Inspired by AIBU thread, "To think night driving is getting more dangerous"

The Government should launch a review into the problem of some headlights causing oncoming traffic drivers to be unable to see clearly and safely. The review should be conducted with car manufacturers to find solutions.

The RAC raised this issue as far back as 2018 and its recent study showed that nine-in-10 drivers think some or most car headlights on the UK’s roads are too bright. Government data shows that there are around 300 collisions every year where dazzling headlights are a factor.

The RAC has often written about this: https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/news/motoring-news/rac-calls-for-government-action-on-headlight-glare/

This bit

The transitional provisions permit sufficient time for vehicle manufacturers to redesign their products and adapt the manufacturing process, with the tighter tolerances expected to come into effect in September 2027.

@Rummikub

So as long as it's ok for business, then nothing else matters at all.

Rummikub · 30/03/2024 22:19

It’s such a big jump to 100000 from 10k!
2027 fir a review?!

Massive vehicles in my way also stop me being able to see around them properly and see why exactly they are in the overtaking lane, overtaking nothing at all. Or idiots in front of me that can't drive well and brake every other minute as they can't seem to control their speed at all.

Interesting that the highway code says you should put your handbrake on when stopped in traffic so as not to blind those behind your brake lights. Often you don't need to keep any brake on as you're on a flat road.

Unsurprised that the downing street mob don't care, they probably have drivers that get blinded for them. 2027 is another 3 years to kick cans down (dazzling) roads.

I always remember my driving instructor telling me about the brake light thing.
its just people being lazy and not taking their foot off the brake at lights. It’s SO annoying.

So frustrating.

Ive been reading up and it’s apparently the colour temperature that’s the issue. The bluer end of spectrum more daylight like. But therefore harsh on our eyes.

Older lights did seem to be more yellow.
But not as bright!

I've signed - I'm from one of the dark red spots on the map so clearly it's an issue where I am!

fashionqueen1183 · 02/04/2024 18:57

It’s on itv news at the moment and petition being mentioned!

Thanks! Just watched it. Not a bad little segment - petition's over 11,000 now.

Oo brilliant! Hopefully more will sign.

Ineffable23 · 03/04/2024 05:13

Bumping this for the very early morning crowd!

Lifeinlists · 03/04/2024 08:55

It's about to be discussed on Times Radio.
They just gave the heads up.

Lifeinlists · 03/04/2024 08:56

On now

Piggywaspushed · 03/04/2024 09:23

Article in The Times. too.

fashionqueen1183 · 03/04/2024 11:58

Glad it’s getting more traction. I avoid driving at night in recent years as it gives me migraines. It was fine when I was younger!

Rummikub · 03/04/2024 13:53

It’s not an age thing for everyone. More likely when you were younger there weren’t so many led lights about.

Rummikub · 03/04/2024 13:53

Did anyone listen to the radio item? Anything interesting said?

Comefromaway · 03/04/2024 13:54

Agree. Dd is 22 with perfect vision and complains about it.

Not sure if this was in response to me but this is what I meant.
When I was younger I could drive at night no issues as the lights weren’t as blinding as they are now. I’d drive me and my friends home from nights out all the time.
Now I hate going in cars after dark.

Rummikub · 03/04/2024 14:09

sorry I forgot to quote you. I never know the etiquette of a reply is directly below the post.

Yes lights are stupid bright these days!

Rummikub · 03/04/2024 14:15

I have a long commute on the motorway so unfortunately I have tu put up with it.

I try the technique a poster suggested to look down and to the left. That does help a bit.

Nothing that hasn't already been said on here but there seemed to be general agreement that the lights are ultra bright. Point made about automatic dipping headlights taking too long to switch modes.
Am I in the minority now, doing my own headlight switching (non led)? I don't even have a beep beep beep thing to help me park it either!!

Rummikub · 03/04/2024 14:37

Glad there’s more publicity. Who knew a petition would have an impact!

fashionqueen1183 · 03/04/2024 15:41

Pity the daily mail article doesn’t have the petition linked as there are hundreds of comments agreeing

Hyldgegrub · 03/04/2024 23:20

Great to see more traction around this
