Inspired by AIBU thread, "To think night driving is getting more dangerous"

The Government should launch a review into the problem of some headlights causing oncoming traffic drivers to be unable to see clearly and safely. The review should be conducted with car manufacturers to find solutions.

The RAC raised this issue as far back as 2018 and its recent study showed that nine-in-10 drivers think some or most car headlights on the UK’s roads are too bright. Government data shows that there are around 300 collisions every year where dazzling headlights are a factor.

The RAC has often written about this: https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/news/motoring-news/rac-calls-for-government-action-on-headlight-glare/

Signed. Something needs to be done.

cockerspaniel · 04/02/2024 22:42

I've signed. I drive a lot on rural roads and really struggle with being blinded by oncoming headlights :(

tribpot · 04/02/2024 22:45

Signed. I nearly always avoid night driving and this is one of the reasons why.

icallitasplodge · 04/02/2024 22:46

Signed. It’s terrible at night.

Cheerfulcharlie · 04/02/2024 22:48

We also need better lit roads - especially motorways.

Lifeinlists · 04/02/2024 22:59

I agree.

Maybe someone could also start one to stop the ultra bright, flashing strobe lighting favoured by so many cyclists. Right in the eyes of oncoming motorists isn't the best plan to stay safe. A dipped beam is perfectly visible.

True! Glaring beams + dimly-lit surroundings = hardly any peripheral visibility.

Signed, it’s like everyone driving on full beam these days, bloody dangerous

OnceAgainAgain · 04/02/2024 23:41

Thanks for listing this. I will sign too.

It might be good also to support the charity lightaware. They campaign for safer lighting.

https://lightaware.org/

I can't go out after dark at all because I get migraines from headlights and street lights.

WomanHereWomanHere · 04/02/2024 23:42

Add in astigmatism and it’s a disaster!

WomanHereWomanHere · 04/02/2024 23:43

It’s almost as though lights are by default so bright that dimming them for oncoming drivers is irrelevant.

Whatevernext1 · 04/02/2024 23:48

Signed.
I was only talking to my friends about this a few days ago, something really needs to be done,it's so dangerous! Don't even get me started on those cars that have a strip of light across the front, absolutely blinding when coming towards you as well as when behind in the rear view mirror.

ErrolTheDragon · 04/02/2024 23:49

Yes, they've got too bright. Yellow filters might help.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 04/02/2024 23:52

Thank you.

They are even worse than car lights for me.

DodgyCanOpener · 04/02/2024 23:53

Agree. But only became a problem for me when they started going LED.

Hyldgegrub · 04/02/2024 23:55

Signed, it’s just getting worse and worse. Something needs to be done.

booktokbear · 05/02/2024 00:09

Signed. Thanks op.

Rummikub · 05/02/2024 00:42

Ah thats a really good point Instead of drivers having to wear those yellow tinted glasses perhaps car headlights could have this yellow filter instead.

Justcashnosweets · 05/02/2024 01:58

Signed. I drive on winding rural roads 90%of the time, and I am continually blinded by these headlights. Thanks for link OP.

mynxy · 05/02/2024 05:54

Signed, thank you.
It's not just oncoming lights that are a problem, I'm often dazzled in my wing mirrors and rear-view mirror even though they're angled down.

RumpleDumple · 05/02/2024 05:57

Thanks for posting this - I've signed.

PennySittingPretty · 05/02/2024 12:49

Bumping. I can’t believe their aren’t more signatures tbh given how many people I hear complaining about them.

Garlickit · 05/02/2024 17:46

Thanks, Penny. Bumping again.
