The sentence for hit and run drivers MUST be increased. 61 days in prison for killing someone isn't justice!

The link to the petition is at the bottom of this article
eveshamobserver.co.uk/news/hit-and-run-family-in-sentence-review-call/

The victim of this crime was a friend of mine. He was killed aged 36 and left to die in the street by the person who hit him. That person ditched his vehicle and by the time he was caught (over 2 weeks later), it was too late to get any evidence of drink driving, speeding etc. They do know that he never even tried to brake before or after hitting my friend.
Beause of this, he was only charged with leaving the scene of an accident and therefore only served 61 days in prison. For taking a life.

The victims family are trying to get this loophole in the law changed as they feel there is almost an incentive to leave an accident as you're almost certain to get a lesser sentence than the maximum of 14 years for death by dangerous driving (which he would have been charged with had he stayed)

Please sign so this gets considered by parliament. This is the sort of crime that could happen to anyone and, sadly, is likely to happen again, devastating another family.

Thanks for reading.

I wonder if it's because the link is at the bottom of the article? Would amending the OP by adding a direct link to the petition help?

Steaksauce · 20/02/2018 17:42

petition.parliament.uk/petitions/208008 this is the link direct to the petition.

I dont think people opening the thread for the first time will see it on page 15 though - that's why i wondered if you could have the link added to your original post Smile

It is blowing my mind that it's not got far more signatures because it seems so obviously appalling so wondered if it was a practically problem.

Steaksauce · 20/02/2018 19:27

True, I always flip a thread after reading the op in case the topic has moved on so I suppose I thought others do the same.

I guess it's one of those things that people think happens to other people. But the number of people who've posted on here with similar personal experiences shows that the law is inadequate.

I wonder if it being tucked away on the petitions board means it's not being seen? Most traffic is on chat and AIBU isn't it?

Ah I see, i dont think everyone does this. Yes maybe it is hidden away - is a new thread with direct link a possibility?

Or maybe a new thread with a focus on asking people who use twitter or facebook to share the link?

FWIW i dont think it is something people think happens to other people/they dont care about - I dont think anyone could be unmoved when reading about your friend Flowers

Steaksauce · 20/02/2018 20:20

Thanks @Waddlelikeapenguin and thanks for all your efforts and to everyone else for the bumps and continued help with this one. I may start another thread in AIBU or somewhere. Maybe tomorrow

I agree. I'm puzzled and can't work out why this hasn't got more attention/signatures.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 21/02/2018 14:27

I can't see why not getting more traffic either-can you move over to AIBU for exposure?
its a travesty!

drinkswineoutofamug · 21/02/2018 18:47

I've shared it on my WhatsApp and twitter. I don't do Facebook.

Steaksauce · 21/02/2018 19:00

I've put it in AIBU now as well as this, with a direct link to petition in the op. Hopefully more people will see it.
