My cat seems to drinking a load of water..

im going to take him to the vet, but I just wondered if anyone had any ideas.
Its been for the past month or so, hes been in the loo drinking water, pestering the kids to get at thier drinks...any ideas? He has water in a bowl BTW...but seems to enjoy leaving muddy footprints in the loo

I don't want to alarm you but I do know that animals also get diabetes so that's something to eliminate.

How old is he? I think it isn't a great sign if it's an older cat. Have you changed his diet? I give mine more iams than i used to and one of them definitely drinks more than he used to. The other one has always lived in the bath waiting for someone to turn the tap on for him!

i don't want to alarm you either, but my cat was drinking loads when he had a blocked urethra. it is quite common in male cats, their urine isn't acidic enough sometimes and they get crystals forming, it is made worse if they are on a dry diet.
try feeling where is bladder is, if it feels uncomfortable for him when you press, or it feels really full and bloated, I would get him to the vets straight away.
Also try and see (if possible) where he's weeing, to see if their any blood in it.

If your cat is older than 10 it would be worth while taking him to the vets. My cat started drinking alot more and eating less and it turns out that she has mild kidney disease which is most likely to happen when they get above this age.

Our elderly cat drank a lot more when he developed kidney problems, but he managed well with some medication.
How old is your cat, charliecat?

foolish methinks. His birthday was in Jan. It's taken me this long to get round to organising it. Thought (hoped) it would be forgotton about. Silly me. They has a great time. Dh and I knackered. Finally all asleep at 2.30am. Up again at 7am. All gone now, thank God.

Charlie is he alright in himself? If he was diabetic you'd probably notice a weight loss, although that said it can come on suddenly. Good luck with the vet on Monday.

He became irritating. I cant quite put my finger on it but he used to be a littertray free cat, but he goes out so little now he needs a litter tray. And he occasionaly pees or poos somewhere if they trays not around for a couple of hours...before he would hold it in and would never wee or poo anywhere.
Hes got skinny recently, but we have swopped from sachets to 1 tin a day and biscuits.
And when I asked on MN thats a huge amount of food compared to other moggys.
Will elt you know how it goes.
I think it could be diabetes, the amount of water hes getting thru.

Charlie they'd want to test his wee. I guess that's going to be pretty impossible. They'll have to do a blood test. Cats also do this when they get old. I kow a couple of cats who've got really thin and just peed wherever they fancied towards the end. But yours isn't very old so who knows?

Charlie, if it is diabetes or kidney disease or a bladder problem it ain't going to be cheap! My sister's cat has a recurring blocked urethra, like Mabel's, and has needed surgery, I think (some procedure involving an overnight stay, anyway) a couple of times, costing several hundred pounds. My mother's cat has kidney and thyroid disease and has cost £1,000 in the past six months... here's hoping your boy has something cheaper and gets better soon.

(Mine has eczema which is cheap but sadly hard to treat.)

The damage is...diabetes..hes going in tommorow to stabalise him (90 quid) and then 25 a month after that. Bloody cat l o l....need to read the leaflet then start to worry. Poor pussy. Got to get myself handy with a needle now...

Aww so sorry charliecat.
It's hard enough injecting my ds who I can at least explain to why I'm doing it. I don't know how you're going to do it with a cat.

Will do. I cringe when the VET does the jabbing, so this is going to be a challenge.
Have they invented non needle injections for kids yet? Or was that a sci-fi prog i was watching?
