This petition is calling for a public inquiry into alleged pro-Israel influence in UK politics.

If this is something you feel strongly about, you may want to look at the petition.

Petition: Call a public inquiry into pro-Israel influence on politics & democracy

We are concerned about reported Israeli state-linked and pro-Israel lobbying activity in UK politics. We believe it is important to determine the scope and impact of any such influence campaigns.

No, you're right I'm sure there is absolutely no untoward motivation behind the relentless, persistent, disproportionate obsession with finding something sinister in whatever the world's only Jewish state does. Nothing at all. Nothing to see here.

So you don't think that foreign interest lobby groups claiming responsibility for the government acting unlawfully and curtailing free speech and protest is a big deal? Hand on heart you can say if it were an Iranian lobby group who was claiming responsibility for curtailing free speech in the UK you would be shrugging it off, wouldn't even want an investigation into whether it not what the lobby group themselves have claimed is true? I mean if you would fine but if not you might want to look at what might be motivating your double standards.

Seems to me like you shouldn't claim that the governments unlawful actions are as a 'direct result' of your lobbying if you don't want people thinking that your lobbying is influencing the unlawful governments decisions.

Imagine the nefarious intentions of a lobby group advocating for a peaceful 2 state solution..the monsters.

Can you clarify why you are posting about lfi, I'm not sure how it is revelant to my post so don't really know how to respond.

It's difficult isn't it? Lobbying, influence and seeking change by protest has always gone on and is a part of politics - yet while we cheer on Emily Pankhurst and suffragettes/suffragists with their marches, occasional arson, window-breaking etc we want to draw a line with others. Now we get lobbyists/influencers demanding an investigation into other lobbyists/influencers. I'm all for a standards committee into influence/lobbying. I'd certainly like to understand why Labour is committed to making Islam a special case when it comes to legislation.

EmpressOfTheThread · 19/02/2026 12:55

The OP seeks a public enquiry as to why lobbying on behalf of Israel is allowed.
Lobbying and promoting your particular interest, as long as it is within the law, is perfectly acceptable. I don't know why it's only Israel that shouldn't be allowed to do this

Where are Labour 'committed to making Islam a special case'? The OP appears to want to make Israel 'a special case'.

I thought it was to determine the scope and impact rather than 'why it is allowed'? At least that's what the petition the OP linked to says, where did you see differently?

Read the OP's title, in bold, at the top of this thread.

If there’s a sinister cable of pro Israel influence they’re doing a piss poor job.

Well that would rather depend on what their goal is, wouldn’t it?

How about a public inquiry into the influence of big pharma, big tech and multibillion pound companies on politics and democracy? Why concentrate on Israel? For a small country they really get a lot of heat! Funny that, almost as if we have a massive antisemitism problem.

This.

Here's the full statement of the petition

We are concerned about reported Israeli state-linked and pro-Israel lobbying activity in UK politics. We believe it is important to determine the scope and impact of any such influence campaigns.

More details
We feel that the horrific devastation in Gaza, the ongoing suppression of Palestinians in the West Bank, and the UK’s political response underline the urgent need to scrutinise how pro-Israel organisations, networks, and lobbying efforts may shape government decisions, party policy, and public debate.

EmpressOfTheThread · 19/02/2026 18:31

Right, @Inauthentic . So any nation involved in any conflict or with any similar kind of accusations, should not be allowed to lobby like other groups do?
What would be the parameters for this? Would you include South Sudan, Russia, Qatar, North Korea, Syria, Iran.....?
It's tricky, isn't it?

EmpressOfTheThread · 19/02/2026 18:38

Maybe China could be included too, not least for the treatment of the Rohingya people.

Seriously???
There were councillors standing for election with their main focus being their pro Palestinian stance and we have a problem with pro Israel in government?!

As are the Greens, not their main one but still very important to ZP and not at all just so he is guaranteed extra votes apparently.

I'd like there to be more Israeli influence on the UK. Is there a petition for that?

Unsurprisingly no mention of the proscribed terrorist organisation Hamas.

Inauthentic · 20/02/2026 20:25

Antisemitism is real and it's rising. I genuinely understand why some people feel sensitive or even threatened right now. Reading some of the posts here I felt a real wave of empathy. Many people are feeling angry, unsafe, and on edge and Jewish communities in the UK and in other parts of the world are experiencing increased hostility, some of which is connected to the war in Gaza.

I reject antisemitism completely.

The petition's call for a public enquiry was not about Jewish people as a group. It was about transparency in political lobbying. I believe that all foreign lobbying groups, including those linked to Israel, should be transparent and open to scrutiny.

It's strange that it's only Israel you're identifying as a problem, the world's only Jewish state, though. Just saying.

Inauthentic · 20/02/2026 20:32

I would also support a public inquiry into any links between British government and Jeffrey Epstein. That doesn't mean that I am prejudiced against all British people.

So why does the petition single out Israel and not call for an inquiry into foreign lobbying in general?
