Please sign this petition to ask the government to implement home learning from 9 December so those of us who want to can self-isolate before seeing elderly relatives at Christmas can do so

Not everyone has elderly relatives who want to be treated like idiots.
Most of us have to work. Are we to leave the children home alone all day?
Maybe just spend Christmas at home, instead of trying to fuck things up for others?

What about key workers - what are they meant to do? Not everyone even has Christmas off. If individuals want to spend time with family at Christmas and want to self isolate beforehand then that's their choice, crack on. I'll keep working and juggle childcare and not see family at Christmas.

The petition should be to the remove fines for those who want to take dc out 2 weeks before and after Xmas.

Did you write this with anyone but yourself in mind? If you want to take your children out of school, take them out. Don’t however try to impose this on people who are working and have no alternative childcare options. What a self-serving post.

If parents' annual leave runs January to December and they have already booked it all then what should they do? An extra week I would maybe understand as Christmas is on a Friday (DS finishes on the previous Friday). Children needn't see grandparents for Christmas Day, they could wait until the weekend.

How about you stay at home for Christmas. Why should my children be punished and lose even more of their schooling because some adults can't do the right thing.
One of my children would possibly learn at home, but the one with special needs well not a hope.

Nope. I don't have elderly relatives, my kids need to go to school (my Y11 daughter has important exams leading up to Christmas), and there hasn't been any cases of covid that require more than one class to isolate (and only one of these instances and the school goes from nursery to sixth form).
Take your kids out if you want, but don't make the vast majority miss out on needed catch up education.

No thanks. For those of us who have to put together the home learning/reply to constant emails/teach online whilst supporting our own DC at home...it is extremely difficult. I would rather not.
We will be seeing family after 14 days quarantine when school ends.

I can see both sides. I don't want my CV 80-year-old mum on her own at Christmas but as my daughter is in year 11 and I work in a primary school that's what will have to happen unless we're going to risk giving her the virus. I'd be happy to break up on the 11th though, not sure why it needs to be any earlier.

Maybe suspend penalties from the 9th if people want to pull children out early, but please don't sign a petition to close schools early, some children need to be there. If relatives are extremely vulnerable then you could exchange presents on the doorstep, in the garden, or celebrate together over the internet if they live too far for a socially distanced visit.

No thanks, we've made the decision with our family that we're not meeting up indoors this Xmas.
Me and DH need to work right up to the Xmas holidays to enable us enough leave to cover the Xmas holidays and DD is enjoying being able to play at school with all her friends every week day.
It would be very selfish of those of you who think one days worth of turkey dinner should cost our kids a weeks worth of socialisation and learning with their friends and us a weeks worth of pay to cover the bills.

What is wrong with letting children go to school as normal and then parents and families making responsible decisions at Christmas? We won't be seeing vulnerable relatives or friends at Christmas so as not to expose them to risk, most people I know are adopting a similar approach.

I've got no objection to anyone taking their children out if they are nervous about it. But my family is me and my daughter. So we're seeing no one over Christmas anyway. Why should she miss more school because of someone else's situation with elderly relatives. Either take your own children out or don't visit family that's vulnerable.

Err no.... you want to take your kids out then do that but mine need to be in school, and the two adults in the household need to work right the way through Christmas. Having another two weeks to cover childcare would be a nightmare. Plus It’s virtually impossible to effectively homeschool three kids while still working full time. We know, we tried from March. Why can’t people just have a quieter Christmas this year for one year?
