Petition to ban balloon and sky / Chinese lantern releases

Please can I encourage you to sign this petition to ban balloon and sky / Chinese lantern releases? petition.parliament.uk/petitions/215782

Every year balloons and ribbons kill farm, wild and marine life and take years to rot. Sky lanterns are dangerous - they cause fire & damage & a risk to life.

There are many other ways to mark significant events or remember loved ones that cause no harm to wildlife and the environment. Please help bring an end to this needless destruction!

Signed. Thanks for sharing- was not aware of this petition.

I found the remains of a lantern in one of the fields where I used to work once (horse rescue centre). It was huge, made of sharp wire, and blackened all over from the heat. There were already traumatised horses on that farm, it was so lucky it didn't cause an accident. It could have so easily caused them to bolt through fences or have set fire to their hay. And don't even talk to me about evil terrifying shiny flappy rustling balloons caught in hedges - fit to give any horse a fit of the vapours. We used to find them, too.

Will sign and share this!

Already signed this a few days ago.

Let's hope this thread doesn't get ugly.

Thanks all! Keep sharing! I almost always find a deflated shiny balloon in a hedge when I'm out walking (and pick it it to bring it home) but have also heard stories from farming friends of cows who have died eating them and fields that have caught fire from the lanterns. The more publicity we can get for this, the better!

Thanks for the heads up about the balloon releases in Liverpool. I will take a bag with me on my weekend walks.... They end up all over the hills above my village.
Signed

I picked up a couple of balloons from a hedgerow the other day. It doesn't matter how grieving anyone is, releasing balloons that will pollute the countryside and harm wildlife is a terrible thing to do.

Releasing balloons or lanterns will do nothing for the dead person, it's all "look at me, see how sad I am, see what I'm doing about it."

My family have strict instructions to plant snowdrop bulbs for me when the time comes.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/05/2018 18:57

Signed. Dangerous, and helium is a valuable finite resource needed for more important things not wasted in balloons.

73kittycat73 · 02/05/2018 19:56

Signed, that's for flagging this up OP.

DairyisClosed · 02/05/2018 19:57

This is completely unnecessary. This is already covered by littering. The law would work much better if people actually enforced the existing laws instead of creating up even more legislation for people to deal with.

73kittycat73 · 02/05/2018 20:00

*Thanks, not that's. Don't know where that came from. :p

Thank you OP.

Shamoo · 02/05/2018 21:38

Signed.

The selfishness of people who do this given the information available today is utterly depressing.

Signed. Thank you DailyFailAreTwats. It is completely necessary.

I'm appalled that the sad Alfie Evans situation is being exploited by people insisting on releasing balloons in his name. How the hell does that help the poor child or anybody else? Money from the sale of these vile things could have gone to a charity, any charity, any hospital - anything but this.

Sadly, too many people are into highly visible and ostentatious grief performing, even when they are not experiencing the loss.

Balloons and lanterns are highly damaging and not at all a socially or environmentally acceptable activity.
