@MrsTerryPratchett. I find it odd that you assume anyone with a child wouldn't want schools to close, that being a parent automatically means you want them open. From discussions among mom's outside school I think for our primary school class it's about 50/50 parents for and against. Its not really that clear cut.

Mangofandangoo · 01/11/2020 19:19

Ha ha ha ha ha no

Fatted · 01/11/2020 19:20

Is everyone who signed it taking their kids out of school then? That should help lower the numbers without the government taking any action. Problem solved.

If only those parents could homeschool as they wish. I know why they haven’t changed this as the children lose out but those that want to access school could and those that want to stay home ditto.

@SoupDragon

I wonder if the pro-closure crowd are refraining from posting because of all the nasty personal attacks

There are no "nasty personal attacks". Most likely they aren't posting because they aren't on MN.

There is also nothing "vile".

Children were screwed over in the last lockdown (and I say that as someone whose DD loved online teaching and had a full timetable of lessons - she would love them to close again!). For every child like my DD there are hundreds more whose mental health suffered, whose physical health suffered and whose education suffered. How do you propose to mitigate all that?

Yes there is!! "Yummy mummies", "champagne socialists" and another comment has been deleted by HQ. This thread echoes the type of arguing I've seen elsewhere on Mumsnet as well, people really have their claws out over this one.

PMSL. Yeah, so vile and nasty 😂

ThatDamnScientist · 01/11/2020 19:26

No. My youngest is autistic and in mainstream but no EHCP. My mental health suffered massively last time (I am carer for my eldest disable child) to the point I could barely cope. I vehemently oppose closing of schools now (I am clinically vulnerable so can't be beaten with the stick that I don't care about the vulnerable).

Schools should be safe for all in anyway possible and those that want to take their children out without penalty should be allowed (ie no fines) but they should NOT close.

YouAreMySunshine123 · 01/11/2020 19:27

No!

Let's have a petition to keep them open instead but fund safety measures such as more deep cleaning in schools, PPE for teachers, smaller classes, better access to supply teachers & shielding furlough for those staff who need it!!

Don't take kids right to an education away from them because of a virus that mainly affects the over 60's.

Dixiee · 01/11/2020 19:30

My business never contributed to the spread of Covid or several other businesses neither as a matter of fact and I don't understand why we need to shut and go bust when schools are the main reason for the spread can stay open so parents can wfh peacefully. Fuck off is this fair.

Are you expecting a congratulations for being so grown up? Confused You can take the hard hits with the big boys so therefore you win the thread?

This is why Mumsnet is such an awful place to discuss things at the moment, intelligent debate just gets drowned in shouting matches. I remember everyone getting thoroughly fed up with this last lockdown too.

PheasantPlucker1 · 01/11/2020 19:37

Youaremysunshine thats exactly what the unions have been asking for, since about May.

It didnt happen.

ErrolTheDragon · 01/11/2020 19:37

Education isn't optional. It's not on a par with the leisure industry or non-essential retail ffs.
I certainly shan't sign this.

movingonup201 · 01/11/2020 19:41

Attictroll · 01/11/2020 19:42

No fucking way. Teachers are key workers imho and schools vital. Basically govt needs to sort the situation out not close them. I imagine most signatures are from people without kids.

Readysteadife · 01/11/2020 19:42

No ! The schools need to stay open . My 12 year old really , really struggled without school mentally .

Littleroundsponge · 01/11/2020 19:43

No Confused get a life!

People without kids still get a say though surely? Some theories say schools are impacting community spread so therefore everyone young and old, childless or parents are all affected. So I don't really see the issue with non parents joining the debate on either side.
Sittinbythesea · 01/11/2020 20:07

No. Many of the kids I teach and my own children’s mental health suffered badly last time. And as always the most vulnerable suffered the most.

oneglassandpuzzled · 02/11/2020 09:43

Can't we have one thread or section for people who want to cancel schools?

ErrolTheDragon · 02/11/2020 10:19

This thread has to be in this section anyway as it's explicitly linking to a petition.
