To ask you to sign this petition to stop SUVs being driven on a standard car licence?

I saw this petition, and it seems like a good idea to me.

What happened at the school in Wimbledon today is too horrible to ever let it happen again. The sheer size and weight of SUVs makes them deadly to anyone they hit. And they’re totally unnecessary for 90% of their users.

My petition:
Ban SUVs from the list of vehicles that can be driven on a standard car licence

SUVs are unnecessarily dangerous to pedestrians and cyclists. Their size, weight and bonnet design result in death or serious injury that would not be caused by a similar collision in a car. The law around their categorisation needs to be revised to restrict SUV use.

Following the appalling tragedy at a school in Wimbledon, the danger SUVs pose to children has again been highlighted. Large heavy vehicles with high square bonnets are too dangerous to be a standard domestic vehicle type. Please legislate to prevent their use as a conventional domestic car. This could be by revising licence categories so SUV is a separate class, or by changing the law on vehicle design to outlaw “cars” with high or square bonnets or over a certain weight.

Wont happen, too may people buying them because they like to be high up and they think that big cars are safer for their little darlings to be ferried around in

Poppysmom22 · 06/07/2023 20:59

You do know a long wheel base transit can be driven on a standard licence along with several other large vans up to 3.5tons. all much bigger than your average suv

speluncean · 06/07/2023 20:59

The problem isn't with the vehicle per se.

SweetPetrichor · 06/07/2023 21:00

Nope, not a chance. It’s just a car…it doesn’t take any additional skills.

speluncean · 06/07/2023 21:01

I can even drive a minibus on my licence.

16 year olds can drive tractors that are significantly bigger than SUV's.

JeandeServiette · 06/07/2023 21:01

There's a special board for petitions. If you want the thread to stay up you usually have to ask for it to be moved there.

DancingLedgend · 06/07/2023 21:01

Signed.

May not in itself change anything, but the Overton window needs to shift on these oversized, over-fuel guzzling, overly dangerous vehichles.

The problem isn't with the vehicle per se.

TBF the risk to pedestrians is completely with the vehicle (nose design and weight) and not with the licensing.

Mommasgotabrandnewbag · 06/07/2023 21:03

What a nonsense petition off the back of a single accident in the news 🙄

speluncean · 06/07/2023 21:03

The risk is the drivers who can't drive them properly.

Are you planning to stop 16 year olds driving tractors too?

GoodChat · 06/07/2023 21:04

Lol have you experienced van drivers?

SeatonCarew · 06/07/2023 21:05

Do grow up. Most of the country don't live in Surbiton.

Songbird54321 · 06/07/2023 21:10

What are we classing as an SUV?
I used to drive a hyundai tucson, a mid sized suv which I didn't find particularly big or troublesome to manoeuvre. Then again I tend not to drive like a twat.
Now I don't need such a big boot for prams etc, I have a toyota yaris cross, defined as a compact suv. It's quite small in my opinion.
I have a family member driving round in a bmw x5 (because they're a ponce) and another in a nissan qashqai (has mobility issues and can't get into a lower car). I imagine the x5 is more what the petition is aimed at but where do you draw the line?

Plus EV are as heavy or heavier. I'm sorry OP but something else happened at that school the car is to far off the road for it to be an accident without a medical episode or having been deliberate.

What needs to end is the super mini craze just look at the NCAP rating of the panda! BMW X5 pedestrian safety rating 75% vs fiat panda 45% or of the same manufacturer as the X5 Mini Cooper at 66%. The Land Rover defender involved is at 71% btw.

MintJulia · 06/07/2023 21:11

Don't be daft. then everyone would just take the new test and be allowed to drive SUVs because they are no harder to drive than an ordinary car.

I've driven a transit, a Range Rover, a Land Cruiser Amazon, a freelander with no problems. My ordinary car licence allows me to drive larger vans as well.

The vehicle wasn't the problem, the driver suffered a medical emergency. Accidents happen. Slowing traffic to 20mph near primary schools would be more sensible.

LoveBluey · 06/07/2023 21:14

Nope ridiculous idea. People crash all sorts of vehicles. HGV drivers have a special licence but still cause accidents.

Banning larger cars would be the only way and I don't agree with that either.

bellac11 · 06/07/2023 21:15

EVs are incredibly heavy, no petition to ban them I think?

A standard licence entitles you to drive a number of vehicles, many are bigger, heavier and 'harder' to drive that a domestic SUV, no petition to change that I think?

Knee jerk laws are bad laws

Overtiredagain · 06/07/2023 21:19

Great idea.

PinkFootstool · 06/07/2023 21:20

All this handwringing has to stop. We have no idea if the driver was drugged, drunk, having a medical episode or did this deliberately.

No one seems to give a fuck when it's an adult in a small town hit by a lorry, bus, motorbike or a Hyundai i10.... Where are the petition for those?

No, an SUV doesn't require and shouldn't require specialist training.

A Landrover Defender doesn't actually weigh much more than an MPV - look at some models of the Renault Scenic II or the Ford Kuga.

Only if you passed pre-2014 (I think, might be earlier) but I passed in 2014 and can't drive anything bigger than a small van on my licence

BlueLiquid · 06/07/2023 22:09

A Nissan Micra driven across a school garden and through a group of young children would have had the same outcome.

museumum · 06/07/2023 22:14

no. Sorry. I’m often shocked by bad driving of suvs but I have a small campervan on a regular license which has the same footprint as a Range Rover and I’m no danger.
i think I am careful as I’m aware I’m driving a van while Range Rover drivers might be more blasé but either way an additional test/license won’t solve the problem.

Dinopawus · 06/07/2023 22:23

What about a petition to reduce the blood alcohol limit from 80mg to 50mg in line with most of Europe?

Pleasebeafleabite · 06/07/2023 22:30

I’m going to start a petition to keep OPs whose knees jerk this much to bicycles only

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 06/07/2023 22:34

My Landrover has a shorter wheel base than my old estate car. It’s much more suited to my forty mile a day cross country school run though, we live pretty rurally. And because it’s newer it has a very eco friendly engine and brilliant mpg.
