It may not do any good but, hey, it can't hurt.

"I won't be signing it. This is a democracy and the majority have spoken."

How funny, to object to the petition on the grounds that the vote was 'democracy. The petition is part of the democratic process in the UK, a process that has been praised as the best in the world by Brexieters. Democracy isn't just like voting student rep or Big brother. To my knowledge people in the Brexit camp are e banging about how undemocratic the EU is. Well, the petition is part of people's democratic rights.

Imbroglio · 25/06/2016 11:18

I've signed.

This was too big a step to be a straight 50/50 decision.

HelsinkiLights · 25/06/2016 11:19

I totally agree with Cornish.
And even if the vote to remain had won by 51.9% (I voted to remain) I would expect a 2nd referendum as the margin of remain to leave would still be only around 4%.
If the leave campaign vote had come in at 60% or more then I would accept that & shut up & get on with it.

ohtheholidays · 25/06/2016 11:19

I think it's disguting to be honest. No matter what you voted we are supposed to be a democracy and the majority have ruled in favour of leaving the EU it might not be as big a majority as some you would feel we need but it wasn't like it was just 1 or 2 votes!

Start doing this now and it's accepted then what happens when were next voting in what party and what MP we want to lead this country?Do we all who voted for a different party and a different MP get to kick off about the Outcome then and get to demand that we can change the decision?Genuine Question?
Because although that's not as big it does make a bloody big difference to some of our lifes!I'm disabled and seriously ill and have 2DC that are disabled and the bloody Tories have done nothing for me and my family,it's been quite the opposite David Cameron has crucified lots of us that are disabled and I never voted him or his sodding party in,neither did any of my friends or family that are plagued by Chronic ill heath and disability!

JoffreyBaratheon · 25/06/2016 11:19

As the main stay arguments of the Leave campaign were, within horus, exposed as total lies I think the whole thing should be trashed and we should have a new one.

That mythical money to the NHS is the reason many people signed, not understanding really it was a recently elected safe seat MP and a person who is unelected, calling the shots in the Leave campaign - both of whom were in no position to be able to make promises like that. Within an hour or two of 'winning', they were backtracking. So hold them to account. Let's go again.

You know... Thinking of that, many people voted out to stop immigration, that was the central issue. Now that the Leave lifers are making it clear that they didn't mean what they implied, as there will be no changes in immigration numbers anyway. I assume people would vote different.

But I may be misguided, it seems obvious that there are many people who have not even watched the news/ seen or understand the already tangible effects of the vote.

MyBreadIsEggy · 25/06/2016 11:25

I won't be signing.
I voted to remain....But the leave voters won the majority.
It's a beautiful thing called democracy Hmm
I didn't vote Tory in the last general election either....should I have started a petition calling for another election or a recount because the result I wanted didn't happen?!
All I see from this petition is people throwing their toys out of the pram because they didn't win Hmm

louisagradgrind · 25/06/2016 11:27

Ha Ha!

What if Remain won by the same majority? Would Leave be able to have another one. If they then won by the same majority, would Remain have yet another? And so on, until the secret of perpetual motion had been discovered.

Who is running this country? North Korea.

We had a vote: everyone over 18 was entitled to vote and there was no punishment if they didn't want to exercise that right. That is the best system that there is and, around the world, people are prepared to give up their freedom and lives in pursuit of it.

Someone had to lose.Democracy is a difficult concept I know but try hard: maybe try reading a book about it and then, giving the head a little shake and thinking about the very far reaching implications of seeking to overturn an election for no reason other than one didn't like the result.

ohtheholidays · 25/06/2016 11:28

HATHardOn Fuck off!

Not everyone that voted leave isn't working, for fuck sake!
Alot of those that have voted leave have done so because they're jobs, jobs where they're putting they're fucking lives on the line every single day for everyone, people they'll never know and those people include people like you and one of those people that is doing that job is the man I love!

There are things that lots of people including you will never know is happening in this country and what could have happened because of rulings by someone that really would not have our best interests at heart, someone that has never stepped foot in the country and someone that wouldn't give a fuck about what would happen to those men doing that job let alone all the other lifes it would have affected!

I know for a fact that the one's that are doing those jobs and those in they're family that are allowed to know some of what they do all voted leave and for a very good reason!

HanYOLO · 25/06/2016 11:28

There is a school of thought that says there will have to be another referendum when it comes to accepting the negotiation terms. Likelihood is we can either get trade agreement as part of EEA plus freedom of movement; OR neither. So I think there will be a further, equally nasty and divisive referendum to look forward to.

