Inspired by AIBU thread, "To think night driving is getting more dangerous"

The Government should launch a review into the problem of some headlights causing oncoming traffic drivers to be unable to see clearly and safely. The review should be conducted with car manufacturers to find solutions.

The RAC raised this issue as far back as 2018 and its recent study showed that nine-in-10 drivers think some or most car headlights on the UK’s roads are too bright. Government data shows that there are around 300 collisions every year where dazzling headlights are a factor.

The RAC has often written about this: https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/news/motoring-news/rac-calls-for-government-action-on-headlight-glare/

Signed. Thank you!

Would be great to get up to 10,000 signatures- it seems the majority agree with this, it’s just not getting the coverage it needs!

Rummikub · 15/02/2024 13:29

It’s more than doubled since the start of this thread!

There was a van parked facing on coming traffic with headlights on. So bright I couldn’t see. I flashed my lights and the lights were turned off. It was awful how much I couldn’t see due to the bright lights.

DuesToTheDirt · 15/02/2024 16:11

Motorbikes are at fault here too. I know they need to be seen, but it doesn't help them to blind the rest of the traffic.

Rummikub · 15/02/2024 16:13

All lights should be should be looked at since led has become so bright and prominent.

flatmop · 15/02/2024 16:49

I drive a car with horribly bright LED lights. It was several weeks before I thought about lowering them from the factory setting. That seems to have stopped people mistaking them for high beams and flashing me but I'm still conscious about how bright they are. The flashback from road signs is bad enough for me, the full brunt of them is awful for other drivers

Bump

Went past a ‘hidden‘ police car today. And it’s lights were so bright! Especially as it was facing uphill. Difficult to see as went past!

That's ridiculous if the flamin' police are using lights that could cause an accident 😬

I walked past a few today, it was really unpleasant even as a pedestrian on the pavement - and it was a bright day and wasn't even 5pm!

Of course, as a pedestrian walking towards the cars you get the bad angle of the lights as well.

My thoughts exactly 😂

The incline is quite steep and hidden. Surely they’d be aware of the hazard!

chaosmaker · 17/02/2024 16:50

It seems that some cars are designed with their lights pointing up rather than down. Don't mean full beam but just shitty design.

Snowsp · 17/02/2024 17:05

I def notice this. Especially suv type cars where the high hight of the lights makes it right in my line of sight.

chaosmaker · 17/02/2024 17:17

It's also the little bug looking things, japanese maybe? Even with mirror dipped they are pointing straight in my line of sight - everything oncoming is usually too bright.
