The sentence for hit and run drivers MUST be increased. 61 days in prison for killing someone isn't justice!

The link to the petition is at the bottom of this article
eveshamobserver.co.uk/news/hit-and-run-family-in-sentence-review-call/

The victim of this crime was a friend of mine. He was killed aged 36 and left to die in the street by the person who hit him. That person ditched his vehicle and by the time he was caught (over 2 weeks later), it was too late to get any evidence of drink driving, speeding etc. They do know that he never even tried to brake before or after hitting my friend.
Beause of this, he was only charged with leaving the scene of an accident and therefore only served 61 days in prison. For taking a life.

The victims family are trying to get this loophole in the law changed as they feel there is almost an incentive to leave an accident as you're almost certain to get a lesser sentence than the maximum of 14 years for death by dangerous driving (which he would have been charged with had he stayed)

Please sign so this gets considered by parliament. This is the sort of crime that could happen to anyone and, sadly, is likely to happen again, devastating another family.

Thanks for reading.

I know, he had audacity to plead 'not guilty' as well so a horrible drawn out process for the family as well.

Just saw this.

I saw a comment on twitter about how car deaths in this country are a lot like gun deaths in the US - seen as a tragic accident with no political will to do anything about it.

A class mate of mine was killed by a hit and run drunk driver when she was just 16. Drink driving seems to be more unacceptable these days (that was in the 80s) and yet speeding / careless driving doesn't seem to have the same stigma.

I worked in a prison for a while and got to know several men who were there for causing death by dangerous driving. Their reactions to what they had done were very diverse indeed... from the utterly remorseful who wished it was they who had died, to those who left prison still showing absolutely no remorse at all.
