There's an absolutely massive difference between page 3 and porn.

That link is completely irrelevant to this discussion.

Report
ashesgirl · 15/02/2013 15:42

Disagree, it's absolutely relevant

Hardly curiousgeorgie - that link perfectly illustrates why the sexualisation of women as a standard is an issue, whether it's porn or page 3. Those men posting on there had zero respect for her as a person, did not view her as separate from her 'job' or her views as having any worth.

That is what the normalisation of women being seen as sex objects does for society. Page 3 and porn are just degrees on the same spectrum

Okay, agree to disagree.

Page 3 isn't even in the same family as the kind of hard core porn Sasha Grey is famous for.

ashesgirl · 15/02/2013 15:51

Does she deserve to be spoken to like that because she worked in hardcore porn? Does that make her less of a person?

No, not at all. But that's got nothing to do with page 3.

All those saying that if the girls want to pose semi nude they should be allowed to do so: of course they can. They can pose for as many pornographic (soft or hardcore) photos as they like. In magazines stored away from kids. The issue is tits next to news (or what the sun calls news). Do you really not see the problem? Tits are not news. Porn should not be normalised in this way, in a newspaper where children can easily access it. It is nothing to do with being prudish FFS.

Report
curiousgeorgie · 15/02/2013 16:05

Then don't let your kids read The Sun. Just as you don't let them pick up other magazines or watch inappropriate tv channels.

Page 3 is not porn!

It just makes me laugh how much time people spend of rubbish like this when there are actual problems in the world.

Just don't buy it.

Done.

LittleWhiteWolf · 15/02/2013 16:10

Not porn? What is it then, in a word? If not porn, what else do you call a photo of a woman with her breasts out in an effort to excite viewers?

Report
curiousgeorgie · 15/02/2013 16:18

Porn is 'explicit portrayal of sexual subject matter'.

I suppose it spends on if you think page 3 is explicit.

And it isn't.

Depends!!

Report
LittleWhiteWolf · 15/02/2013 16:22

So what is it? I'm dying to know what you call it. Also out of curiosity where did that definition come from?

I have already explained why page three is a gender issue worth fighting against so I shan't repeat myself, but suffice to say not buying it is not enough to prevent it affecting me and and women in general. Just not buying it cannot prevent other readers leaving it around for me or my children to see. Just don't buy it is not a solution.

LittleAbruzzenBear · 15/02/2013 16:22

curiousgeorgie so if tits were taken off page three and replaced with a cock and balls what would you think about that? I would love the outcry if The Sun did that for one day. The outrage would be phenomenal, yet women are seen as fair game.

TheOriginalLadyFT · 15/02/2013 16:28

Are you male or female curiousgeorgie?

Can you really not see that page 3 is on the same spectrum as porn? It is all about portraying women as sexual objects - it's irrelevant whether that woman is posing in a photograph or acting in a film, whether it's 'only' her breasts being used as a wank aid or her whole body

Report
curiousgeorgie · 15/02/2013 16:28

I don't call it anything. It's page 3, it is what it is. I don't understand why it bothers you so much and why you can't just keep your children away from it.

I don't want my DD exposed to sexual content or violence.... So I just don't let her see it?? You can't remove everything you dislike from the world just in case your child accidentally witnesses it. (And when other readers leave it lying around for you or your children to see... Just dont open it?)

If it were replaced with male genetalia I think that would be a little different purely because it's an image we are not met with on a daily basis, as we are with breasts. People feeding babies, changing at the swimming pool etc.

curiousgeorgie · 15/02/2013 16:29

I'm female...

Report
TheOriginalLadyFT · 15/02/2013 16:30

And how would you feel about your DD posing with her breasts out at 18?

Report
curiousgeorgie · 15/02/2013 16:30

The original lady - would you have all nude scenes taken out of films? Out of plays?

Report
TheOriginalLadyFT · 15/02/2013 16:32

No, not all - I dislike sex or nudity scenes which have no relevance to the plot other than as a chance to ogle a woman as sort of human scenery. It's all part of the idea that women are just there as fuck toys while the male actors do the serious bits

I think you must being deliberately obtuse now or you have a very blinkered view of the world, curiousgeorge. Unfortunately the battery is about to go on this device so I can't debate any further.but I have answered your question already in my earlier posts and I invite you to read up on the campaign for any further answers you may need.

HTH.

I'm guessing a fairly pointless petition of 80,000 signatures is not going to make one iota of difference......."The Sun has the tenth-largest circulation of any newspaper in the world and the largest circulation of any daily newspaper in the United Kingdom. It had an average daily circulation of 2,409,811 copies in January 2013.Between January and June 2012 the paper had an average daily readership of approximately 7.3 million, with approximately 34% of those falling into the ABC1 demographic and 64% in the C2DE demographic. The average age of a Sun reader is 45 and approximately 45% of readers are women."

Confess the above quote is lifted from wiki but you get my gist. IMHO there are more pressing matters in the world, than getting my judgy pants in a twist, about a girl who of her own free will, chooses to get her tits out! :)

The original lady - I'm not an exhibitionist. I don't breast feed in public and I don't wear low cut tops, sunbathe topless or anything like that, but I don't have a problem with the women who choose to do page 3.

It being my DD wouldn't be something I'd encourage, but purely because right now she's 2, and it's not something I could imagine happening.

My friend who did it was slightly older, 23 I think when it came out. And she had her parents full support as it had been something she was trying to pursue. They honestly didn't seem to have a problem with it.

You are quite right, this is exactly why it persists - because you do see naked or near-naked women everyday.

That's why you think it's acceptable.

But please don't make me laugh about seeing breasts from people changing at the swimming pool or breastfeeding. That's a poor comment. Someone commented earlier that her friend was breastfeeding in a shopping centre and told to put them away by a security guard. Meanwhile images of naked women on the shelves in newsagents very close by.
