To ask you to sign this petition about women's prisons

You may remember recently the case of Karen White, who is physically a man but self id'ed as a women. White was sent to prison after carrying out a vicious attack and was subsequently housed in the female estate. Within days White raped 2 women and thank god, is now housed in the male estate.

However, there are simply no guarantees that this situation would not happen occur. If self id became the law over here, women in prison,l who are often vulnerable & as a group are statistically to be more likely to have experienced sexual assault will be most at risk. In Ireland where self id is already law transwomen are housed in the male estate. Over here, where self id isn't even law, we have gone one huge step further than Ireland by allowing fully in tact males into the female estate.

In prison showers and getting dressed is open and shared. Personally I could not imagine personally having to shower naked in front of a male bodied stranger. It's bad enough in front of women. I think it says a lot about a society that carefully considers the privacy, dignity and safety of it's most vulnerable members. As I understand it, there are currently male bodied prisoners in every female estate.

If you feel, as I do that prison rules should reviewed, please take a look at and sign this
petition.

That woman's story was harrowing. This should not be happening, it's madness.

The Canadian transwoman who tied up the Vancouver rape relief centre for 12 years should be sending a warning.

It cost them hundreds of thousands of dollars. He wanted to be a counsellor. He felt his right to listen to women talk about their rape was valid.

It's difficult to believe.

But what's worse, is it took 12 years. How many people involved in this issue could not, or did not, turn around and say no, for fucks sake, NO.

How many meetings, minutes, memos, reports, emails, committees, were there? Full of people whose hands were tied because of a policy they couldn't get out of.

This petition is vaguely worded, calling for a "review"... be very careful when you sign please, the group who are calling for this review are very publicly known to not want only a "review", but to actively want any transgender prisoner with XY chromosomes to be housed in the male estate

Not wanting men housed with vulnerable women doesnt mean people want trans people housed with men either. Maybe rat, that's something you could campaign for, keeping trans women safe in their own estate or something. As male bodied people do not belong in the female estate. Ever.

Bump.

FermatsTheorem · 07/11/2018 20:40

And another bump.

Ereshkigal · 08/11/2018 09:23

Morning bump with your ☕️

WarmWishes · 08/11/2018 09:55

Maybe we should start an argument between ourselves?

WarmWishes · 08/11/2018 09:56

To keep the thread alive. Feel free to provoke me...!

In the meantime this is link to petition:

Nearly at 5k. C'mon get signing!!

thefatladyscreams · 08/11/2018 11:33

Signed.

Penny1976 · 08/11/2018 14:46

I'm surprised this hasn't got more signatures really. Clearly women in prisons are not the fashionable concern.

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 11/11/2018 14:39

Bump.

Maybe if we can keep this thread in active convos it'll pick up some more signatures and get over 5000 today.

It really doesn't help that petitions have to go on this board and tend to drop out of site - hence there now being about 8 on this subject, started in FWR or AIBU but moved here.

I had a bit of a search to see why MN has this policy, it's sort of explained in this thread:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/site_stuff/2639856-Petitions

... because it's annoying if boards are spammed with trivial petitions (fair enough) and so there's a blanket rule.

However, I wonder if MNHQ would consider a specific exception for parliamentary petitions, maybe with a restriction to post on a relevant board (not chat or AIBU perhaps) and that duplicates would be deleted or moved?

That might achieve the sort of balance that MN generally aims for better than the blanket rule. I'm going to report this post to ask, if anyone else has thoughts on this please say!

WarmWishes · 11/11/2018 19:47

Let's keep the conversation going.

I know Ireland has separate prison estates. What happens in Malta does anyone know?

In the meantime here's the link to the petition :

Signed. Astonished at the hatchet being taken to womens hard won rights by self id

Each and every signature helps. It runs till April, nearly halfway to the 10k needed for the government to have to respond to it already.

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 12/11/2018 06:23

Early morning bump.

WarmWishes · 12/11/2018 09:03

34 more signatures and we'll hit the half way point.

Article from the weekend. Some say it is ground breaking because the perps are cited as trans women rather than women. Anyway, these lovely wee lassies are being referred to crown court rather than mags. I presume this means there's a high chance of incarceration.

If detainment at HM's Pleasure occurs, which estate do you think they will go to? Which estate SHOULD violent transwomen go to?

It's a good context for sharing the petition on Twitter.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/11/2018 12:19

I got a reply to my question on petitions board policy from MNHQ.

^Thanks for the message.

As things stand, we feel the current policy does work better than what we've done previously. We've found that where petitions are allowed to creep onto the other boards, there are always posters who disagree about whether or not the 'cause' is worthy. And obviously anyone can get up a parliamentary petition if they wish, so it's not necessarily any real indicator of the strength of belief in a cause, so we are concerned that we would still have the same objections fielded. It also means that once someone sees one petition type post up on the wider boards, we'll be inundated. Keeping on top of them all can be quite tricky and it's easy for the boards to become overrun.

But we will pass your comments upwards and see if there's anything we can do. We'll be in touch if we come up with anything.^

I do agree it's tricky - I can't think of an ideal solution.

So, I guess we just have to keep on thread bumping to keep it in Active convos - for causes we believe in that should be possible.

KenDoddsDadsDogsDead18 · 12/11/2018 12:23

Thanks for sharing that. It was easier before to keep it in 'active' when the posters with outlandish views were here. Now they've noticed the signatures creeping up, they are staying off the thread.

We need a juicy debate to keep it live.
