Inspired by AIBU thread, "To think night driving is getting more dangerous"

The Government should launch a review into the problem of some headlights causing oncoming traffic drivers to be unable to see clearly and safely. The review should be conducted with car manufacturers to find solutions.

The RAC raised this issue as far back as 2018 and its recent study showed that nine-in-10 drivers think some or most car headlights on the UK’s roads are too bright. Government data shows that there are around 300 collisions every year where dazzling headlights are a factor.

The RAC has often written about this: https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/news/motoring-news/rac-calls-for-government-action-on-headlight-glare/

I wondered if you would be interested to see these updates from LightAware? It seems as though some progress is being made.

The second article, talking about our eyes adapting is also true when driving from non lit sections of road into brightly, led lit areas usually on motorways. Also driving through narrow lanes.

I usually now have my sunscreen down at night and rear view mirror almost constantly tilted day and night.

Being discussed on bbc breakfast this morning now!
A taxi driver having to stop work early due to it. A man with a new car constantly being flashed as other drivers think he has fog lights on. A lady quitting her job to amend her driving at night. One man getting his eyes tested (and he looks fairly young) nothing wrong with his eyes.
Their survey said 97% of people say they’re too bright .

Thanks, @fashionqueen1183. Glad it's back in the news!

There's also a phone in on LBC now about this.

fashionqueen1183 · 18/02/2025 09:57

Yup listening to lbc now!

chaosmaker · 22/02/2025 23:02

did most of the callers agree about stupid lights on cars being too bright?

chaosmaker · 15/11/2025 19:54

Government are apparently looking at it. Hope they do more than that!