But in all honesty I think we would all be better putting our energies into finding a way to create a progressive exit that keeps the best of what the EU has done for us and doesn't allow UKIP to call the shots.

HanYOLO · 25/06/2016 11:30

Though Nasty Nigel did say early doors that if the result was close and for Remain he wouldn't accept it.

Sunnymeg · 25/06/2016 11:31

The government could have put limitations on the referendum, by specifying that there must be a certain turnout and a certain winning percentage for the results to stand. They did not do so. This result must stand and be acted upon. If the result had been different by a few hundred, then I can understand, but 1.2 million difference is quite sufficient for any democratic process.

ohtheholidays · 25/06/2016 11:31

And just so you know that's not some propoganda that I've read online,it's not been in the papers or the news and it never will.
It's all actual facts, thing's I've seen and heard myself.

For some of this Leave is the least scariest outcome and honestly if people knew then I'm sure that the Leave vote would have won by much much more than they did.

alltouchedout · 25/06/2016 11:31

My reason for signing is not actually to get second referendum - I don't think we will and in any case, ignoring referendum results is a bad path to go down- but to make sure those negotiating the exit are massively aware of the immense pro eu feeling in the country.

Duckyneedsaclean · 25/06/2016 11:31

Everyone knew it would be close, the polls all showed whoever won would do so with a 50-odd% of the vote.

This wasn't brought up before because everyone thought remain would have the small lead.

HelsinkiLights · 25/06/2016 11:32

The EU referendum result is not legally binding so in theory Parliament could ignore the will of the people by deciding to stay in the EU. This is because Parliament is sovereign and the EU vote was an “advisory referendum”, as opposed to a “binary” referendum which has a fixed outcome.

louisagradgrind · 25/06/2016 11:33

'Nasty Nigel': how old are you? 10.

ohtheholidays · 25/06/2016 11:34

louisagradground well said!

HanYOLO · 25/06/2016 11:35

oh the holidays - you are clearly very impassioned & I am interested in your point of view (even though I'm pretty sure we disagree) - but I'm finding it a bit cryptic. What actual facts? What do we not know?

OlennasWimple · 25/06/2016 11:35

Does anyone really have the appetite for another referendum campaign? The last one was bad enough...

youarenotkiddingme · 25/06/2016 11:35

I wasn't persuaded enough by either side tbh.

Didn't feel leave could give enough facts and figures about benefits of leaving EU or that remain could provide enough answers as to why and how the money going to eu could be better spent.

I'm sure many felt the same. Perhaps that's why only 72% of people voted?

I'm actually for the idea that we take another democratic look.

If the leavers are the biggest force it won't change anything. If they aren't this country will have learnt a huge lesson in voting decisions. I'm not sure some of the population fully understand the impact of voting. That isn't patronising. I admit I don't.
My town has had a party stronghold for many a decade. I don't vote for them. They still end up in power.

I believe wholeheartedly in democracy. I also believe as the main financial and immigration reasons given for leave have turned out to be unsustainable - we should be given a democratic chance to reconsider.

Even if it's just to vote whether we take another referendum or not.

And interestingly I say this as someone who actually loathes DC and never thought I'd take the same side as him!

HanYOLO · 25/06/2016 11:36

No I'm old and being a bit flippant. I find him nasty but I apologise. Leave that bit out.

Farage said he wouldn't accept a narrow Remain vote.

Feelingsolow12345 · 25/06/2016 11:36

I'm sorry but the petition is stupid. What if it was the other way round the remain won and the leavers wants another vote I bet you'd say they're being stupid the vote is final. yes some people voted leave because they didn't think we would actually leave but others had a really good reason. I'm probably going to get a load of horrible words thrown at me now but I voted leave and I'm in the 18-24 category. I could have lost my job if we remained wasn't enough funding to keep us going. there are other reasons but I don't see why I should explain my reasons why.

honestly if remain had won and I saw a petition to have another one for so leave could win. I'd call it stupid then too. what the people have voted is what it's going to be. also I don't appreciate people calling the leavers stupid idiotic and other nasty names I have saw. we have our own views and opinions no one should knock them down.

OrangesandLemonsNow · 25/06/2016 11:38

If some of those that voted Leave did so because they felt their voice wasn't being heard imagine how a second referendum will go down.

Just prove their point further.
