What a pointless waste of time.
No.

Mimi66 · 01/11/2020 18:25

Anything but that.

Redshoeblueshoe · 01/11/2020 18:25

Children need to be in school.

SallyTimms · 01/11/2020 18:28

As someone working in a school, it's a no.

Schools need to be open. The impact on children's mental health is appalling, the children with GCSEs and a levels in next 2 years will likely be fucked over big style if this year's fiasco is anything to go by, the safeguarding concerns it flags up are monumental.

Lovely happy families who can work from home, have a stay at home patent or older children that can self manage good quality school work are not the norm. The people struggling are the ones school need to be open to support, in addition to ongoing education that needs to be provided which home learning dies not adequately replace.

Deyes999 · 01/11/2020 18:43

From my post I never mentioned my own situation or if I agreed or didn't agree with it. I merely said sign this if you want schools to close. I wanted to gauge the consensus. Some of the comments on here are nothing short of vile. All jumping on the bandwagon. You can say you disagree with things politely ya know. Embarrassing

justanotherneighinparadise · 01/11/2020 18:51

If the press is anything to go by schools may close anyway regardless of the fact so many of us hate the idea. I’m devastated at my children’s lost education. It’s a fucking scandal.

Why would you post it if you didn't support it? Do you not see how sharing the petition here will help it, and potentially cause more harm to children and young people?

Hobnobswantshernameback · 01/11/2020 19:03

Nah, there's only one thing about this thread that's embarrassing to be honest

Ylvamoon · 01/11/2020 19:03

Good luck OP.

But it's a big fat NO from me!

ohidoliketobe · 01/11/2020 19:03

You have the option to home school without every school in England closing, you do understand that don't you?

Todaythiscouldbe · 01/11/2020 19:05

Anybody who signs this presumably doesn't have a child in year 11, year 13, or one with SEN who needs routine. Do you have any idea how many vulnerable children were forgotten in the last lockdown?

AliceWhiteRabbit · 01/11/2020 19:06

Children need to be at school. So I won't be signing that. I don't know many parents would agree. Think it's mainly a select few teachers.

OP if you think your children are safer at home then keep yours at home.

Or do you think schools should closed because you are a teacher? If that's the case are you someone who should be shielding? If yes, then you need to discuss with your employer. If not, then you just need to get on with your job or resign.

Most teachers I know prefer being at school and want children at school because that's where they learn best and the teachers chose their profession as it is a vocation and they just want children to learn and fulfill their potential.

MrsMigginsMate · 01/11/2020 19:07

So i'm watching the signatures counter tick up while people post their disagreement here. I wonder if the pro-closure crowd are refraining from posting because of all the nasty personal attacks. Its like Brexit 2.0 this subject, people are being really vile.

Janus · 01/11/2020 19:09

I have 4 in school and uni, one is in year 13 and hanging on by her teeth. She needs face to face learning to have a hope at feeling ready for exams. I despair.

I know at least one child who was locked down with a horrible, emotionally abusive parent who threatened suicide. He's a primary school child.

School isn't just childcare and it's not just learning. Sometimes it's a reprieve.

SoupDragon · 01/11/2020 19:11

So you encouraged people to sign a petition that you, personally, do not agree with...? Really?

MrsMigginsMate · 01/11/2020 19:12

How about instead of closing schools, just cancel absence fines for a period of time so everyone can choose what's best for their individual circumstance? This seems a reasonable third option that most media outlets aren't considering. Could be combined with mandatory welfare checks, maybe via zoom with schools to ensure safeguarding is maintained as much as possible. Those who think their kids do better in school would be able to send them in to a somewhat safer environment due to reduced numbers.

Todaythiscouldbe · 01/11/2020 19:13

@MrsTerryPratchett it's heartbreaking. It can't be allowed to happen again.

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/11/2020 19:14

It's more likely that a website called Mumsnet is vastly more likely to have parents on it. People signing the petition could be childless, older, whatever. No consequences for them if schools close.
Sweetchillijam · 01/11/2020 19:14

No thanks. I guess you have young children OP and or have no job, too much time on your hands and want to home school either that or you are a teacher?
I have a DD taking GCSE’s in summer (her school did almost buggar all during lockdown and her MH really suffered. I also have a high achieving DS in the first year of his A levels doing subjects I have absolutely no aptitude or interest in.

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/11/2020 19:15
@MrsTerryPratchett it's heartbreaking. It can't be allowed to happen again.
It is heartbreaking. I don't know if people realise how many children had no learning at all, insufficient food, no watchful eye making sure they were OK. They will never catch up now, never mind if schools close again.

middleager · 01/11/2020 19:16

Not a chance. Two year 10s here.

SoupDragon · 01/11/2020 19:16

There are no "nasty personal attacks". Most likely they aren't posting because they aren't on MN.

There is also nothing "vile".

Children were screwed over in the last lockdown (and I say that as someone whose DD loved online teaching and had a full timetable of lessons - she would love them to close again!). For every child like my DD there are hundreds more whose mental health suffered, whose physical health suffered and whose education suffered. How do you propose to mitigate all that?
