I think we might get a dog. Is there ANY alternative to a labrador?

I'd prefer something smaller

but it has to be 100% kidproof, clever and active, preferably with no hair at all or low shedding...

I would recommend Sussex spaniel, Welsh springer, corgi, basenji or Munsterlander. Knackers to the no-hair thing, it's a bloody dog; hair, farts & slobber come as standard.

Personally I'd avoid border collies (too much work required) and terriers & spitz' (PITA to train) and anything that would make MNers foam at the mouth.

Several reputable dog rescue centres would not give us a dog because we were planning to have children.

PrincessPeaHead · 22/01/2007 13:34

you'd recommend a CORGI? the worlds most bitey vicious little dog? are you NUTS?!! Princess Anne is forever trying to avoid her corgis being put down for biting the arse of valets etc....

MamaG · 22/01/2007 13:36

oh just get a bloody labrador woman. Can't beat them, sorry

McDreamy · 22/01/2007 13:38

We have a labrador and although he is a beautiful dog and lovely with the children he sheds lots of hair and when his coat gets wet it stinks!

preggerspoppet · 22/01/2007 16:51

will some really nice person please tell me how to link a photo from the shared photos page so I can show a picture of my pooch... pleeeeeeaaassseeeeeee?

humour me?

I just got all offended at people not liking the sound on my dog, a bit like someone slagging off your baby.... utterly rediculous, I know, but you just gotta see her liddle face!

ScummyMummy · 22/01/2007 16:55

I want one of those bat earred bulldogs.

ScummyMummy · 22/01/2007 16:58

Like this one

preggerspoppet · 22/01/2007 17:03

was he in a kids film recently? was it garfield or something? (thought it was going to be the bat btw)

ScummyMummy · 22/01/2007 17:10

Not sure, preggerspoppet- googled for the picture. Have avoided Garfield the movie like the plague!

SecondhandRose · 22/01/2007 17:13

So can we have a list of dogs that don't shed please. We are all a bit allergice.
So it's

poodles
border collies

pointydog · 22/01/2007 17:23

stick with that list, cross out poodle ('cause them is ugly) and there you have it. The perfect list.

preggerspoppet · 22/01/2007 17:28

I know I'm on my own here, but the trouble is you lot are all just plain ignorant to the sheer beauty and superiority of the whippet cross jack russell.

humph.

preggerspoppet · 22/01/2007 17:30

poodles
border collies
whippet cross jack russell

(the not-sheding list)

pointydog · 22/01/2007 17:44

I think, preggers, we'll be hard pushed to come across any more whippet/jack russel crosses

RocketScience · 22/01/2007 19:19

Preggerspoppet have you put up a picture of this dog yet???

I dreamt I saw him last night

Come on.........

Does your dog look like this one, pp? That's one of the google images that comes up on a search for Whippet-Jack Russell Cross. It looks great.

Fubsy · 22/01/2007 21:22

Id love a dog, but with two senile cats one of which loses control of her bladder at the slightest sniff of stress, that wont be happening for a while

VoodooBiltong · 22/01/2007 21:24

BOXER!!!!!!!!!! the only dog for me!

tortoiseSHELL · 22/01/2007 21:26

Just glancing down Active COnversations, somehow merged this one with the one below and read 'I think we might EAT a dog, is there any alternative to a labrador.'

preggerspoppet · 22/01/2007 21:58

scummy she's a lot like tht but her face is quite different, soooo much prettier.

rocket, I have a pic of her as a pup on my shared photos but dont know how to link it...

if I can work it out then I will put up a recent pic.

(chuffed that someone is interested now!)

preggerspoppet · 22/01/2007 22:39

hooray!

preggerspoppet · 22/01/2007 22:40

will link a recent one so you can all see what a stunner she is now aged two

Tortington · 22/01/2007 22:43

please go to the NCDL and don't buy one. pleasey weesy. tell 'em you need kid proof dog.

when i wa a kid we had a heinz variety. it was a blonde dog medium size with curly hair. He never shed. we had to cut his hair with scissors.

pleasy weesy consider this option rather than some pedigree ( which is after all a sooped up dog - rather like pimp my dog)
