It is possible to use another location for claims, other countries do it.

The problem for Labour is 'smash the gangs' isn't going to lower crossings or deaths in the channel and now France are talking about the ineffectiveness of that.

France may well change the course of what happens earlier than Labour and the last vote, since for some reason people believed Starmer would smash the gangs

Isatis · 26/11/2024 10:41

But the Tories wouldn't go along with it when the suggestion of processing in France was put forward. I suspect they felt they wouldn't be able to demonise immigrants so easily if they followed that path.

The EU has shifted politically on this since then. France are now asking the UK to be more hardline

The Illegal Migration Act 2023 was always a dead duck due to the fact that Braverman was too dim/bigoted to listen when her department pointed out that it was unworkable without adequate agreements with third party countries. It's definitely good and dead now.

Now we have Labour's smash the gangs.

I'm not sure why people think increased crossings and deaths are a positive but even if Labour supporters still go for it France hold a fair amount of power in this.

They use a large amount of surveillance currently

KnittedCardi · 26/11/2024 11:30

Europe are finally moving towards a collective agreement on immigration, long overdue. Many, many, migrants spend years in the Eurozone going from one country to the other, being denied right to stay, and trying the next country, and the next. We are at the end of the line. The very West. Ironically Ireland has increasingly become the last stop, and they are not happy.

It should be European wide agreement, that denial in one country, means denial in all.

You always go on as through ‘smash the gangs’ is the only thing in the asylum policy. Look how many have been sent away for not being eligible, at whether the speed of assessment is climbing, at whether we are cooperating better with other countries, at whether more traditional access routes are planned. I think you got so used to Tory 3 word slogans that meant less than nothing that you can’t imagine a phrase like that is part of a wider policy.

If you are part of the EU, you can return asylum seekers to the country of entry.

It's your party's three word slogan. Complain to them if you feel strongly about how ineffectual it is.

I know you don't mind crossings going up but it will cause issues for Labour. And even if Labour supporters wave that away the French don't feel the same and they can have more input than most.

I would be surprised at how easily people accept higher deaths and crossings, but it seems some can be persuaded.

So why didn't we, when we were in the EU?

And why did Blair not take advantage of restrictions for the Eastern Europeans that other EU countries imposed?

@username8348

"I don't want to hear your opinion."

This is a really good example of the intolerant hard left.

There is only one correct opinion, their opinion and opposing views are shouted down or dismissed as far right etc.

Is this post meant to be ironic. Not listening to sense is characteristic of any hard line view, left, right, religious anything.

Because maybe despite a vocal minority, this country is actually quite compassionate to people in suffering.

There currently isn't a mechanism for large amounts of people to be moved to other EU countries. Some cite the Dublin Agreement but that was only a few hundred and needs approval

It’s not a three word slogan - or a slogan at all really.
They aren’t ’my party’, I’m not a member.
What about my other questions?

No idea. Ask governments at the time.

It’s not a three word slogan

Interesting take, it's three words and used by Labour as pre GE electioneering. Which people for some bizarre reason bought in to. I can see why people would want to forget it now it's clearly not doing anything.

What other questions, there weren't any in your previous post to me

It’s not a three word slogan in the way you are used to them from recent Tory governments. It’s not a meaningless thing to say. It’s part of a strategy.
You are correct, they weren’t questions. I apologise. I meant will you respond to the other points? Care to do that now?

To say that was a colossal mistake is an understatement. He vastly underestimated how many would come to the UK from those countries.

However, since Brexit, immigration has only increased.

Yours is typical of the hard right. You pretend to want a discussion and then duck out when you're asked to back up your opinions with facts.

No doubt I'll see you around, yet again, ranting about illegal immigrants when you've been informed many times that asylum seekers aren't illegal.

There are many opinions, you prove that, however I listen to informed opinions.

Why so intolerant?

Intolerant of what?

What do you mean "denying the petition"? It is just a petition, it has no actual power to make a GE happen.

Denying its existence.

Well given we are posting on a thread about it, we are not denying its existence!

I thought it mildly amusing that the pub landlord who started it now says “the government should have a bit more time”. Embarrassed, who knows? I imagine he has had a fair bit of piss taking about it

That's magnanimous of him. I wonder how long; couple more weeks?

I should think; then Starmer should see the sense of it by then. He shouldn’t rush things
