Petition to ban balloon and sky / Chinese lantern releases

Please can I encourage you to sign this petition to ban balloon and sky / Chinese lantern releases? petition.parliament.uk/petitions/215782

Every year balloons and ribbons kill farm, wild and marine life and take years to rot. Sky lanterns are dangerous - they cause fire & damage & a risk to life.

There are many other ways to mark significant events or remember loved ones that cause no harm to wildlife and the environment. Please help bring an end to this needless destruction!

I agree wholeheartedly with what you are saying although unfortunately others on here will disagree and will continue to release their balloons inferring that how they cope with their grief trumps that of others.

Thanks all! @Odile I totally agree with your friend. It makes me so angry to see this stuff being 'released' into the environment with no thought to where it ends up.

katty I respect people's grief. But believe that there are many other non-destructive ways grief can be respectfully marked. I can see no valid argument for this behaviour.

Happily Signed.

I cannot understand why people do this - and I imagine most of them would be horrified at the thought of slinging a coke can or plastic bag into the sea or in a field. Well, in my eyes it's no different. Just because the balloon floats prettily away doesn't mean it's not going to fall back to earth and choke an animal. It still counts as littering, even if you don't see it fall.

All Welsh councils have banned sky lanterns
www.nfu-cymru.org.uk/news/latest-news/sky-lantern-ban-across-wales/

But I think it's important to ban balloons too. Obviously the odd one being let go by a child is inevitable but these mass releases mean someone's legacy to the world is to kill wildlife in a painful way rather. I can think of better ways to be remembered and mourned.

Signed.

Signed. I can't believe anyone in this day and age is either ignorant, stupid or obtuse enough to think this is ok.

I got a pack of sky lanterns once, I thought they would have a gentle flame and be like paper. After letting it go we were so worried we followed it as far as we could, out of fearnof it coming down and setting fire and realising it had metal in as well as the wax that burned.

I don’t condem children releasing a single balloon up to a lost relative etc but there’s yet another planned balloon release for Alfie Evans on the 5th, hundreds have already been released- by people who don’t even know him, the next one again is random people who didn’t know him sending hundreds of latex and foil balloons up...and then down

I know Daisy mentioning the Alfie Evans balloon release is a very sensitive subject, but I wish there was greater public awareness of the damage this causes and the other man,y, many, many ways a young life could be remembered.

Really annoys me when I see gender reveals that include letting balloons loose. There's no reason that can't just be tied down so they only float up a few feet out of the box.

Signed! If we could get everyone planting trees instead of releasing balloons, things would be so much better.

Sky lanterns must be a nightmare for people whose houses have thatched rooves!

I was shocked when I saw they released balloons for Alfie Evans, I can’t believe people aren’t aware of the environmental implications in this day and age. I will sign now.
