Review the brightness of car headlights for safety

Inspired by AIBU thread, "To think night driving is getting more dangerous"

The Government should launch a review into the problem of some headlights causing oncoming traffic drivers to be unable to see clearly and safely. The review should be conducted with car manufacturers to find solutions.

The RAC raised this issue as far back as 2018 and its recent study showed that nine-in-10 drivers think some or most car headlights on the UK’s roads are too bright. Government data shows that there are around 300 collisions every year where dazzling headlights are a factor.

The RAC has often written about this: https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/news/motoring-news/rac-calls-for-government-action-on-headlight-glare/

Once it hits 10000 I really hope the government response isn’t to just say that these lights comply with current legislation. That’d be missing the point.

On a different car related matter I read today that cars with key less entry are easy to steal and some drivers are using steering locks to protect their cars. Manufacturers are saying it’s not their fault it’s organised crime’s fault. The response frustrated me. We should be able to buy cars that are designed to be safe and secure. Not just using tech for the sake of it. And being charged for the privilege!

chaosmaker · 28/02/2024 01:29

I wouldn't like most of the modern technology in my car and am always going to buy an older, key entry car. Can't stand everything being done for me and it makes us stupider monkeys than we need to be.

Alexis Conran visited thatcham, I think it was (company that investigates and tests methods of breaking into vehicles) and they showed him how they gain access to keyless cars. The trick to stop it happening is to

  1. Lock your car
  2. Keep your keys in a pouch that stops the possibility of it's signal being relayed to the car and it then unlocking the door for its 'owner'
Rummikub · 28/02/2024 09:41

New tech means the device talks directly to the car. So faraday pouch redundant.

I swear the newer cars have much brighter leds. Had one tail gating me on the motorway last night. So bright! He could’ve backed off at least but think he was trying to bully me.

ToffeeShocker · 02/03/2024 21:40

Buses are absolutely dreadful now too, they are so bright, it’s crazy.

Anyway a hopeful little bump.

That didn’t work, so I’ll try again

DarkDarkNight · 02/03/2024 21:53

Signed. The ultra-bright lights are awful. People seem blissfully unaware they are blinding oncoming traffic.

Bump.

It’s almost there.

Where’s it up to now?

HarraKiri · 08/03/2024 15:29

Just saw this - signed and bumping.

I utterly hate driving at night because of this issue.

Signed. Very bad for rural road users. I actually avoid night driving as a result. Usually SUV's with LEDs are the worst, must be the height difference.

Yes I find this too.

Speaking to a friend about this and he only drives in the day time. Unfortunately I don’t have this choice due to my long commute.

I had to put my hand over my mirror as the car behind was so bright last night. I hate them!

peoplearepeople · 11/03/2024 12:27

Really surprised this doesn't have more people signing. I've spoken to so many people that this is a real problem for.

Rummikub · 11/03/2024 21:09

I know.
I had a big bright light car right behind me on the motorway. Dickhead. I couldn’t see
quite frightening.

Onand · 11/03/2024 21:12

Country roads are horrendous at night because of this. The brightness is quite shocking when you actually think about it. Anything or anyone in the road between oncoming vehicles is more or less invisible for a good couple of seconds.

fancyfrogs · 11/03/2024 21:13

Signed and pleased it's not just me as silly as that sounds. I suffer with migraines and bright lights can be a trigger, I've found myself panicked when driving in the dark and being blinded by another car in case it sets one off :(

DuesToTheDirt · 11/03/2024 21:17

It's not just country roads, I find it awful in the city - and when it's busy I feel a pedestrian could step in front of me at the wrong moment and I wouldn't even see them because I've just been blinded.

Driving down the motorway yesterday was actually fairly relaxing, as the barrier stopped oncoming dazzle. But when I wanted to overtake I did check that the next vehicle that was coming up in the lane to my right didn't have dazzling lights - if it did I waited till it had gone past to pull out.

Aviee · 11/03/2024 21:38

Bump. Come on we can get it there

ToffeeShocker · 11/03/2024 22:59
