought my cat was starving and knackered after 3 days in the wild, I'd expect it to behave oddly- I might not pick up the signs that there's something seriously wrong straight away. If it was filthy and possibly uncomfortable with being caked in mud, I might give it a warm bath and wrap it up. Stop being so judgmental.

Scabbersley · 07/02/2018 13:20

Yeah I agree. This thread is really nasty

georgeoutside · 07/02/2018 13:22

Stop being so judgmental.

I think this is one of those threads where being judgmental is actually entirely appropriate.

People need to know it is not ok to treat animals like this.

It's not people being nasty, just damn honest. The cat needed a vet.

Valerrie · 07/02/2018 13:26

Stop being so judgmental

No.

HTH.

Pidlan · 07/02/2018 13:31

Yes, the cat needed a vet. Maybe that wasn't immediately obvious to the OP, as all the symptoms seem to have come after she cleaned him up. Maybe she thinks these are symptoms of shock and/or hunger.

georgeoutside · 07/02/2018 13:39

pidlan I'm guessing you missed the bit where the cat was hiding under the bed for 4 hours? Then over an hour later OP said it would be at least 2 hours before the cat could go to the vet?

So that's 7 hours, 8 if you take into consideration finding and bathing the cat.

That is neglect. There is no other way to describe it. Not to mention we do t even know if the OP actually did in fact take the cat.

Defending the OP is a losing battle. Animal cruelty is not something that is acceptable.

Topseyt · 07/02/2018 13:47

Pidlan, she says that the cat was walking oddly and huffing when breathing. Those are potentially indicators of very serious injuries, and vet's advice is needed before anything else should happen.

I am aware of this because I have recently had to have my beloved cat put to sleep because of a creeping spinal condition (old age, not injury- he was almost 17) which caused him to finally lose control of his lower half during the night of Christmas Eve and the very early hours of Christmas morning.

I spent my Christmas morning at the out of hours vet with him, having taken the earliest appointment I could get. The symptoms he had were sort of similar to what the OP described although he didn't seem to be in pain and had not been outside. In the meantime I took advice over the phone, kept him as still as possible on a cushion on the floor until it was time to go. That was what alarmed me when she talked about bathing him.

I don't for a moment think that the OP's intentions were anything other than good. Nor do I think she is a cruel person.

I suspect that I reacted more harshly than I should have done, and for that I apologise. It is still quite raw with me, having lost my old boy in that way.

I hope OP's cat is able to pull through. Whatever the outcome, I do actually have some sympathy.

Pidlan · 07/02/2018 14:01

Very sorry about your cat Topseyt Flowers

Topseyt · 07/02/2018 14:54

Thanks Pidlan. It really was just old age apparently causing his spine to give up on him.

Symptoms such as developing a slow and creaky looking gait intermittently were also occasionally present, though not always and he just seemed old and frail. So the odd walk was what alarmed me about OP's cat.

We are always second guessing another animal, as they can't talk. Cats (and dogs too) can be stoical creatures and hide some quite serious conditions for quite some time. That means we can misinterpret or miss things. I include myself there.

retirednow · 07/02/2018 15:21

It would be lovely if op got back to us to say kitty is okay, the thing that is frustrating is when people ask for urgent advice then ignore it. It seemed obvious the cat was distressed and I think most people would have kept it warm, dry, quiet and called the vet, not start an online discussion about it. I am sad because it may have struggled to find it's way home and the mud could have been cleaned off with a warm flannel, not a bath which most cats hate anyway.

SuburbanRhonda · 07/02/2018 17:59

I’m frustrated because the OP seems to be completely clueless about how to care for a cat, and didn’t even understand that they have to be given medical care by law, even if you can’t afford it.

And if you can’t afford it, don’t get a fucking pet.

Kenworthington · 07/02/2018 18:20

Oh I’ve been hoping for an update. I’ve been thinking about ops poor cat all day

Any news OP? Good or bad.

Harles · 08/02/2018 01:36

Sorry guys, I just got him back from the vet, he had to stay the night, he had a broken sternum, a bruised lung, mild dehydration, an eye infection, and a couple puncture wounds. They said that he's okay and he's doing good. Sorry for all the fuss.

Harles · 08/02/2018 01:45

And for everyone saying I was neglecting the cat I wasn't. I didn't know if he was hurt or not until I gave him a warm bath. AND the vet said that it was a good decision. So I'm not a bad cat owner and yea I didn't have the money at the time because I knew it was gonna be over what I can afford. And I started this thread because I wasn't sure how cats acted after they ran away and came back. I wanted to know if anything was nothing worry over or I was being overly dramatic. Plus I was panicking. But everything is now taken care of. He's alive and while and I love and spoil my cat so much I wouldn't even think about neglecting him
