I think we might get a dog. Is there ANY alternative to a labrador?

I'd prefer something smaller

but it has to be 100% kidproof, clever and active, preferably with no hair at all or low shedding...

Labradoodles are like gold dust though aren't they..

Why not get a rescue dog?

welsh springer spaniel.

Get a boxer - they are lovely!

tortoiseSHELL · 21/01/2007 20:57

Don't do it Enid! Puppies are a nightmare. My parents have 2 Cavaliers and as puppies they were like newborn babies, without nappies. Not good.

SmileysPeople · 21/01/2007 20:57

You women need to train your husbands BEFORE you get a dog.

If you can't train your man how's he going to train the dog??Be responsible people.

Not only did they poo everywhere, but they sat at the bottom of the stairs and cried.

boxers remind me of Oliver Reed. A sort of brooding masculine sexuality about them

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 21/01/2007 20:59

JustUsTo, rescue dogs have a 'profile' built up of them, sometimes with full history (people have to give up their dogs for legitimate reasons like ill health or old age etc), and others stay at the kennels long enough for staff to get to know them and see how they are with other dogs, kids, men (or women!) etc.. Most place vet the prospective owners as carefully as they check out the dogs!

We've got a border terrier. Lovely character, not too small to feel like a real dog but still portable, and has been angelic with dcs who have given her a lot of robust love...

Is a bit hairy though if not brushed regularly and clipped/stripped once or twice a year.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 21/01/2007 21:05

Well, at risk of sounding pedantic, (sorry), a dog should never be trusted 100% around children. Any dog.

We have 2 golden retrievers - great dogs as long as you don't have carpet!

English setters are a lovely breed - very placid, intelligent, and graceful.

NotAnOtter · 21/01/2007 21:25

labradoodle so cute

suedonim · 21/01/2007 21:50

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. A small dog but with a bigger dog personality. They can be a bit air-headed tho, esp the tricolours, ime.

Westies are awful, the ones I know all seem to be incontinent when excited and they're nippy too. And always have sh*tty bums. All ime, of course.

CountessDracula · 21/01/2007 23:38

Our iron-knickers dog does not wake us up to pee

She can go days without weeing it seems

Also she is not smelly as short haired

Moults like buggery though

CountessDracula · 21/01/2007 23:39

(could I just add that the idea of an intelligent dog is repellent. Dogs should be incredibly thick and lovely and soppy. Not all bright and scary)
